Honestly? Wow, you gals must live in a very clean cut place. I didn't even swear and I'm nasty? Sheesh. There has been much worse on this blog but shut up is considered nasty. I'll have to remember that.
I wish I could hear all your children speaking like you are.
"Shut up" is definitely considered rude in my house. To each. And yeah, I'm perfectly fine in my glass house where there's a higher standard for basic courtesy.
Umm ..... wasn't aware there were standards on a smack blog, lol.
You need to re-read the heading of this space dear.

Perhaps someone should take it on as their official "job" here to copy and paste that reminder and post it every 10 posts or so. Seems people constantly forget the whole aim of this blog is to SMACK. Who comes here to read nice things? You just might be lost if you do...
yeah, its a smack blog alright. but when someone posts a comment referring to a link that a few people can't get to....C & P or shutup somehow just ain't a nice way to get what you want. Now go right ahead and smack that all you want, I'm allowed my opinion. There is NO reason on this earth to ALWAYS be snarky.
I agree that there's no reason to be snarky, but the fact exists, that they can if they want and no one can force them to be "nice". period
Once again, I don't know why one would expect anyone here to be nice! You're in the wrong place if that's what you're hoping for.
Furthermore, no one is under any obligation to C&P things from the designer forum for you. If you're not a designer and you don't know what they are talking about, tough luck. Why would you think you're entitled to a C&P? That is purely ridiculous.
If someone is talking about something I don't understand (or can't read in a forum I can't see), I move on. There's lots of other things to read/comment on here. Time to put on your big girl panties and get over yourself.
just throw some shapes together and sign up with anyone of the crappy stores with even more crappy designers then have a ct call and get your top secret access to the designer forum it is free and you seriously get what you pay for
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
ROFLMAO!!!! no kiddin!!!
why would one think that anything anyone says on a smack blog even smacks of any truth behind what they say especially if they are a mean, snarky, nasty bitch. I mean really you think we can take any of this seriously. It's all a bunch of smoke and mirrors and if you come here and think you are reading the truth on anything think again.
And yeah, I'm perfectly fine in my glass house where there's a higher standard for basic courtesy.

Um, not it's not. When someone says something on a public board, then there you have every right to ask what they are talking about. It doesn't mean they have to provide, but you can always ask. It has nothing to do with entitlement.
Someone is deleting some of my posts. They were there yesterday and now they are not.

You do that.
I can't believe that so many of you got your panties in a wad over the phrase 'shut up'. Out of all the crap and nastiness, you get worked up about that? Un-fucking-believable. Slow days in digi huh?
I don't get posers. What on earth are they for? I don't understand/get tubed stuff either.
Really? You try again. I can't scrap with something like that. It'll look terrible on a layout. You think it's so great? You use it. My clients, on the other hand, would be very disappointed if I used it on one of their layouts.
^^^
I'm calling bullshit on that. There's no way your clients are running a stroke and looking at the ribbon at 100%. It looks fine, and would probably look great on a LO.
WTF is up with the expectations for QC in Digi? There's papers in the paper scrap industry that are blurred - intentionally, for a grunge effect - and real ribbons and string have shadows and bumpy edges ... but in digi, NOOO, we have to zoom into things at 100% and run strokes on them and demand that they are flawless or they are not good enough.
If you didn't get a reply about that 'QC' issue when you complained to SBG - it's probably because they didn't know what to say in response to a complaint about a perfectly good string.
I don't get posers. What on earth are they for? I don't understand/get tubed stuff either.
October 25, 2010 9:56 PM
-------
There's a whole other world out there doing digital stuff that has nothing to do with scrapping. I don't get the poser stuff with scrapping either. Tubes is a just stupid name in PSP that means clip art. I know in PSP it goes beyond clip art, but it's still basically clip art.
WTF is up with the expectations for QC in Digi? There's papers in the paper scrap industry that are blurred - intentionally, for a grunge effect -
------
I happen to think those blurred papers in the real scrap world look like crap. Having said that though, I'm not that fussy with my digi stuff. If it looks okay printed out, I don't give a damn what it looks like at 100% with a stroke. That is just for the anal retentive among us.
I wish I could hear all your children speaking like you are.

Yours are probably reading smack somewhere, just like their mommy. What an idiot.
Tubes is a just stupid name in PSP that means clip art. I know in PSP it goes beyond clip art, but it's still basically clip art.
___________________________
Tubes are to PSP what extractions are to PhotoShop.
Oh for pete's sake. Tubes in PSP are NOT clipart...and they are not "what extractions are to PS". It is basically a spray tool. What it has been 'turned into' by PS people thinking its just a PSP taggers tool is wrong. I use mine for drawing and spraying. IF you know how to properly use this tool, its something PS users cannot do without the help of outside filters.
QC has nothing to do with realistic looking bumps and shadows. If an edge is pixelated then it's not natural and it will print out that way. I don't particularly want something that looks like someone cut it with a pinking shears.
Blurry is another area all together and yes there is a difference between something blurred for effect and something that is so blurry it looks awful. Not everything needs to be sharp as a tack. I don't want a ribbon that shows areas that are flat and shiny. That isn't how the ribbon started out before it was flattened and scanned or done with a camera. People don't understand the light aspect when scanning especially.
Some things are easy to fix if you know your program and you know what you are doing. The problem is too many don't. I don't get the whole thing about missing pixels. If something is shear and not at 100% opacity it's going to show that all or most of the pixels are missing. Of course if you aren't printing it out on a colored background it's not going to show period.
I do agree that with digital not everything has to be perfect as long as it stays on your computer screen or is put on DVD to be viewed that way. The problem comes when people want to print something. Then it just might show up looking like crap and that's really what all the hoopla is over. Many doing QC don't really understand what they are doing in the first place but there are some really good QCers out there who do, you just have to know what stores they are in.
^^^^^^^^^
exactly. I have had kits that passed QC in one shop only to be returned for fixing in the other. One "stray" pixel atop an element is all it takes. I appreciate the QC - saves me headaches of returned goods and complaints! Its NOT just about strays or missing pixels or jaggies, tho. Its also about resolution. TOOOO many times items are stuck in kits at lower than 300 dpi(for optimal printing) - and I've seen as low as 72 dpi in CU packs. These can't automatically be shot up to 300 DPI without significantly reducing the size. Somehow a flower at 1200 pixels wide and 72 dpi, reduced to 300 pixels at 300 dpi doesn't interest me.
I agree - it wouldn't be such an issue if people weren't printing out their LO's. They are, tho - and so we have QC. The higher quality shops have higher quality QC, and if they don't....they sure had better start (i.e. SBG). Customers won't care where they got it from when they start complaining!
LMFBO Someone needs to learn her own program before considering tutorials. Her template edges are a mess.

^^^
I get that, but that isn't at all what the person who as complaining about Flergs' string was showing us. It wasn't at all pixelated, it was smooth and nicely extracted, except for a couple of natural bumps in the string.

I made the mistake of buying her store last year. It is useless. Her templates take way too long to fix to be worth it.
And, yes, I have e-mailed her. Many, many times. She does not respond. Ever.
Somehow a flower at 1200 pixels wide and 72 dpi, reduced to 300 pixels at 300 dpi doesn't interest me.
.............
1200 pixels is 1200 pixels. If you change the dpi, it doesn't change the number of pixels that there are. It would change from 16.66 inches to 4 inches though.
Saying shut up is none of the above and it's not nasty. Unless of course you live in fairy land.
---------------------------------
For what its worth, I find saying shut-up extremely rude. I had a shut-up jar when my kids were young and anyone saying shut-up had to put a dollar in it. And no I do not live in fairy land. I live in a world where I expect people to show respect to other people.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
And yet you're visiting a smack blog? Please explain to me how that's respectful.

-----------------------------------
Enlighten me please. I"m not trying to be nasty. I really want to know.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
And yet you're visiting a smack blog? Please explain to me how that's respectful.
--------------------------------
Just because I visit this blog doesn't mean I'm not respectful. Since I am *anonymous* you wouldn't know what my posts are like.
I would prefer that we could discuss issues without resorting to meanness and name calling. But realistically I know that can't happen on a *smack* blog.
I wish there was something between the goody-goodness at DST and smackiness of this blog. At least here I can try to read between the lines to know what this issues are and maybe who I should stay away from.
Digitals and theStudio have excellent, strict QC. Shabbypickle has NO QC in place, or didn't. SBG - no QC.
DigiScrapWarehouse has QC, but takes alot of time to do it all, only buy the stuff with seals on it. You would think that mostly CU places would have QC teams in place....but they don't.
Beware! Looks like Circle of Life is on the move again - wonder where she will end up now. Hopefully no place near me. ugh.
As far as the items that are at 72 ppi. It all depends on what the total resolution is. I have seen where some programs convert the file to 72 ppi when the png is saved. But it doesn't really matter because the total resolution is correct.
For example:
You create a 2 inch button at 300 ppi. The total resolution is 600.
When saved as a png, it is converted to an 8.34 inch button at 300 ppi. The total resolution is still 600.
So, just because something is at 72 ppi doesn't mean that it is not quality.
But, there well could be products sold out there that are 72 ppi and at a low resolution. I'm sure this can occur if someone is grabbing images off the web and trying to create products out of them.
Bottom line is there are many uneducated people holding themselves out as designers. It has become more of a challenge to determine who the quality designers are. Getting samples of product are helpful. But sometimes you have to fork out some $$$ to find out the quality sucks. Then you can choose to not buy from that designer any more.
^^^^^^
I don't know what program you're using, but when I save a 2 inch button at 300 dpi in PS as a png, it stays a 2 inch button at 300 dpi. (not that I would ever make a button that large)
She is referring to the scripts used in PS to bulk save each layer of a psd into separate png's. Some of them save at 72ppi although the pixel measurement of the item is still correct. Those ones can be changed to 300ppi without losing the correct pixel measurement. It's a PITA though. I have an action made by a scrapper that saves the png's at 300ppi.
^^^^^^^^^^^
It doesn't matter that the script saves the individual PNGs at 72 dpi (in the correct image size)... that script is ordinarily used by template makers to provide individual PNG layers to non-Photoshop users. It is assumed that those customers are dragging the PNG layers onto a NEW 12x12 canvas (at 300dpi) in whatever program they prefer to use and when they do so, everything is sized correctly.
Who did you get your action from, though? That would be a handy thing to own.
I live in a world where I expect people to show respect to other people.
--------
respectful to other people and you are where again? don't look now, but your hypocrisy slip is showing
Just because I visit this blog doesn't mean I'm not respectful. Since I am *anonymous* you wouldn't know what my posts are like.
----
No, it doesn't but you shouldn't have unrealistic expectations when you are on a smack blog. So, once again, I say, shut up! Obviously, that is such a bad word that saying fuck or bitch is nothing. Who knew?
I've had some items where the file info is telling me it's 72DPI but when I want to change the image size, it shows up as 300DPI.
Digitals is probably one of the oldest stores around that has been doing QC from almost the beginning but they don't put logos next to the kits. DigiScrapWarehouse has a pretty good QC team and Commercial Use.com has also started doing QC and I think they now have a loggo to show what's been QCed. Plain Digital Wrapper has a QC team and kits won't go into the store without a QC ok on it. I'm sure there are more out there just can't say off the top of my head.
Saying shut up reminds me of a child trying it's first shot at being assertive. It really holds no weight in my opinion but if it makes one feel better to say it, well whatever floats your boat. KWIM
and now can we say a silent prayer for Paul the psychic octopus who passed away today at a Sea World somewhere-didn't catch that much of the notice.
I had a customer complain to me once because she received an element from me that I had created (not in PS) at 5000x5000 pixels at 72ppi. I normally downsize to a reasonable and realistic size before packaging and missed this one. She claimed because it was 72ppi, it was no good for printing.
Oh, and just because it obviously needs to be said here: DPI is for printers. PPI refers to pixels on your screen.
Please help me out...why can't I find Digitals. What is their website.
Oh shut the fuck up.
Not directed at anyone in particular I just felt like it :).
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Love it. :)
I'm still waiting for people to say who does GOOD QC - since there was a statement made that some people do it well and others don't.
there have been stores mentioned already with good QC in place, geez. Just google Digitals. good god.
Please help me out...why can't I find Digitals. What is their website.

Oh, and just because it obviously needs to be said here: DPI is for printers. PPI refers to pixels on your screen.
Actually DPI is dots per inch and PPi is pixels per inch
the Standard is 300 ppi and not 72 ppi even if you have to make so big it will look fine on a 300 ppi background. There aren't many standards in digiland but 300 ppi is. If you are in a store that does QC you'll get dinged every time. Even DigitalScrapbookPlace now does kits in both 200 ppi and 300 ppi because they knew they weren't meeting the untold standard.
I googled Digitals and came up with digitalscrapbook pages. I was confused because I thought it said digitalscrapbook place, which is a place many of you don't like. It can be pretty confusing with stores having such similar names.
One more idiot having a buy my store sale. http://www.mglscraps.com/blog/?p=688 I bet everyone is lining up to spend $30 on her store right now. Yeah, right.

The few things I have from MGL scraps, and that's before she was a studio girl, and still at Elemental Scraps, are quite decent.

That wasn't my question, but thanks for the attitude. Someone said that some PEOPLE are good at QC and others aren't, and when asked who those PEOPLE are, we were given a list of STORES that have QC in place ... not the answer to the question, which is why I repeated it.
As to digitals being good ... maybe they have good QC ... but their store is full of .. well ... very digital looking product. Not to my taste at all.

Well sometimes you just can't make everyone happy. Some want designers to do their own designs which many of the Digitals designers do and so yeah they are digital looking and others want realistic which others also do but then extractions aren't to another's liking and on it goes. It's just one of those things where you just can't win for losing so most of us don't even try. We just do what we like and hope our customers continue to buy from us.

LOL well if she had purchased the extended warranty she wouldn't have a tale of woe. When you spend that kind of money on a MAC it pays to buy the extended warranty because just like every other piece of technology they do have problems now and again and it's a whole hell of a lot cheaper.

No shit, genius. What do you mean, actually? Actually what? Actually DPI is not printer resolution and PPI is not screen resolution? Not sure what your "actually" is all about.
I had a buy my store sale right before Christmas a few years ago. I didn't attach a "whoa is me" sob story. I didn't attach any story. I needed money for Christmas, period. Why can't people just stop fucking around and be honest?
Carry on. I'll probably be back next week some time to see what you all are bitching about then. Maybe some poor designer will make a kit with a purple and green butterfly in it. I'm sure to see all types of "OMFG, she stole it!" Or "WTF, she can't do THAT! That's against so-and-so's TOU! it clearly states she can't use that butterfly on Wednesdays in any kits that contain the letter 'G' in their title when it's raining!" with links to previews containing purple and green butterflies that may or may not resemble Poor Designer's.
What does everyone think of Polka Dot Plum? They had a designer call not too long ago. I wonder who will join their list.
Well when I read "Digitals" I thought they meant Designer Digitals.
That's what I thought, too.
Where on earth do all these shops come from? Talk about a bunch of junk....but one gal (Designs by Deb) posted in DA at DST and is in ALL these places. I've heard of a couple of them, but good lord...
Butterfly Blush Designs
TKO Scraps
Twilight Scraps
Scraps with Attitude
Heartbeatz Creationz
The Creativity Box
Wilma4Ever
Lollipops 'N Gumdrops
Sugar n Spice
Scraps from the Heart
Digital Scrap Designs
It does amaze me to see how some designers can sell in sooooo many places at once. Knowing how much time it takes to just package and upload a single product in one shop, then multiply by 10 (or even more, yeah, i have seen more than 10)... Unless maybe they have someone doing all that for them?
I dont want to generalise but i have seen SOME designers in MANY stores but their product is ... blah. Again, not generalising here. Just observing.
There's a misguided belief by newer designers that being in more stores is better. While it can be good for some to not be exclusive that many stores is a bit (a LOT!) excessive!
Not only that, but Deb co-owns a store, too!

I've always found her stuff to be of excellent quality. Not sure why the hate?
I know there is a gal, very nice...good work quality both PU and CU - her style is more fantasy type, but good...all depending on your taste....Valentina. At last count...she is in SIXTEEN shops. SIXTEEN. She's been designing for not quite a year...LOL. just..wow.
Sweet digi scraps' store (Liz) disappeared from Gotta pixel. Anyone knows what's going on?
That's too bad, she really deserves better. She must have said something that pissed off the control-freak. She's not the first to disappear instantly from GP, and won't be the last. That's just the nature of that place.
Disclaimer: I'm just guessing. Could very well be that it was an amicable split... but I doubt it, based on history.
I really would love to hear the story though. (What? like you don't want to know too? lol)
Actually, Liz has a family member with health problems and she had to leave to help the family. It was nothing bad.

Probably because selling your store is a very poor business decision. Sure you make some extra sales but you also kill future sales (at a much more profitable price) for a good long while after... People don't think long term when they do this stuff.
I have one of those Lifetime CU Licenses from Scrappin Cop. I just went to Deb's site, and reread her CU terms. Maybe I'm blind...but no where do I see anything about CU4CU. The reason I'm wondering about it is this:
http://www.creative-juices.biz/beaded-wires-p-741.html?zenid=43beb024c4a7591bb1ea07136d8f4d35
I was curious about an ad at DST, and had never heard of this shop. Went to check it out...and that's the page I landed on. Those are Scrappin Cop safety pins, for sure - I have them, too. and yes...I emailed Deb about it to if nothing else clarify IF there is CU4CU allowed, but I rather doubt that. Anyone know if she does? Might be a while before she sees or answers my email - she says on her blog she is very busy lately.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Also after buying two different "stores" I had so much of that persons stuff I got sort of sick of it and quit checking them out.
I agree that it is a business decision that can hurt future sales.
hmm, those are definitely Scrappin Cops wires and pins. I don't think she allows CU4Cu either. As for that "store" if you want to call it that...what a bunch of junk! All Granny-Art and Gunhilde. and these people call themselves designers? What are they designing? I hope Scrappin Cop gets back to you. Did you report it to the store?
Hoe come nobody ever comments on all the copyrighted stuff Scrappin Cop uses? All that dollar store stuff she extracts...

The terms in Scrappin Cop's pocket watch hear frames specifically says no CU products from CU freebies. But she also says to check the terms in each download because they can vary. You would have to check the terms that came with the safety pins.

Designer Digitals has never ever been referred to as Digitals. It's always referred to as DD.

Well what is common to one person may not be to someone else. I once had a client ask me if I used UPS. I went on and on about the differences between UPS and FedEx. She said "That's nice, I was asking about an uninterruptible power supply!"
So what the heck do you call Divine Digital.

well, we shall see. I emailed Deb and the shop where those pins and wires are being sold. They are also in Secret City Treasures site (doesn't Jewel own that? or is that Southern Lady, who is always spouting off about copyright violations???), but since they are closing on Halloween, I didnt bother emailing them. I am so sick of people who can't create a single thing on their own! Just buy or download stuff for free, and think that if they toss it together, put a label on it...they have a product to sell. and they made it all themselves, too! God damn. when will it end??? I know, I know. NEVER. I can hope, can't I?
I do not own a store. I do spout off about copyright, though :)
Weird - that was me - strange.
I do not own a store and am not at all ashamed to spout abotu copyright :)

I guess that's true. I keep forgetting that a lot of 'old timers' are no longer around. Old timers know Digitals to be Digital Scrap Book Pages, it's even know like that on their store front and has been for a very long time:

I like the rolled paper flowers too. Are we really going to play THAT game? I could go to ANY store and find dozens and dozens of products that are similar to other products.
Honestly - you SBG haters are looking so ridiculous right now. It is quite clear to everyone that there's a couple of people (maybe even 1 person answering their own posts) who have some kind of personal vendetta against Maya/SBG. Maybe you are a designer who was 'turned down', or maybe you are an ex-SBG designer who was 'let-go'...but it's quite obvious to non-designer blog readers like me that you are green with envy.

It would be so awesome to be able to filter out some designers so you don't have to scroll through their crap when looking at a store. I have stopped shopping at digiscrapwarehouse very often since I have to scroll through so much of Royanna's vomit.

What are you? A mental midget? That response is not even remotely funny.
Digital does NOT quality check every product in the store. They quality check the first few products a new member on the team puts out, and then they "random" check after that.
Probably because selling your store is a very poor business decision. Sure you make some extra sales but you also kill future sales (at a much more profitable price) for a good long while after... People don't think long term when they do this stuff.
Great point. When I see a designer has a "buy my store" sale, I have two immediate thoughts: (1) they need money NOW, and (2) they're in a design rut, haven't produced anything new in a while, and are trying to drum up interest in their designs.
I'm not sure about the second (thoughts?), but given the number of stories (new computer needed, living in car, can't go to Disneyland this weekend, etc.) associated with #1, it seems to be the more likely answer. Too bad so many designers seem to shoot themselves in the foot by doing it.

and you would know this because?? Actually the only store I know of that QCs every kit before it goes into the store is Plain Digital Wrapper. There may be others but it's hard to get enough people to QC every stinking kit in every stinking store. Stores don't pay enough or eventually you run out of kits to give free to the QCers. Not all QCers want the kits as payment either. Most stores do the best they can but hey what happened to getting on designers about QCing their own darn stuff before they ever put a kit up for sale. I'm not talking about the occasional hanging pixels or one jagged edge. I'm talking about the designers who have entire kits of bad quality.
LOL well if she had purchased the extended warranty she wouldn't have a tale of woe.
=============
Seriously? Extended warranties are shit, 99% of the time you'd be better off not buying it, it's a horrible waste of money.
Seriously? Extended warranties are shit, 99% of the time you'd be better off not buying it, it's a horrible waste of money.
^^^
That's ridiculous. For some reason people think that extended warranties are just a salesperson trying to make more money - but what they really are is protection. There's no electronics these days that are built to last, many of them are engineered to break after the first year. The extended warranty protects you from having to buy new ones in 14 months. I've never seen an extended warranty plan that 'sucks'. They cost money, sure, but all insurance costs money.
I agree on electronics being MADE to break. In fact, Dell just lost a huge lawsuit over knowingly using faulty video cards in their laptops. Video cards that overheat and catch FIRE. I know this because I took part in the lawsuit settlement. Its also not the first time Dell has been sued for using faulty parts, either. What's sick is it takes people losing their homes to fires for the public to be made aware.
Some extended warranties suck, some don't. The one I bought for a playstation 3 wasn't worth the time I spent standing in line. The one I bought for my laptop has paid for itself several times over.
Maybe it was where I got them, maybe the Accidental Breakage warranty is just way better than a run of the mill extended warranty.
You win some, you lose some.
How come nobody ever comments on all the copyrighted stuff Scrappin Cop uses? All that dollar store stuff she extracts...

I wondered this too. Or her "big head" halloween templates which are a direct copy of the stuff American Greetings put out for Halloween this year. Her stuff all looks junky anyway, I can't understand why everyone raves about her.

Not all designers are good business people so they are in need of money. And I think some are just drama queens like Royanna. Does anyone believe her stories anymore. Now that I think of it, I've never bought another thing from anyone who's store I bought. It wasn't intentional at all. I guess it just happened that way. So I guess selling your store may make some quick cash. But it isn't a long-term wise way to grow your business. Seriously I don't think some of the sub-par designers really care about growing a business. I think they are more concerned with quick cash.

ya know - I wonder if Gunhilde Storiede knows how much ...um..."influence" she has had on all these so-called Top Notch designers out there. Just saw this ad at DST from 9th & Bloom -
http://www.digishoptalk.com/boards/new-digital-products-33/9th-bloom-10-29-releases-258179/
see those accordian frames from Tracey Monette aka Clever Monkey Graphics?
then go here, and click on page 1 -
http://www.storeide.se/gunhild/
what a clever monkey, huh?
Monkey see ... monkey do! LOL
Yeah, they are the same idea, but they are not the only ones i have seen. At least, they are not Gunhild`s files (look at the shading, they are different). And it should be known, by now, that no idea will really be and stay exclusive to one designer (unless it is ugly enough that nobody will want to imitate it!)
And yes, Gunhild has "inspired" many designers. Why not? As long as they dont use her files, or claim they have invented it themselves, where is the problem?
^^^^^^^^^
how about simply because I'm tired of the "copying" of idea's. It seems as if when someone has NO new ideas, they simply copy someone else's. The rolled paper flowers are a good example. In the past month, there are tons of them out there, different edges, different shapes, different colors. But its all the same, like them or not. I have yet to see a new "spin" with these.
There is no actual harm in copying, I guess. I don't do it. But to each his own. I AM extremely tired of seeing it, tho.
What is the difference between "copying an idea" and "being inspired"?
Carbon copies are copying without a new spin to make it your own. But if you copy the idea and make it somewhat different, isn't it "inspiration"?
Who had the first "idea" for adding strings in a kit? or curved photo templates? or postage stamps? or torn edges on papers? or folded up corners? Long time ago, you could find SKETCHES online. Images that you can use to get inspired. Then, someone had the bright idea to create layered templates. Everyone copied that idea. I think there is a thing called "trend", and it exists in digiland as well as in real life. Ever noticed that?
Yes, Gunhild was the first person to figure out we could fold paper. It's a simple, simple idea, you can't call that copying because someone did it too... Gunhild probably got the idea from somewhere else that got the idea from somewhere else! Face it, there are no original ideas out there, everything is influenced by something else. Challenge: Find me a truly original product, and I'm sure someone here can link you to someone who had done it before.
Right. It is not like the invention of the telephone or the discovery of radiation. We are talking about DIGI craft that simulates anything you can find and do in real life. Get it? REAL LIFE. If you saw a string used in a real life layout, you can find it in a digi kit or a digi layout. Is that copying? Yes. But that is what we ALL do, ALL the time.
Thinking of it, the first scrappers who used sewing ribbons and buttons for their "paper scrap"... i guess they copied the sewing industry too! Oh my!!
Face it, unless there is a trademark associated with something, or a definite copyright, digi designers will copy ideas left and right. But that is in real life too.
When were you ever "inspired" to do something that was not based on something you saw, heard, felt, etc.?? Inspiration does not come from thin air.
While I agree that its pretty darn hard to find anything truly original out there - I do see OP's point. Those frames could have at least had the designer's own 'spin' on them. I hardly think that changing it from rectangular to squarish qualifies as 'spin'.
Why? If she made them from scratch, why can't she have plain folded frames? If not a single person purchases it from her, she'll know it wasn't a great decision. But if people buy it, then what's the big deal. Not everyone out there knows or cares that it's been done before. She could have put rhinestones on it, and then alienated all the people who don't want rhinestones. I'm not going to go on and on about how she's a visionary, an original, and unique... but you don't have to be any of those things, you just have to market it right.
I think that as long as you dont claim your "work" as super unique, and original, you CAN do something that is seen elsewhere. Even in real stores, how many different black lead yellow pencils with a pink eraser can you get? Nobody is screaming that company #1 is copying company #2. There are just some BASICS that will stay pretty... ordinary and similar. Do they need to add flowers or rhinestones or feathers or fluorescent paint to sell pencils? Maybe people DO want plain ordinary yellow pencils.
Putting your own twist is fine to make something unique, but do you need every single element to be totally unique never-seen-before all the time?
^^^^^^^
Thank GOD someone has some sense. You all get SOOOOOOO hung up on people being original here. Why can't you just find designers you like, buy their kits and leave everyone else alone? There are only so many ways a paper frame can be made. To knock someone because she folded some frames and put them in a kit after some other designer did....... It's a bit ridiculous, even for this blog.
I know I'm on a smack blog, but for Pete's sake, sometimes y'all bitch about the dumbest shit.
I'm seeing those wooden russian nesting dolls in a lot of design magazines and sites now, maybe they'll be the new owl!

DSA's BOTCT screws up again: http://digiscrapaddicts.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17800
They're allowing all the stores to continue in the voting even though there were mix ups about who was and was not eligible.
I think someone has let a little bit of power go to her head. She's pretty carried away with it all, if you ask me. Which, naturally, I realize you did not.
What happened to this being fun?
^^^^^
Competitions, generally, are not fun. There's always going to be someone who spoils it for others.
If they screwed up and need to do a new poll, they should do it right this time, by disqualifying the stores that didn't follow the rules. It's not at all fair to the stores that did follow the rules that everyone gets included because of a DSA screw up.
And it's total bullshit that no one is allowed to publicly say anything negative about it. Is Laura one of the owners. That's total bullshit - I won't be going back, ever, and if I ever have a CT they won't be competing in that.
The Scrap Orchard team layouts are really inappropriate. Especially the one BEC did. WTH? Do they not realize most of us are moms with children walking past our computers all the time?

On one of the store teams that's not getting many comments? Normally, I wouldn't pull the jealousy card, but the fact that you said 'stupid scrap contest' tells me that you have an active interest in the contest. You should have left out the word 'stupid', it just made you look childish and jealous.
You're kidding about that being offensive, right? There's more breast showing on the TV every day... more breast showing when I walk down any street. Good god, if that offends you you need to take a good hard look at yourself and ask why you find the human body so shameful. And do it soon, before you raise your kids to be as scarred as you are.
I will admit I am jealous - of that second gal's boobs!

I'm really happy for you that you don't know anyone in your family or circle of friends that has had breast cancer or come into contact with it. Some of us are not so lucky. My MIL has had a double mastectomy (and she's in her 70s) and one of our really good friends has had a lumpectomy. One of my art teachers was supposedly a survivor. She died earlier this month.
For these reasons, my child knows all about breast cancer and what it can do. I showed her those pages. She had a bit of an embarrassed giggle and wanted to know why there were boobies. When I told her why, she said it was a really cool thing to do.
I'm really glad that you have been fortunate enough to not encounter the ugly truth about breast cancer. However, I'm really sorry that you find a bit of innocent boobage in the name of a good cause offensive and inappropriate.
I showed the pages to both my sons, and they are in early adolescence, so they had little giggles too, until I told them about Breast Cancer and why it is important to raise awareness of self checking. Really young kids aren't even going to bat an eye at those photos, because they have no awareness of what 'naked' is or what 'boobies' are. Older kids will get a bit silly, but they are old enough to be taught why in this case photos of breasts are an important educational tool.
One of the big reasons breast cancer goes undetected is that women don't want to touch their own breasts while looking in the mirror.
What a messed up society we live in that we'd rather die than face
parts of our body that are sometimes used for sex.
1:01 AM You are a REAL bitch.
It has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with women being loose trash. It's extremely unnecessary. But then, I should know better than to express a conservative opinion among this crowd.
And to make the assertion that I am overprotective and thus producing serial killers/rapists? You are out of your mind rude.
Ladies, you've missed the point. I don't have a problem with the message. I think the partial nudity is inappropriate. The point could have easily been made with a nice photo of each of them wearing a pink t-shirt.
I think they did what they did to introduce a little bit of sensationalism, stir up controversy and make people buzz about their layouts (and then maybe vote for them too). I'm sure some of you would call it clever marketing and you are just as entitled to your opinion as I am. And I think its distasteful.
And for the record... my aunt died of breast cancer, I do the 3-day every year... and no, I've never come in contact with anyone who feels the need to flash semi-nudity on the internet in support of "the cause."
This is what happens when you ASSUME you know where someone else is coming from or what they've gone through when you have no clue. You make an ass of yourself.
^^^^^^
wow, you sure like to name call don't you. I'm a bitch and the girls who mad the pages are trash.
Every else managed to have a conversation without name calling.

=======================
I see your point, I don't know that I agree with eveything you say, but I see they are using the emotion of a killer disease to gain an advantage in a contest. The message might be right, but the purpose to which it is placed makes what they are doing tasteless.
As someone who has battled breast cancer and waiting for results as I could very well be fighting it again I thought the layouts were wonderful. I loved how they gave a message when put together. I agree with the other poster who stated you see more on tv. I think they were very tastefully done and feel that a pink t-shirt wouldn't have the same impact. Me in a pink t-shirt with 'survivor' on it wouldn't have the same impact as you seeing the aftermath of what it does to you. I don't mean the mastectomy/recon scars either.
I see your point, I don't know that I agree with eveything you say, but I see they are using the emotion of a killer disease to gain an advantage in a contest. The message might be right, but the purpose to which it is placed makes what they are doing tasteless.

Yep, you sure did.
I think the SO girls rocked the challenge. They worked together-as a team-which is the point of the contest. They scrapped a very important message, tastefully and beautifully. You see much, much worse than that in tv commercials about bras for goodness' sakes! Those of you with a problem about this are the same ones that bitch about everything else I imagine so shut the fuck up, I'm sick of your stupid & close-minded opinions.
I'm curious, how many kits or element packs established designers may sell when they release a new product? And after the intitial release is done, how many do you normally sell over the next few months, do you sell most of them right the first week or later when they start showing up on random peoples layouts?
And how many kits/element packs did you sell when you first started?
WOW! Trash? Really? There was less skin there than you'd see on a beach. Calling those girls trash is just wrong. I can't even begin to see your point.
As for sensationalizing breast cancer, please tell me you are kidding. Isn't October breast cancer awareness month?
This month I've seen in my own small town shirts that say, "Save the TaTas, boobies, etc.
I think the people calling the scrap orchard ct trash and other names need to get a grip. They look like a talented bunch of girls and it's obvious some people are threatened by them.
I think that those images were a little intimate. They were not necessarily wrong, (well, i think the one with the hands was not needed) just not necessary to get your point across. And let's face it, they did it that way to get a reaction, which we have all given them. So knowing that, we can all say they tried to push the envelope a little. I had many family members die of cancer, so I think it was a good cause, just not needed to support the cause.
It has everything to do with women being loose trash.
---------
I'm going to assume that you're a woman too, and thus loose trash.

LMAO!!!
A lot of designers have a statement in their TOU about nudity not being scrapped with their kits. I wonder if the designers whose kits were used approve?
There are digiscrap galleries that wouldn't allow it to be posted, too. And then I guess because they'd enforce their rules, y'all would scream and yell about them not caring about the cause, too.
That is NOT nudity.
someone is quite a prude
Just wow ... if that offends you, I seriously wonder how you manage to leave your house every day and go out into the world. Where I live, it is now legal to walk around topless if one so chooses. Not that I'm in agreement with that, but jeez, pretty much everything was covered up, I've seen much, much more of people out in public. I guess women with their breast exposed while breast feeding in public offends you too?
Women who breastfeed in public generally use a drape. Not really the same thing.
And let's face it, they did it that way to get a reaction, which we have all given them.

The only reason there's a reaction is because some uptight hypocrite decided to post here and be outraged.

That young? I agree there is no age for talent, if he has some, but i am a bit surprised that Maya would "hire" someone that young. I remember one designer asking suggestions about hiring a teen (about that age) as a CT and letting her sell a few things, and most designers suggested to stay clear of that situation exactly because of the age. Hum...

(and how many shops is she in, anyway? like 5? 6? 57? obviously a very slight exaggeration) I've always thought of her as a Quantity-over-quality kind of designer... she just cranks out stuff week after week, same shit, (same tired old patterns and elements) different colors... nothing special or any different from 1000 other mediocre designers (IMO), except that she pumps out more of it, assembly-line style.
Re Kneipp is only 14 years old. I wonder if his mom signed his designer contract?

If that's his picture in his designer header, I call BS.
Studio Q isn't SuzyQ, the style isn't her her design style at all. And True Blue is jennamy82 on forums.
