My point was this, you can spend the whole rest of your life finding every kit you think is breaking Disney's copyright or trademark and post it here. Be my guest. That doesn't mean I have to be thrilled about it. Are you turning them into their shop owners or reporting it to Disney? Or are you just pasting links and then whining because it's "not fair" and you're such an upstanding citizen you'd never do anything like that, blah, blah, blah. I'm not excusing them or defending them. Yes, I think it's wrong. No I won't buy "Disney-ish" designs, but pouting about it is just wasting everyone's time. It's starting to feel like a witch hunt, when now you've moved on to posting links for a hat with two circles on top in a completely non-Disney themed kit. If you come across something too close for comfort, don't buy it, send the link to Disney/the store owner, and move on. We all get it. It's totally not fair that they are making bank selling illegal kits and you are so above it, so you aren't. It's understood. Move on.

It must not be easy to be a "good/established" designer and go to an exclusive store.

Maybe she owned her own store and felt conflicted. SBG is awesome for it's customer base alone. Seven years in the business has gotta say something.

I like it when people link up to kits that infringe on copyright. I don't just not buy that kit, I will not buy from that designer at all. I appreciate the help identifying designers to avoid.

When I link up kits, I have already reported them. I am not the only one linking though so I don't know if others do the same.

Anonymous said...

Nope, I'm not. Just an ordinary customer.

Anonymous said...

Best in the industry, huh? Um...as a customer, then you should know better by now. Too many problems with QC, and no or little response from management about it. There are SO many other designers that can not only out-shine the designers at SBG, in concept and originality as well as quality...they are NOT stuck on themselves or their precious SBG name...I would rather buy from them, and DO buy from them, than anyone associated with SBG. It's my opinion only, learned from experience. As for the comment earlier about how wonderful little Miss Flergs is....her designs are becoming toooo repetitive of anything else you might find out there. Show me a designer with a little originality and creativity, and they will have themselves a new customer.

Anonymous said...

Many designers ARE original, creative and have good quality products. They dont NEED to brag about it everywhere as their products will speak volume on their own. Nobody can (or should) claim to be the most original, the most creative or the best as there surely are others elsewhere with just as good if not better products. A designer or store bragging to be the best is not usually something that will convince me to go shop there, in fact, that attitude might even be a deterrent.

Anonymous said...

______________

I hear this complaint all the time here at this site but I never hear any names. I've never had a problem at SBG. No, I'm not Maya or an SBG designer. I just think if you're going to moan and groan ... put up or shut up. Vague and generic complaints don't seem legitimate.

Anonymous said...

We all have our own likes and dislikes. Personally I shop at SBG alot, have for many years now and plan to keep shopping there for many years to come.
Myself, I've never experienced any customer service issues at all, rather the complete opposite. I've had nothing but amazing service from them. There are a couple of stores out there where I haven't even rec'd a response to issues I've had.

I'm nothing but just a regular customer, not a designer or Maya lol.

Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in for a different point of view.

whinging I get, that's the non-North American version. But Distorded and Congradulations are just mis-spelled words, based on sounding the word out.

Some people whine and some people whinge (rhymes with hinge by the way). Wine, whinge....... same thing - so why bash people who spell UK English instead of US English? It was, afterall, UK spelling that came before US spelling. The US changed it to suit themselves while the UK and those countries that follow the UK spelling left it as it was originally. Ass or Arse, color or colour, favorite or favourite - we all know what they mean so stop dissing each other.

I'd say solid mid-level stores: Gotta Pixel, Elemental Scraps, Scrapbook Bytes... not sure who else.

I'd say the top tier list the PP posted is pretty accurate- though a few of those stores are what I'd call Mid-High level- TDC is not in the same tier as SSD- though it is high level KWIM?

Absolute top tier- Designer Digitals, Sweet Shoppe Designs, and The Lilypad IMHO

Digi Chick
Oscraps
Zig Zag Scrap

Midlevel
Gotta Pixel
Scrapbook Bytes

Pickleberry Pop
Scrap Matters
Sunshine Studios
Funky Playground
Shabby Pickle (6 months ago it was a top store but that fell apart quick)

I'm not sure about the plastic things (wheels?). About the blocks, if there is something written on them like 'megablock' or 'lego', than it's definitely a copyright violation. If not, I guess it'd be ok. A lot of generic companies make no-brand blocks like that. JMO

There are no names attached to the items so no they are not in violation of copyright law. Shapes in and of themselves can not be copyrighted and nameless blocks can not be trademarked. If they said lego on them they would be in violation.

This x 100. For real. I'll admit, I love reading about pirating or designers stealing from each others kits, and even "behind the scenes" drama from stores. But I am completely sick of hearing about "copyright violations".

I think it's been said over and over again, that unless you create it yourself, somebody, somewhere probably holds a copyright to it. How far you want to push that is your own problem. Just report it and move on.

Anonymous said...

I was the OP on the SS kit and I only asked because I wanted to know, for real, if that was ok. Because I have blocks already extracted that I wanted to use in a kit but was told I couldn't when I emailed to ask for permission. So I asked here to see what everyone else thought and if it was ok if you took the brand off. Didn't mean to go into the copyright violations again.

Anonymous said...

I give you permission. Does that make you feel better?

I always have to laugh at the 'but they're doing it' mentality. It's either right or wrong, and you do the right thing or the wrong thing, regardless of who else is doing it. The company told you no, so no.

Anonymous said...

Again I totally agree. I wasn't asking for permission.
I was asking for opinions. Not coming on here to tattle or get someone else in trouble. I was genuinely interested in where people thought the line should be drawn and in opinions. Sorry to get your panties in a wad. I will try to to do that m'am.

My friends and I were just having a conversation about this the other day, the "Top Tier" stores that is. Designer Digitals, HO3, Jessica Sprauge, 2Peas, DHD, are absolutely the home of the super stars of the digital scrapbook industry. These stores are in a league of their own completely as compared to other trendy top tier stores such as A5D, SBG, SSD, ect. Not to say they are better by any means, nor that they are the only stores with superstar talent, but they are some how in a different league altogether. It wouldn't be far fetched to imagine these "super star" stores house some of the highest profiting designers in the business. I know this may bruise some egos here, but there is a whole world of digi scrappers out there who know nothing about forums, smack blogs, or even CT's for that matter. These scrappers think of Ali Edwards, Rhonna Farrer & Carina Gardner, ect. as the huge names in digi. It seems the majority of women on this blog really have no grasp of the digital scrapbook business whatsoever. There is quite a bit more to the industry than what is talked about on this blog or at digishoptalk. It's only the "Hub" of the digital scrapbooking community that is apart of it people. There are PLENTY that aren't. Step out of your box once in a while. (speaking generally) And please don't take this personally and assume that I'm wrong just because your uninformed.

By the way has anyone seen that Cosmo Cricket is doing digi now?!?!? (Selling at JessicaSprauge) Way cute. Love that some of my favorite paper companies are now going digi, especially since I haven't picked up a paper trimmer in probably 3 years. Notice how things like this are never mentioned on this blog? Many of you will say, "Who is Cosmo Cricket". Well, my point exactly.

It's weird, I'm looking at this stuff from Jessica Sprague and HO3 and I couldn't even tell you how to scrap with some of that stuff and I'd say you're crazy to pay $4.99 for 8 papers. Maybe some of those scrappers need to "step outside their box"

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Not saying that everyone will love these stores. And absolutely not trying to start a discussion about how wonderful they are or aren't. Obviously everyone's opinion is going to be based on personal preference. Just trying to shine some light on a large and profitable area of digital scrapbooking that is strangely never mentioned here. (I say strangely, but it may have a lot to do with the fact that that side of the industry is not involved with digi shop talk, which is where this blog stems from.) I figured if we really want to have a discussion about top tier stores this may be an interesting side for some of the woman and even designers who don't know much about that side of the industry.

Designer Digitals, HO3, Jessica Sprauge, 2Peas, DHD, are absolutely the home of the super stars of the digital scrapbook industry.
-----

Don't make me laugh! HO3 and Jessica Sprague on the whole have only comparatively recently ventured into digi and that's only because they realized there was a whole market out there they were missing out on. DHD? Seriously?
The only two I would take seriously out of the ones you mentioned are 2Peas and Designer Digitals.

Just because some of those designers were super stars in paper, doesn't mean they can and do cut it in the digi world.

And really, why is there this need to rank a store? Why the fuck care? Shop were you want and it doesn't and shouldn't matter if it's top tier or not. Sheesh. Even Barneys and Nordstroms have crap I don't want to buy.

Some of us do digi for a reason, you know. Even you have confessed to not using a paper trimmer for some time. Digi is a lot cheaper

ScrapGirls just make me laugh! They condsider themselves top of the tops, but their stuff is ugly. Yeah, some of you will say they are classic, but in my opinion they are just crap. And ohhh, they are having a HUGE sale, 17.8% + 11% with a coupon! What a deal! Go go go!

By the way, I hate the fact that most designers are young, because on their birthday they have a sale with their age: 22%, 23%, up to 33. Why can't they be 75 or 80 years old?
(That's why Maya, Stacey from Gotta and the Chief Eater of Oreos [how funny is that?!?] will never have a birthday/age related sale !)

Anonymous said...

It's interesting about those other places - I just found many of them recently (HO3, DHD) and I wondered why I had never heard of them before.

Here's the trouble with most of them (Scrapgirls, DHD, HO3, Jessica Sprague and a lot of stuff at 2Ps): Anybody who has Photoshop, or even Photoshop Elements can make what they're selling. Ya got some solids, some polkas, some plaid, a large print, a small print, & a couple of stripes. Crystal Wilkerson, especially, just changes the colorways on her papers and voila! she's got another set. If you want to drop by today for Photoshop Friday (Jessica Sprague) you can learn how to make a photo semi transparent! That is, if you've never used a slider before.

Design House Digitals DHD has a bunch of free stuff on their site, and if you're on their mailing list, they have 25c kits and $1.00 kits...I'm not sure what all they have and I'm not saying I think you'll love it, but it's not awful.

I'm not sure who their (all the places listed above) customers are, but I really, really can't buy something for more than $1.00 that I could make as well or better. Nan Scott Designs is a new one of similar ilk, and the store kit papers look more like wrapping paper than scrap paper; it looks cheap to me with no texture.

One place that has never been mentioned is a store that's dedicated to the memory of Katie Pertiet (one of my favorite designers who is very much still alive). Her place is called Designer Digitals; the knock off place is Digital Designer Shop (Cilenia Curtis of the recent DSA contest - links have recently been posted here.). I swear the first time I went there it actually said it was in honor of DD (maybe not exact words, but very close) I don't see it now, tho.

My favorite stores are none. Couldn't care less about any of them or who runs them or who owns them or who used to own them. I go by the designer (newsletter subscriptions with links, and sometimes blogs) and I don't bother to keep track of stores. I started digiscrapping at a time when it was like musical chairs and I set up my file system by store -- oh, yeah, I changed that great idea real quick!

The designers who only have Facebook are SOL because I don't follow or 'like' anybody.

And finally, who would bother shopping from Saturday - Thursday at SBE when they know everything will be 40% off on Fridays in October?

I'll admit I never paper scrapped a day in my life. I was looking at Jessica Sprague's store and those kits don't even look like kits to me. Her Echoes of Asia freebie kit has 3 ribbons, a word art, 3 paper patches, 3 journaling blocks, and 2 frames. I wouldn't have any idea how to scrap with so few elements and such flat looking designs. Are places like hers geared more toward paper-turned-digi scrappers? As a purely digi scrapper, it all looks completely unusable to me.

Anonymous said...

I agree, and yes I think they mainly attract paper-scrappers who are dabbling in digi. I think that once those scrappers learn how to use their software, they move on to more "digi-only" sites with more choices and variety.

Maybe targetting hybrid too? Like those few elements might be easy enough to print, cut and place on actual paper background?

Just because you (general) don't particularily care for someone, think their designs are crap, etc and hard as it might seem, every time someone gets dissed here, the interest of that designer goes way up and/or it doesn't affect the designer's ability to sell one iota. Personal vendetta's usually can be seen as such and the same designer bashing gets old since no one really cares and the designers continue to carry on even if you don't like them.

Ahhh yes I know this is a smak blog but really it's the same ol same ol discussions about general poor QC and lousy design really doesn't cut it. Yes, you (general) make these comments all the time but who really cares about generalizations. If you want to make a point at least tell us what was wrong with the QC. Why you specifically call a designer out, why you know for a fact that a store has poor customer service.

Smaking just to smak is getting really boring and about 2/3rds of this current thread hasn't really enlightened us. Jealousy reigns and yawn....that gets really old also. Crawling back in my hole now.

Anonymous said...

That 2500 includes any freebies, too, and I think they had a big freebie when they opened. I wouldn't give much weight to the invoice number.

looks like you can still purchase the kits any time during the month like you normally would have, so seems like it's just an additional option which if you don't prefer to subscribe then nothing has changed? I didn't subscribe yet, but am seriously considering it. I usually end up purchasing the collection every month anyway. I end up using usually everything each month, with the occasional kit that just doesn't interest me. Even if there's a kit or two I don't use each month, it's still a great deal.

Maybe she meant "interesting" in that 2Peas has so many new designers?

LOVE Hazel-Olive designs. I'm not sure what was going on with MScraps -- I don't think she had much new stuff in the months she was there.

The trouble with 2peas (and Acot) is their stores are too confusing to shop because of having paper and digital. I have found more than once when shopping that I got in the paper section by mistake. Now I don't bother going there.

Edeline is a really nice person, and her kits are easy to scrap with. Whether they are your taste or not is up to you.

Rigdon needs to pull up every element to 100% before she puts out her kits so she can see how blurry some of them are. 'Rainy Day' for those of you who need details. I bought the whole kit and kaboodle the instant I saw it and was so disappointed!

Especially since an adult is supposed to be more mature than an 11 year old and know the difference. If she is that way, maybe it was because she had a good example of how to be one. I am pretty sure an eleven year old only does what they see or what they are allowed to do.

You could help her by showing you you love her and watch how things turn around. I am shocked that a mother could say this about her own child, regardless of how they act.

LMAO you all are bunch of fuck tards, Only shopping at a store that you think it top tier or whatever. Do you not think that some of these stores that arent top tier IYO have anything worth a shit? Think again, and the stores that you think are all high and mighty have some of the shittiest CS out there because they think they are all that so they can just walk all over people and they will still keep coming back. They give 2 shits less about you unless you are showing them the green!! Oh and SSD is not what I would consider to be top tier, their shit all looks the same just different designers.
