"This blog has very little to do with the whole of the digi community"

What do you think? I really have no idea how many people post here. I am sure there is a mix of store owners, designers and scrappers. I seriously doubt there are many Digi Newbies hanging out here. It is not like this blog is linked up on the top 50 Digi sites.
Do people really not post layouts in galleries because of fear of backlash from the blog? I doubt it. I do think there have been some issues that have come to light because of the blog, some good, some not so good. Lots of speculation here, some truth, some lies. I tend to believe where there is smoke there is fire. That is why the same names seem to appear on the blog.

Quoted from previous thread:
"This blog can most definitely intimidate people into not posting at digi sites! Someone posts a LO or responds to a thread and there are pages and pages on this blog picking people apart, drawing false conclusions and outright lies.

People talk and share their stories of what is done to people here and of course some people will be skittish to share their personal photographs/layouts/feelings. You have to be naive to think that doesn't happen. There are people with feelings on the other side of the computer!"

I found it a little rude that neither Shannon or her husband could come online & wish Ripal success or a public thanks for all that she's done.
---------------

Agreed. It's just more proof that Shannon really doesn't care about DST anymore. She's too busy with her family, which I have no problem with. However, why not hand over the site to someone who does care?

December 6, 2009 5:04 PM

So other than spending an extra ten seconds typing "Good-bye and good luck!," what does the truly caring site owner do? How would Shannon's involvement improve DST?

Not all artsy scrappers are fantasy scrappers.

You could also easily do 'normal' pages with that kit.

Ironically, I usually have this problem from English speaking designers.

December 6, 2009 5:05 PM
-----------------
Well, that makes it worse then, doesn't it.

It's not brain surgery, which is why I'm not talking about spelling "colour" instead of "color." I'd be fine with that.

It's those other little mistakes that put me off, like a piece of cheese with just a touch of green mold (or mould, for you Brits) in the corner. Does anyone actually say "you whispered to my ear"? No, people say "you whispered in my ear." It's subtle, and that's why I figure it's a problem with English being a secondary language.

If English is your first language and you're making these kinds of mistakes, well...I suggest checking your local community college for a remedial English course ASAP.

It's two countries actually. Canada uses the same spelling as the US.

Actually many Canadians still use the British spelling of words. Myself being one of them, although either version is accepted in schools nowadays. Most still spell with the 'ou' but leave the 'me' off program.

That's a common enough thing IRL, I can think of at least two restaurants in my area that sell coupon books, and then the Entertainment Book too. But I have never bought those things. I'd be interested to know if it's selling, I can't really see people paying money for digital scrapbooking coupons. Esp ones that expire the same month you buy them.

December 7, 2009 9:48 AM
--------------------
I poked around on the site. They'd have to pay ME cash money--no coupons--to download something onto my ehd. But I think the paid coupon idea is innovative for the scrap world, and would work if they can find enough people who want to buy from all those designers.

Which brings me to my next question. It's an honest question for those who might know. Is there always a customer for every kit? Are some kits (especially on your less mainstream sites) never bought by anyone?

Anonymous said...

It's hard to tell if a kit doesn't sell at all. The absense of any "customers also bought" at the bottom isn't a true indication. If everyone who bought th item only bought that item and nothing more from that store it won't show up. If 10 people bought a kit as a single sale ie: only bought that one kit and nothing else, it will still not show any other "also boughts" at the bottom.

Anonymous said...

In my particular case, I've never not sold anything. Some things I have only sold one of, some I have sold over 50 but never none.

If you only sell one of something, is your hourly rate less than $1.00? That would really stink, unless you are doing it just because you enjoy the work.

I've often wondered if designing is a business that people make a living at or are they supplementing their regular income.

-- Anne

Anonymous said...

I do enjoy doing it. I wouldn't be a designer if I was in it solely for the money. I have a full-time "regular" job, so when I actually did start designing for money, it was just a nice extra income but I never have and never will rely on it. I couldn't because then I think I would start to hate it. But anyway, sometimes I get ideas in my head that I think are good that no one else seems to or I don't put it up at the right time. Who knows why some things don't sell well.

we have entertainment coupon books here too but they are good for an entire year and they have thousands and thousands of dollars worth of discounts. that promo is only worth $21 in coupons I think, so the asking price is roughly 1/4 the coupon price. entertainment books are $30 I think -- would people buy them if they only had a $120 worth of coupons?

Has anyone done something like "Gold member Status" or something- not a membership, but something that shows how much you have spent at a store? Almost like frequent flyer points and the "clubs" it opens. I think it would satisfy some egos around.

Anonymous said...

I see your point about the Entertainment book...even with the thousands in coupons, I still don't pay the $30 to get the book. My point was more that it wasn't a really novel idea to sell coupons. I can see it working for some of the bigger sites that don't often have sales.

A few stores have done something like that. You get so many points for spending so much and then you can cash in your points when you've earned so many. I don't think it worked all that well though, as the few stores who used to do it, don't do it any more.

Let me see if I’ve got this Santa business straight. You say he wears a beard, has no discernible source of income and flies to cities all over the world under cover of darkness? You sure this guy isn’t laundering illegal drug money?” ~Tom Armstrong

Ho! Ho! Ho! And Jingle Bells

Ho! Ho! Ho! and Jingle Bells,
What's all the fuss about?
The rich food and the drinkies,
Only inflame my bloody gout.

My credit card has almost melted,
From persistent overuse,
And my liver is near failure,
From pre-Christmas Party abuse.

My blood sugars are elevated,
And my blood pressure is sky high,
I was feeling really well before lunch,
But now I think I'm going to die!

Nobody liked the presents that I bought,
And the family is at war,
So much for Christmas Spirit,
And that's all I asked Santa for,

Now no-one is talking to me,
While I lie here exiled in the Sun,
With my belt unbuckled and my gut exposed,
Thanking God that this Christmas is done.

Yeah, it's called a CT download. Some products go into the stores before they go active and a CTM can download it, so I'm assuming because it goes through the 'payment' process, it shows up as an also bought when it goes live.

Keeping in mind that I've only been scrapping since last year, I probably spent around $750, but that's just an estimate. It could even be (gulp) more. 2010 won't see any money from me.

Just because ome of us spent a whole lot less than you, doesn't mean it's dead for us. It just means we are using what we have, instead of having it gather dust on the hard drive. Not all of us need or want the latest.

I think in the whole time I've been scrapping, which is almost five years, I may have spent that much money. Maybe.

Anonymous said...

I'd say that $1000 over five years is a pretty active customer, $4 a week roughly, which is a couple of kits a month at least. I reckon probably most scrappers don't spend that much, yet they would not consider the hobby dead.

I do think it's interesting that several big digiscrap sites are now focussing more and more on altered art stuff, the accepted wisdom seems to be that's where the scrap money is going, for now.

Anonymous said...

^^^^^^

I only spent that amount as it was part of my designer income. Otherwise, I probably have spent around $200, if that, over five years? Not sure.

I like the altered stuff but that's probably because it's what I was doing before digi scrapping.

I just checked my paypal and I've spent less than $100 this year on scrap supplies. I get most of my supplies for free from the teams I CT for. Occasionally, I buy CU items.

I've spent much more on computer software and photobook printing.

Personally, I think more people should post here with a name, even if it's a totally fake name...at least it's easier to follow conversations instead of every post being 'anonymous'.

Anonymous said...

I've spent minimal on computer software as I had most of it already and just needed the upgrades. And absolutely zero on photo book printing.

Anyone read the Viovio post? On the one hand, the company could have been more tactful. On the other hand, it's fun to see what's obviously been a pain in the ass customer told to take her business elsewhere.

Does reading her story make you vow to never send them a penny of your business?

-- Anne

Nope, in fact, it makes me want to deal with them, just to see what they are like.

I'm so sick of the customer is always right attitude. Sometimes, they are just painful and they need to be told.

you know, does it take a letter from a company for someone to "get it"?
me, clappin' hands for the company...they probably have her log of emails on a wall of shame and say..hey so and so ordered another book..who wants to go screw it up?
I bet they have a lottery for her order...just wait for her to order yet again and not be satisfied...and pay money...woot...pays the bills!

One SSD is enough for me, I don't need SSD Lite, too. It's a shame, SO used to have it's own style / identity. Now it's basically just riding SSD's coattails.

Sadly, it's not even about talent. It's about popularity. One store is where all the cheerleaders work, the other one is where the earnest, nice, but not as popular people work. And since designing is a business, I just assume you want to be popular and make money.

Say for the sake of argument, you're 100% right. The thread is motivated out of pure friendship and love, just as most of the DST interactions are.

And you defend what you think is okay, so saying you'd promote a designer for a kit is really not such a big leap.
If living in make believe allows me to see brown nosing at DST, then I'll be happy to set up house in MakeBelieve. I'll have lots of great neighbors who see things as I do.

My Christmas gift to you is to give you the last word on this.
I have cookies to bake, presents to wrap- getting a bona fide card-carrying DST fan to admit she approves of brown nosing is an exercise in frustration. Merry Christmas!

This is a message for the DD Designer that has the please give my boys a christmas sale going on.. You are pathetic. You have a please help give my boys a christmas sale yet you have a pic on your FB of a huge ass tree with a shit ton of ornaments and a flat screen tv. Please stop with the poor piss me crap. Look I am not even having a christmas this year as it is a tough year for everyone. Yes I am a designer but you do not see me posting please give my family a christmas with pictures of a huge ass tree and a big screen tv in the background. No you wont see a tree in my house because we did not get one. That is my problem not the worlds and I sure as hell am not going to go begging for people to come buy my stuff to give my family a christmas. Christmas is not about the tree, how many gifts ect you can buy it is about being with family! You are pathetic and you know who you are.You should be ashamed and I hope that you do not sell one single item because everyone knows you are a con. You do this every damn year!

I have an extra tree, three actually and tons of ornaments and lights too. (We closed our business this year also, so I have a BUNCH of decorations and things I will NEVER need.) All sitting out in the shed not being used. I would love for someone to have them.

:(

Wish I knew who you were, I would should give them to you.

**and I agree, that kind of sale is sick. Trying to play on peoples spirit of giving to make a buck. Have a sale, thats fine, but why cant it be a "Happy Holidays Sale" or a "Merry Christmas Sale"

Wonder who will be the first designer to have a "my toilets clogged and I need a plumber" sale.

Am I the only one who actually likes threads like this? lol I love finding new designers that I haven't used before. I read these kinds of threads and I've discoverd lots of new product that I love that way. I actually prefer that designers and CTMs answer them as well as the average Jane scrapper so that more product is covered. I don't really care who it is answering it, I just want to see who is out there.

If all you are looking for is some new templates to scrap with, why do you care who answers the thread? The purpose for places like DST is for scrappers to share their art and find new product. But also for designers and stores to advertise their product.

I guess I just don't feel like there is any reason to be bitter or angry about designers using DST threads as they are intended to be used.

It's kind of like this blog, if what you read there/here annoys you, don't go there and read it. It's that simple.

Anonymous said...

You aren't the only one who likes these threads. I've looked through the more specific ones--templates, alphas, actions--to find stuff I like. I never read the favorite designer, store, or digi hangout threads, but I don't have any animosity toward them either.

You are so right about the if you don't like it, don't read it! People are always looking for something to complain about, but seriously, this is way too petty.

As much as I hate to stick my neck out for Royanna, it IS possible to have both a "big ass" Christmas tree AND a flat screen TV and still not have money for Christmas presents. We are having a very small Christmas this year, as my husband has been laid off for 6 months, but we still have our tree and ornaments (artificial tree, so it's the same stuff every year) and as much as my kids want presents, I don't think selling our TV to buy them would go over well.

I agree that the sale is incredibly tacky, and that it's extra irritating because it's Royanna. But it's not fair to assume that just because someone could afford nice things a few months ago, they are lying when they say they don't have money now.

Anonymous said...

Thanks to the ladies that tried to make me feel better but honestly I was not here looking for sympathy. I am not the con. That is why I remain annon. I truly appreciate the offering of the tree that is really a sweet thing to offer but my family is happy just being together. We are healthy and happy and that is what matters. Christmas is so commercialized anymore. I have no desire even this year to do anything. I just smile to see all my friends and others enjoying the season and being happy. People like her though, they do not deserve any of the above!! Also yes next week she will be in her car again! At least she will have all those nice gifts she sponged off whoever she could. You know if you are really in need there is agencies out there that will help you but I am sure once they walk in your house and see that big television and tree they will realize you are a con like the rest of us have. Just be thankful that your alive and have a roof over your head woman!

Anonymous said...

December 22, 2009 2:59 PM

Just to let you know,I would not have opened my mouth but she was just crying that she did not have a tree or decorations ect. Also she was living in her car a couple months ago so if that was the case then she should have sold that tv to get out of that situtation it if was that bad. Also she had internet the whole time she was living in her car because she posted from her expensive black berry phone which requires internet to post online. So she was caught in yet another lie. Not to be snoody but really she is just one of those people that prey off the kindness of others and it is sad and I feel sorry for those that keep falling for it.

I dont' have any animosity at all. Just saying that those designers pimping their stuff were not answering the question in the thread title. It's no different to those designers who reply to ISO posts with an item that is nothing like what the OP asked for. The question was "Who is your favorite template designer?" not "Show me YOUR templates".

Anonymous said...

The title said who's your favorite template designer. The actual post said: "Love templates and looking for new designers to buy from. I absolutely love Susan and Crystal's templates. Who else is out there?"

Sounds exactly like she was looking for new template designers. I'm guessing that she got what she wanted from that thread. If you were actually looking for a template designer, and read over that thread, you'd have no problem at all with it.

I'm curious about your motivation for posting that. Seems like you just want to stir up trouble on a dying blog by bringing up some month old thread to insinuate that designers are ruining the industry. Quite frankly, there is no industry without the designers.

If you don't want them to advertise in the iso threads at DST, where do you deem it appropriate for designers to advertise? And seriously, if you hold no animosity towards designers, why post that? Makes no sense to me.

Dearest Anonymous, you summed that up so beautifully! Yes, this is a dying blog. There isn't anything to complain about for now, so stirring up trouble is the order of the day. Eventually there will be another scandal, and it's only a question of will the blog still be here to exploit it? Time will tell, and in the meantime we can all enjoy being ridiculous and petty, which is always fun to do, or we can judge how ridiculous and petty everyone else is--also fun.

I used to like Janet Phillips but all of her flitting around is irritating. Especially after the whole leaving TheDailyDigi for time with her family and then being a regular poster there and now at SSD.

I would have a lot more respect for her if she said, "I get bored easily and like to change things up often."

I don't know why but I am especially irritated because I bought a bunch of her stuff at her last sale because she marketed it like she would never be back again...only to be selling her templates at TDD a few weeks later and now at SSD. That bothers me.

Won't be buying anything from her again...not to mention she is is way out done by so many of the newer template designers. Pay attention folks, Janet is putting squares on a 12x12 layout. She rarely does element guides or anything interesting. You don't need a template to do that.

Why does that bother you? You got a bargain, right? So what's your problem?
