You definitely need to calibrate your monitor (s). There is nothing wrong with those colors palettes.
If it's a matter of preferences, you must not like a lot of kits out there. Show us a few examples of what is not gross according to you. I'm curious.

-----------
I definitely do not. My monitors are perfectly fine. Just because I think a color swatch is hideous doesn't mean my monitor is out of whack.

I think Wyld Web Designs kit would have been the stand-out if it weren't for all those gross brown papers. It's not that the brown is gross by itself, or the blue, or the red, but all together with mostly black/brown and white elements? Swing and a miss. That has nothing to do with monitor calibration. lol

Don't even get me started (again) on that peach kit. Add a neutral. Something to break it up instead of it all blending together or clashing miserably.

That all said, I'm torn to choose a winner. I have it between two.

Wyld Web Designs. I think she needs some good lessons in color theory, but her quality is pretty decent and she has nice paper textures. Some of her doodles are weird looking and not overly usable, though, but those could be easily rethought if she merely scrapped with them herself. I think with a little more fine tuning, she could do much better than ScrapMatters.

Band Geek Designs. Her quality is decent and she does some nice and fun kits. Her style fits in at ScrapMatters more than Wyld Web for sure. I don't see her doing better than ScrapMatters, though, unless she beefs her kit elements up. Seriously, why would I pay $6 for this? http://www.digiridooscraps.com/shop/product.php?productid=17947&cat=0&page=1

Are scrappers/designers lazy or CU designers thinking so? Looking at some "CU Tools", I really wonder.

Are graphic programs so complicated to use for most people? How many steps would it take to do that from scratch?

Why do some store owners/designers feel that if they set up something that is 'unique' that the site and forums will just run themselves?

All the excitement in the first few months, only to have it fizzle and pop later and then they wonder why they have to close? Maybe, just maybe, it's because they couldn't be bothered to take an active interest.
-----------------------------------
Being a good designer or having something unique does not make you a smart business person. Some are but some aren't.

Anonymous said...

You are taking a strong stand against registering in a forum? Why?
----------------------------------
Because I am sick of Forums selling my email address to spammers. And YES they do!!

Anonymous said...

For what it's worth, you can see the preview of the kits in the forums. So you don't have to register to see what they look like. But you do have to register if you want to download anything.

As has been said before, the CU products have gotten out of hand. If a designer can't google a few tutorials and learn how to do cork board or bevels herself, she seriously should not be designing.

Well, it doesn't matter about scrappers, does it? Whatever makes their pages. Designers on the other hand should be advised to use their programs so they can make something at least vaguely unique.

Big surprise. I find it funny that she announces the up coming forum in her current forum today. The new forum is going to focus a little more on products. Yes, Virginia, a board cannot run on love alone, it needs advertisers. The naivety of people constantly astounds me.

^^^^^^^^^
If a scrapper is able to install and use scripts, actions and the like, shouldn't they be able to use a bevel? or floodfill a pattern? Sure, if ANYONE is willing to pay $2 for someone else to add a bevel, good for the designer, but if the designer is only able to make that kind of tool, something that 90% of the program users can do (maybe better), then, maybe that designer should reconsider designing. And i always wonder how come store owners won't be any pickier about what goes in their store. It baffles me.

Anonymous said...

I agree on the OP of the Scrapmatters contest - They all look alike and the colors, well, suffice it to say I didn't download one of them and I can usually find something I really want in any given freebie. :) I think they are all just perfect for Scrapmatters, the store, though. It seems there are only a few designers there who aren't interchangeable. And it's not that I don't like it, because I do. But I already have 100s and 100s of kits that look just like them

Anonymous said...

True Blue is now selling at SM. What happened to SBG?

Anonymous said...

True Blue's store mysteriously closed a long time ago at SBG.

So I thought I would check out SBB today since I haven't been over there in ages. I checked out the sale section in the forum and I literally got confused thinking I was at Gotta Pixel! So many announcements are from GP designers!

So I had to look at the store listings.

SBB and GP have 25 designers listed and 9 of them are also at both stores! Which seems really high, but then you look at the 25 active designers at SBB, a handful haven't released anything new in months which leaves half of their active store also at GP. Half! Even SBB's packaging is brown and very similar to GP!

I just have to laugh because Amy is just running that store into the ground. A slow, painful death. There aren't different designers out there???

It's really no wonder more and more stores are going exclusive when you see nonsense like that.

Anonymous said...

So I thought I would check out Walmart today since I haven't been over there in ages. I checked out the produce section in the forum and I literally got confused thinking I was at Safeway! So many of the vegetables are also available at Safeway!

So I had to look at all the products in the store.

Walmart and Safeway have several thousand products and several thousand of of them are also at both stores! Which seems really high, but then you look at the products that come fresh every day, a handful don't which leaves half of their best selling products also available at Safeway. Half! Even Walmart's packaging is white plastic bags with their logo, very similar to Safeway!

I just have to laugh because the owners of Walmart are just running that store into the ground. A slow, painful death. There isn't different produce out there???

It's really no wonder more and more stores are going exclusive when you see nonsense like that.

Anonymous said...

Digital scrapbooking has how many thousands of customers and mass retail has how many millions if not billions?

lol While creative, comparing digital scrapbooking to mass retail is really like comparing apples and oranges, but you did actually prove my point.

Safeway and Wal-mart exist because there are tons of customers. But, even Wal-mart is suffering due to over expansion and trying to carry items people could easily buy at Target.

Just do a google search on how Wal-mart alienates and confuses its customers over the years by offering products they can buy elsewhere.

You'll find that while produce is fairly interchangeable, most everything else is not. Digital scrapbooking is hardly a necessity like food. Why would anyone shop at a store that looks the same as another?

Being exclusive doesn't work if your customer service sucks.

Elemental Scraps - went exclusive, then closed

SUN - went exclusive, and quietly un-went exclusive recently

Funky Playgroun - also quietly went un-exclusive recently

People are confused and alienated by Walmart because their customer service SUCKS big time. There are hordes of people running around in blue vests but no one actually helps you - and if you can flag one down to help, chances are they have no idea the answer to your question. People can't find what they are looking for and people also respond to the total disregard for the customers.

While yes, food is a necessity and digital scrapbooking is not - the proof shows again and again - people buy an experience, not a product.

Experience - what kind of service you get, a feeling of being known, or maybe you feel like you are 'cool' or in an 'exclusive group' when you buy there (which is why I think SBG does so well, since there actual product isn't much different than anywhere else).

Before you all pipe up to saw you buy for quality alone - I know there are loads of people who do NOT buy for the experience - but the bulk of buyers do.

Must be nice for you living with your head in the sand unaware there are people going through things like this. Continue enjoying life through your rose-colored glasses. It's people like you that choose to look the other way when someone is being beaten or something and you do nothing to try and help. Personally, I'm ready to hop right on in and help in any way that I can and I hope if I'm ever in a difficult situation there will be someone there for me.
-----------------------------
Why in the world would you think that someone who doesn't know anyone in this type of situation is someone who would look the other way when someone is being beaten?

I've never known anyone in Liz's situation. I live in a different world. That is not to say if I was present when someone was being hurt I wouldn't do anything in my power to help.

First person that popped in my head is Amanda Dykan. Her last personality was a best friend from school or something. She's completely insane so I would not put it past her to try again.
-------------------------------
What is so weird is that I thought about her this morning. Like so many other designers, she went into photography and we never heard from her again. For some reason she popped into my head this morning and then I saw this. Make you kinda go hmmmmm.....

Anonymous said...

Y'all are really crazy, you know that? I dislike the shenanigans Amanda Dykan pulled as much as the next gal, but honestly! The horse is not only dead, its bludgeoned, bloodied and almost unrecognizable at this point.

If she was going to come back, it would be as a designer, not some beginner scrapbooker. Every time you bring her up, it just helps her gain more notoriety and publicity. Why would you want to do that? Age old wisdom: let sleeping dogs lie.

Ya gotta feel sorry for Amanda. Seems she doesn't really change after all. Not a very good review on her photog business. I always felt she over inflated her digi scrapbook business too. Made it sound like she was a big deal with other people working for her. She may be a whack job but she does a pretty good job at selling herself. She just doesn't know how to do the follow through. Maybe she should have pursued a degree in marketing instead. She may have been successful in that arena.

My guess would be that someone who is flat broke can't afford birth control either. Not all states have programs to pay for birth control. I'm not sure about you but I've been in a position where I couldn't spare $50 for birth control. Granted they could pick up some condoms for a couple of bucks but we don't know that they didn't.

speaking of Royanna - there is a thread in the DRC about recieving unsolicited newsletters. A shop that Royanna is selling at - DeliciousScrap is the one sending out the NL's. Its owned by ScrapALatte, who happens to sell at Divine, and claims to co-own 6-8other scrap shops.

Tiffikat started the thread, as she recieved an unsolicited NL from this shop. More and more designers chimed in, saying the same. They all knew it was the same shop when yet a 2nd NL came in emails a few hours later.

Royanna comes in to post (and RARELY does she post in the DCR) that its a BIG NO NO to do this..and would NEVER think of sharing or selling email lists. Hmmmmmmmm. She sells at this shop...and the owner sells at Divine. Hmmmmmmmm.

Kimeric posts that Royanna should go inquire at the shop she is selling at as to what is going on, rather than just post what a big no-no it is...and apologizes for "sounding snarky, but geez louise" ( I love how she wrote that). Tiffi agrees with Kim.

Royanna posts back that she has contacted the management. Soon enough, ScrapALatte starts posting that its an innocent mistake...somehow she combined lists...etc etc etc...saying that she somehow pulled emails off a list of designer's she has purchased from...and now considers the matter of this issue closed. oh...and STOP PICKING ON ROYANNA!

again...HMMMMMMM. No one had 'picked on poor Royanna" at that point. Rita (Blue Flower Art) posts back, stating that ScrapALatte has never purchased a thing from her or vice versa..and doesn't believe her story. Neither do the others that post.

Poor Royanna posts again, whining that her name is being dragged thru the mud. What mud? She says Kimeric WAS a bit 'snarky'. oh man. Someone has balls enough to say what everyone else is thinking...and Royanna whines. ScrapALatte is whining because this is making her new shop look bad. Perhaps they shouldn't have illegally grabbed all those emails and sent out their newsletter!

Hats off to Tiffikat, Kimeric, Rita and a few others for having the balls to call the kettle black. and Royanna - if you are reading this - get a life. grow up. get real.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I probably don't shop at any of them anyway, be for certain that this chick never sees a dime of my business.

Doesn't she have anything better to do in her life?

Anonymous said...

The point of Tiff's post is that she was sent a newsletter that she hadn't subscribed to. Seems that DOZENS of designers and non designers recieved the NL...and the 2nd one that came after it. Whats the big deal? For one thing...its illegal to share mailing lists. If none of these people signed up for the newsletter, the owners are pulling emails outta their collective asses for all I know - - but people - including ME - want to know where in the hell they got our addy's from.

Some of the emails that were sent went to non business email accounts, or accounts that haven't been used for years. The only common thread with all this is that this ScrapALatte(SD site owner) is a designer at DD....Royanna is a designer at SD(the shop in question) - - and about half of the people recieving this newsletter admit to doing business at DD before. Royanna says she would "swear in court" that she did not share her customer email list. ScrapALatte made a lame excuse, said she considers the problem solved and closed, and won't fess up to what she has done.

Sorry if it doesn't bother you - but I do NOT appreciate someone stealing/sharing email addy's to try to jump start their business. In this case - its backfired on this idiot pretty darn fast.

Anonymous said...

Really? Under what name? I went to the Scrap Delicious store, didn't see the name of Royanna anywhere in the store, so, what name is she selling under at that store?

In the thread Royanna states that she asked to me removed from the store as a designer. So, that explains why she is not listed there now.

I received the two newsletters as well...the only link is a purchase at Divine (Royanna's) a couple of years ago. I immediately unsubscribed because I knew I didn't sign up for it.

glad it doesn't bother you. it does bother me, as it is illegal to do what this 'owner' has done. I, along with many others simply want to know where ScrapDelicious got our emails from. It isn't like snail mail at all. This is something you are supposed to 'subscribe' to - ASK for. and YOU give your information in order to recieve that subscription. NONE of these people GAVE their information. we simply want to know how she got it/who she stole it from.

Anonymous said...

I got both newsletters, and I've never bought anything from Royanna.

The 2nd newsletter said:

Join the current team of Delicious Designers at the sweetest shoppe on the net!
ScrapALatte Designs, Tallula Moon Designs, Studio RA, DesignZ by DeDe, and Simple Girl Scraps

I've never bought anything from any of those designers. So, not sure how they harvested my email.

Anonymous said...

Since Divine Digital has been mentioned as a common denominator to MOST of those who received the NL and since Royanna claims that she never ever shared list, i wonder if the emails were not harvested from a list of recipients of an email sent by or through DD, whether by Royanna (as owner or designer) or someone else from DD. Sometimes, ads may be sent and the recipients' email addies are NOT hidden. Very bad practice and emails can be harvested this way, while the "originator" might have absolutely no idea.

I am not saying Royanna is involved or not, but there are other means a large number of emails can be harvested.

If anybody is actually waiting for 4-shared, let me direct you to "skip screen". You just click and move on (in a blog train situation) Whenthe 5 minute wait is over you get a pop up with your regular File Save screen.

Somebody on that blog train had a "fan me on facebook and it won't show up in your wall or homepage" or whatever. That was a good move to describe it that way, or set it up that way, or whatever she did, and I fanned her.

I am opting out of newsletters and disengaging google reader for people who have 2 separate freebies. I figure it's only a matter of time before they let their newsletters and blogs die a slow death, so why bother? I have been buying everything I see lately, so this will just save me money. I probably just outted myself since it's been a wholesale unsubscribe this week.

Anonymous said...

Ok this post has vanished so i am reposting it.

Why blame Trish for the content of the blog train? Color palettes are a matter of taste and opinion. Not every kit has to have pinks, and pastels. Although she is coordinating it, do you expect her to pick and choose which designer should or should not participate? and then QC each element one by one for you?

Just like for any other freebie you can find on the net, it is up to you to decide if it suits your taste or not. YOU choose if you want to download it or not. YOU choose if you want to keep it or not. With 100 kits to choose from, in the same palette, nobody will twist your arm to download and keep them all. You like it? fine. You dont like it? get off the train. Afterall, the ride was free.

Anonymous said...

^^^^^
I agree. Some people here (or maybe just one person?) are always being snobbish about blog trains and freebies in general. There are two shops with that attitude (and I haven't shopped there for ages because of that). I think blog trains are a great way to advertise yourself if you're a designer, or find new designers in the ocean of digiscrap.
Not always the colors are of my taste, but this is just my personal opinion, others may like them.

Anonymous said...

If you don't like the colors, you might be able to recolor the papers and some elements too!

Anonymous said...

I don't blame Trish for the content of designer minis, obviously. But she has to be held responsible for her constant awful color and theme selection. And who said anything about pinks and pastels? That was totally random.

Anonymous said...

Color choices are very subjective. What you find to be a good palette, might not appeal to me. And vice versa. Same for themes (and I am darn glad I am not the one picking theme!)

Anonymous said...

the theme for this blogtrain was brought up after the last blogtrain....when the mini's showed up almost immediately on pirating sites. The theme was supposed to be "ninja's vs. pirates" - that is weird - but since pretty much everyone went with pirates - the ninja part got lost. The colors....well....for a pirate kit, they aren't a bad choice. Trish simply went with the suggestions.

Hmm, 'kay, that's the word I thought you meant.
____________________________________
I’m sorry to disappoint the vocabulary police but I knew exactly what the word insular meant and it perfectly describes what I think of Tiffikat and her ilk.

Insular: characteristic of an isolated people; especially: being, having, or reflecting a narrow provincial viewpoint

They live in their little back-water DST world making a big-deal over a minor matter without any regard to the realities of the real-world where people are inundated with unsolicited marketing constantly; on the TV, radio, movie theaters, mailbox, marketing phone calls etc. And yet because of their provincial viewpoint the issue of one unwanted email in their in-box becomes a matter that warrants posts in both the Hot Topics forum as well as the designer forum. What’s more, she mis-states or mis-understands CAN-SPAM Act. In fact you might even say she lives on an “island” of ignorance.

But if you want to continue to point out the “errors” in my word-choices go right ahead; it only servers to illustrate your lack of intelligence, not mine.

and yes I am aware that the previous post has a typo..."servers" should read "serves"

Isn't this issue similar to the copyright issue? There are laws, and everyone should follow them, whether it is about one single unsolicited email, or one copy of a Disney character. Does it matter if it is only once or 10 times? just DON'T DO IT.

Do you even know what the Can-spam Act says? There is no requirement that a customer has to request to be put on an email list. The only requirement is that there is an opt-out button. The speculation that the emails were obtained "illegally" is just that...speculation.

Tiffikat and others have confused "best business practices" with law.

I was the original OP on the blog train for this month.

While I can appreciate their fury over their kits and hard work being stolen; the whole concept of pirates on every item is totally self-indulgent. Some of the papers were actually watermarked with pirates.

The palette is what the individual designer makes of it, and is less of a concern to me. Probably because even kits I think will match a photo never do, so I've had to learn to be a recolorist from the very beginning.

I ended up with a small vintage or even heritage kit out of the train. I noticed it is awfully dull & beige when all was said and done.

Some things from these 3, which I considered the best of the train:
Kate's Digital Designs
Jen Reed
Digilicious Scraps
Plus one thing from the following:
JWDS - sorry all I have is the file name and they only put these letters for their designer name
KK - sorry all I have is the file name and they only put these letters for their designer name
Plain Papers from Brine Design
Black Lace and a funky frame from Blue Flower Art
a beaded ribbon from Albums to remember (with the word Pirates blacked out by me using her black paper)
beaded frame & matching frame from Anelia - to be put together.
Misty O'brien really nice multicolored paint smear
Moon Designs ribbon tag - not that great on its own, but I thought there were other things in there I'd like, but I didn't keep them afterall

I didn't download everything; I just watched the slideshow on "slow" to do my choosing.

I love this rant on Blue Flower Art's portion of the blog train: "Last time I ran a freebie with the Blog Train Blog some of you complained about Pay with a Tweet or Facebook even though it was a direct download with two clicks and I had to pull out from the blog train. Because of these complaints, not only did well over 2,500 ladies miss out on the freebie, but I’ve also gone back to 4shared and the long delays you’ll experience. If you did miss out, you can find it on my facebook fan page."

I don't use Twitter and don't like Facebook. Thanks for making me feel the bad guy and for punishing me by putting your portion on 4shared. I'm on to the next stop and won't bother with your stuff anymore.

Rita is a fucking bitch. Everything she says comes off as bitchy and stuck up.

I went back to read the first posts. Tiffikat doesn't say anything about it being illegal or a law. She does say unethical. I didn't read every page of the DCR post though so maybe it is later in the thread.

For sure it was posted above here, though.

Stuck up? Yeah, you would use that phrase, seeing as your vocab is that of a teenager. I'm impressed that even her product announcements come of as bitchy and 'stuck up'.

I wonder if Miki is moving too. It's okay because I'll follow her. It's been a while since I bought anything from Miki but I stumbled on the guest gig at SBG & have bought all but one kit. It's on my wish list right now so I hope it stays there.

I bought 3 of her SBG kits too, I really loved what she put in her store there. It's not that I don't like what she's got at SBE, but I find I rarely browse there anymore. I think she really outdid herself with her guest offerings and I'd like to see her at SBG.

Really? Who the hell cares how I said it? I say stuck up, they say "holier than thou" or "better than everyone". WHO CARES? I guess you were bored and just needed something to say.

Much like you, right?

I think they are all idiotic expressions and shouldn't be said by a grown up.
