Changing Seasons

Hold on to your hats, we are moving into Autumn. Good bye beach kits. Hello leaves, Halloween and Christmas.
I must say I have been pleased lately with the variety of non-seasonal kits (birthday, outdoors etc.), and multi purpose kits being released. It feels like even though kit prices have gone up I can get multiple pages from the same kit, and because of the variety (extractions, doodles) in that kit, the pages have a completely different feel.

What "trend" are you loving these days?
What "trend" is going to pass you by?
Amy Martin has won two big (traditionally paper) scrapping contests this year. Do you think this will help bring newbies over to digital?
Have you entered any scrap contests outside of the Digi community?

Lets try to keep the pirate talk to the blogs devoted to the topic. (Just a request, but as always discuss what you want.)

I must be under a rock because I'm not really aware of any major 'trends' at the moment. But I really only buy from my go-to designers, the ones whose stuff I love, and they seem to be pretty consistent in the kind of things they do, not really trend led.

But I am preparing to dive for cover next week, the fall kits will arrive en masse and then we're into the theme season again. I'm not a big fan of themes.

I have to say I haven't really purchased much of anything lately as all the things within my budget look the same. I've been adding to my Kaboodle list for Digital Scrapbooking Day in November and watching sales in the meantime as well though for those things that are more expensive but unique.

Anonymous said...

I'm also glad that there more 'everyday' kits. Living on the other side of the world, the seasonal kits always come out at the wrong time of the year for me, unless it's Christmas or Easter.

I've been buying from Shabby Pickle, mostly Kasia, Jofia and Holly. I picked up their Pickle Barrel and there are some designers I just wouldn't buy from and a few that I'm willing to try out. I also purchase from Tracy Ann, Sausan Designs, WAS (on sale), and a few others.

Amy Martin sure is a better scrapper than she is a designer, no meaness intended.

Anonymous said...

Trend I love is where the scrapper works the photo and then uses that to scrap a page.
I don't care if they journal. That is their business.
I don't care if they repeat a photo 50 times. It's their page.
I don't care where they put their staples, brads or embellishments. Its their memory.
I do care about leaving a nice comment on a page that obviously took some amount of time to create and is eye catching.

I predict the next trend to hit digi kits will be "wordle's"

First designer I noticed was Julie Bullock at Shabby Pickle now
Chrissy at ES. Any others you can spot?

I first noticed these on the paper scrap smack blog several weeks ago.
Go to wordle.net

I'm a kiss-kinda girl so I don't follow trends, never have. I just buy what I like when I see it (very much an impulse buyer!) or if I'm working on a page and can't find anything in my stash that suits me I go looking.

I am loving the everyday kits but fall/autumn/Halloween kits are by far my weakness so I dread when they start coming out because I'm just a gal who can't say no!

Anonymous said...

I noticed in the gallery a lot of layered \stacked\ distressed papers. That looks like a "trend" to me. I will probably do one layout with this style and move on.

Anonymous said...

LOL on the Wordles. I don't know when Julie had hers at SP, but I noticed it in a grab bag at the beginning of August or near the end of July, I can't remember.

The Wordles aren't that different from the mats that have been out for some time. I think Birgit Kerr had word mats out months and months ago.

Anonymous said...

I've seen some 'wordle' type stuff in digi - interesting trend...

I don't do Halloween and am not much into season stuff so any obvious fall leafy theme or Halloween kit won't really do much for me.

I like the idea of sweater/corduroy/fuzzy warm materials in scrap kits though...

Those distressed photo overlays like Danielle/SomethingBlue Studios are all over the place and I predict someone will start doing bigger ones for papers (people are using hers and similar ones and blowing them up really big for the aged edge effect on papers...

Aja Abney at ScrapArtist already has some out. I think they're called 'torn and taped' or something. I've got 'em and I love 'em.

Anonymous said...

Actually, some of the ones by Danielle are done at 12x12 already - you get a mix in the packs.

Anonymous said...

Those distressed photo overlays have been around for years. I've picked them up free around the web, and that was 2 years ago.

Anonymous said...

I don't usually buy the overlays or brushes. I always check DeviantArt first. I can usually find what I'm looking for for free there.

And I can't see paying for the Wordles when you can go to the site and make your own for free too. I'd rather spend my money on things I can't make myself.

Anonymous said...

haha someone started this same thread at DST last night. Apparently she is planning on doing an article on Trends and needs material.

I am loving all the day to day stuff at SSD. School kits, potty training kits, lost teeth kits, etc.

I would love to see more like hair cut kits, going to church kits, fast food or restaurant themed kits.

Anonymous said...

I bought the potty training and teeth kits at SSD too, and agree, I need a haircut kit (boy and girl appropriate) and also terrible twos, because I am living that tantrum H*ll right now.
Most of my kid theme pages are with kits from SSD.

Anonymous said...

There's some good toddler and every day themed word art at Scrap Orchard.

---------------------------
My thoughts exactly!

I am so behind the times on trends. I have only just started deleting some kits from 2003/2004 finally accepting that they do not meet the quality of what is out there in todays world. Although I do keep some of the older papers because I can use them with overlays and blend modes. I just have a real hard time of letting go of things.

I see a lot of "fantasy" style layouts. Is that a trend? It isn't my style so I don't think I will do any like that.

I've been noticing layouts using graphic style combined with paper style. That interests me. Why limit ourselves with trying to make our layouts look like paper layouts? We have computers and I like the freedom to do things that paper scrapping can not provide.

Anonymous said...

While I can appreciate the skill to do these, putting wings and auras on my kids is not my style either.
It also bugs me when they use those distressed overlays and put a crease right through someones face.

First pimple kit?
First boobies kit?
First time you eat PB&J sandwich?

Amen! I'm so glad that I'm now seeing some LOs that have super big drop shadows, so things seem to float on the page. When it's done right, it looks great.

The person dissing the "first" themed kits, no need to be rude. If it's not your thing, just say so, no need for sarcasm. I don't like themed kits either as I can't see a use for most of them beyond one or two pages.

The thing is, from a designer's point of view, is that those kinds of kits don't sell all that well. The school ones do, but the rest of them aren't big sellers. With the amount of time and effort you put into a kit, you want it to sell more than a few times.

I prefer multi purpose kits; ones that I can mix and match. I love that I can make pages mixing stuff from several designers with completely different styles and it all comes together.

Katie the Scrapbook Lady has a set too. I don't know if she is big enough name for you though. Of course I'm not sure what "big" means in this world. It seems different for everyone.

Anonymous said...

As a designer i feel the same way as the above poster about theme kits - I spend a lot of time developing a product and if it's outdated in 2 weeks it's kind of a waste of energy....

Anonymous said...

I still hate layouts that are all about the element vomit.

I hate layouts with stolen Anne Geddes photos. Those annoy me.

I hate blatant pimping.

I love a good alpha.

I never buy themed kits.

I'm loving Kasia these days...a lot. I love Danielle's overlays too, the others are just posers, IMO.

I used to love Jofia, but her stuff is boring me lately.

And while I like Amy Martin's scrapping, I think she thinks she's all that now. Too bad nobody cares about those contests anymore.

Let's talk baby shower \ Internet etiquette.
Is it appropriate to post an open request for paypal donations from the digi community or should it be confined to the store she actually represents? Is any request for cash appropriate? Do people have baby showers for 3rd babies? Where is Ms. Manners when you need her?

Anonymous said...

I think the open request for gifts/donations is tacky, tacky, tacky. But since I have no intention of giving anything to her or any other anonymous online person, it really doesn't upset me.

Anonymous said...

That request is tacky! It should have been left exclusively at the store and community at Divine Digital. I don' see what's wrong with a baby shower for all your babies, doesn't matter what number you are at.

LOs with Anne Geddes photos? I've never seen any and I've been around for three years.

Anonymous said...

I think the open request was tacky. It should have stayed in store/community. I don't see a problem with a shower for a 3rd child. We all need diapers, formula, and onesies to replace the stained ones from previous kids. I went to a shower for a 3rd baby, but I bought the mom a spa basket for herself. She already had a boy and a girl, so she was pretty well set on the baby stuff.

Anonymous said...

I have been spending quite a bit of money at SSD lately (last several months). I just found Kasia Designs...and I've bought almost all of her stuff, but I haven't used any yet. I also love looking at the Lilypad gallery, and I love to spend money there too. Papers from Catrine, Creashens and Danielle's photo overlays. I'm not sure if any of this is trendy...but it is what looks good to me.

How about the winning layout for the Scrapper's Choice Awards? That baby was straight from the Anne Geddes website without permission. There have been threads on DST discussing AG photos being used inappropriately and without proper credit.

Designers I admire: Kasia, Shabby Pickle, Vera Lim, Aja Abney, Rachel Young, We Are Storytellers, Marci Reckinger (too pricy but great as a trendsetter).

With even the Lilypad, Funkyplayground and Scrapartist having dollar days I'm wondering if WAS will ever jump on the bandwagon - I wonder how their sales are given the relatively high prices...

So your child is missing and you're posting on-line? Priorities!!

Anonymous said...

I just opened up that thread - was typing a response...decided I best just say it here.

WTF kind of parent blogs online while their child is missing? I don't give a crap if it happened last year, I would have already called the police and filed her missing. I cannot believe this mother took time to not only post, but then to RESPOND to people writing...and no one responding seems to think its odd that she is in front of the computer instead of organizing a search for her kid.

Someone ought to smack you one Saxon. Hard. Upside the head to knock the parent gene back into the proper orbit.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, it would be so efficient to run around looking for your child, instead of staying at home and waiting for a phone call. It's not like she's run away or been kidnapped.

Sheesh. I wouldn't be running around being useless if it were my child. I'd be at home, waiting for news, no matter how hard that would be.

I didn't see that as I think the whole scrapers choice awards is bogus. It definitely sucks.

Are there any more LOs like this? I'd be interested to see them. You gave the impression of there being a lot more than one or two.

Just wanted to add, did anyone report to Shannon about that LO having a copyrighted image on it?

5:54pm - never said she should be running around "being useless" as you put it. Said she shouldn't be online. Cell phones - those are used regularly in society today. They can reach you even when you are out looking for your kid. Imagine that.

--------------------
I'm shocked that the overall winner of scrapper's choice used a copyrighted Anne Geddes photo. And it's not like the photo was a minor part of the page - the photo is what MAKES that page! I really don't think that layout should have been allowed to be entered, let alone win. This is why the paper magazines have rules in their contests that photographs must be your own.

Anonymous said...

Actually I read a post on the DCR that a scrapper had got permission to use Anne Geddes photos in her LO's. The stipulation, however, was that the image could not be altered in any way so someone tweaking the original would be in violation.

I don't get the whole 'kid getting on the wrong bus' thing. The kid is in FOURTH GRADE! Maybe the kid has a disability, and if she does than I completely apologize. But if she doesn't, she should be able to get on the right frickin' bus on her own! Everyone in that thread is yelling about how the teachers should make sure the kids get on the right busses, but that's bullshit. A fourth grader should be able to do that on their own...unless they have a disability, of course. I can see if this was the first time, since it is the beginning of the school year, but it happened THREE TIMES last year??? Third graders should also be able to get on the bus without a babysitter.

No way in HELL I would be on a DigiScrapping community forum if for one second I thought my daughter might be missing.
I'm sorry-Just imagine and thank GOD it wasn't true-what if she was kidnapped and she was just sitting around waiting-and posting at DST while precious seconds tick by.
I am an overprotective mom-I admit it-but I would have been FREAKING out...like FREAKING out. I would have been calling the school-the bus barn(our transportation is also contracted out to the lowest bidder-BUT they do have a phone and each bus has a cell phone-it would take a matter of minutes for them to locate a child.
I'm sorry it just looks bad for Saxon to be so flip about the entire situation-UNLESS-she posted after finding all this out without saying-just to get everyone outraged. Which if she did-It worked, because I think its pathetic.

Dude, I wasn't being sarcastic. I was being realistic. No parent I know would have been chatting with internet buddies if their child was missing. They would have had a police officer at the house within minutes, be in direct communication with the school authorities and anyone else involved with the responsibility of getting those children on a bus.

No. This parent is seemingly sitting on her ass waiting for everyone else to figure out where her child is and writing posts to DST. Am I really the one in the room that finds this appalling?

Anonymous said...

Sorry if you weren't being sarcastic.

But as I don't know the whole situation, and none of us do, it's easy for any of us to say do this do that. I doubt I'd be freaking out as I'm not an overprotective mother, but I would be worried, that's for sure. I'm glad my kid is close enough to school so that we can walk it.

I spend time my kid, but that doesn't mean she knows how to tie her own shoes. She does things in her own time and always has.

I spend lots of time with my children. From when they get up, to when they go to bed. I have spent lots of time working on shoe tying. I'm sure the other parents have too. Mine just doesn't get it yet. Possibly if you knew anything about the medical issues you were talking about instead of just spouting out your ass, that plenty of kids with these problems have issues doing things that require patience and fine motor skills.

Have you tried the 'bunny ear' trick? It is an easy way to teach kids to tie shoes!

yes, we've tried that, and lots of other ways, with every song/rhyme I've found, with rewards, with plain shoelaces attached to a box lid instead of the shoe. It's frustrating for both him and us. It's the only thing I've find that he can't do that he's tried to learn or we've tried to teach.

Hi Heather, good to see you.

I am trying to figure out why scrapbooking message boards have an oversaturated population of childeren that have been labeled with some sort of learning disability. And those that don't yet have a label, and find something their kids can't do, the mom is eager to tag them with something so they can explain it away. Leave the diagnosis to your family doctor, not your friends on the message board.

Ditto! Thank goodness there's velcro and slip ons, because as far as our guy has come being able to tie shoes is the one thing that he just cannot master. The brain and the hands just are not cooperating. The only restriction his school has on shoes is that they can't go out to recess if they're wearing crocs or open-toed shoes, otherwise there are no restrictions.

As far as "Miss Spend Time With Your Kids" did you bother reading the whole thread. Melany stated that her child already has some learning problems, so how the hell do you come to the conclusion that she doesn't spend time with her kid? Some people just need a good slap along the side the head, you're one of them.

If you were talking to me, I'm not Heather. I didn't even post in that thread, just followed it because I'm in the same situation.

-------------

They aren't oversaturated, it's just that those mothers seem to post about their kids because they have problems.

What I do see sometimes, and I've seen it twice already in this blog post, is people willing to label the average kid with something because they did something wrong or can't do something.

The fourth grader who got on the wrong bus, there must be something wrong with her (look at the posts), because she should be able to get on the right bus at that age. Maybe she just had a bad day and the read the number wrong. What about all the days she did get on the right bus? Hmmm? Did everyone conveniently forget about that?

It's people like that who are willing to label the normal kids, no their mothers.

-----------------------------------

Yes, but the mother said this also happened 3x last year. Sorry, but if your 3rd and 4th grader has this issues that often in a school year, there's something else going on. Yes, the teachers and bus drivers should make sure the kids are in the right places, but at that point, it's not entirely the school's fault. The kid is old enough to know which bus she rides and get on it consistently. If the kid doesn't have some sort of disability then she's just plain dumb. Yes, I said dumb. And there are dumb kids and adults out there. Darwin would have a field day with what's been posted on the scrapping boards lately.

Some scrappers were furious about the misuse of the images, especially in the contest, but were ignored. Obviously this is yet another example of the popular girls getting away with whatever they want.

I'm still really shocked that they allowed that layout to win the overall scrappers choice award. Anne Geddes is famous because of her one-of-a-kind photos, so it just doesn't seem fair for someone to win a scrapbooking competition using them. Had that layout used a more ordinary photo, it probably would not have won.

This is one example where the digital world should learn from the paper world. No way a paper magazine would select a winner using an Anne Geddes photo. No way.

Oh, I agree, but seriously, labeling a 8/9 year old as one. If she did it all the time, yeah, but three times in year doesn't make her dumb. Labeling her dumb doesn't look good for you, does it?

Has anyone in their complaints ever contacted the Anne Geddes website? Or is it just more hot air?

I agree that the LO shouldn't have won the scrappers choice award, but it's not upsetting me that much but some of you are really keyed up. If it bothers you that much, do something about it. Go to the Anne Geddes website, link up the LO and let them know and see what they say.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I could get on the right bus just fine when I was in 3rd and 4th grade tyvm. It's not like the busses change every day. You ride one bus to school and one bus home. It's not rocket science. A Kindergartener can tell you what bus they ride after the first couple weeks.

Anonymous said...

Some say that they have been given permission to do scrapbook layouts so I contacted the Anne Geddes website just so I would know for sure myself what their rules are. I have not heard back from them though.

Anonymous said...

Something sounds a little fishy about the child and the bus story. In all the years my kids went to school they never ended up on a wrong bus. Maybe once I could understand, but she said it happened three or four times. Kids know their schoolmates that ride the same bus with them and they know what bus number they ride on. It just doesn't seem likely that a child would be on the wrong bus three or four times.

Anonymous said...

Let me ask you this - have you ever forgotten your car or house keys? Have you not remembered where you parked? Has this happened to you more than a few times a year? Does this make you dumb? I doubt that it does, yet here you sit judging a 8/9 year old. That's just disgraceful.

Anonymous said...

I agree about the bus story. Something fishy. Kids that age know what bus they ride.

And for the Anne Geddes crap at DST......are you really surprised? An issue only gets addressed by Shannon when it's convenient for her, not when it's ethical. I didn't even bother with the Scrapper's Choice Awards because I knew the winners were already chosen before they were entered probably. DST will continue to be corrupt as long as the masses participate in their little games.

Anonymous said...

Um, hello people-if an 8/9 year old is having trouble finding the right bus, then the ADULTS are the dumb ones for not making sure she's on the right bus each day. And honestly, if her mother was really that worried about her child's safety, would she keep sending the child on the bus after so many mix ups?

Anonymous said...

Nope, not a bit.

Anonymous said...

Not so much smacking the 4th grader, but you do have to wonder about the adults around her if she has issues getting on the right bus at that age and they keep letting it happen. The whole situation is really odd.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't call four times 'letting it keep happening'. Maybe there are issues at home that are worrying her. Or maybe she doesn't like riding the bus, and this is her way of getting out of it. Considering that it never happened in earlier years at school, you have to wonder why now. Or at least I do.

Don't your kids forgot stuff when they don't want to do it, even though it's part of their daily routine? I know mine does.

I like the owls. The first one I saw was over at ScapGirls in September or something last year.

What I don't get is the holiday kits. How many Halloween and Christmas kits does a person really need? I have no Halloween kits but I do have three Christmas kits, all of which were CT ones and that was two years ago and I only got those as they weren't that Christmassy.

Anonymous said...

Well, I suppose every designer has the right to do her own holiday kit or two. Multiply that by the number of designers and you get a holiday kit tsunami. As more and more self-proclaimed designers push into the market, my weeding-out skills are getting better, too. I never give a kit a second look. If I don't like it at first glance I move on. Whoppido!

Anonymous said...

Definitely not worth it. If you're already a gold member, stay that way. The only difference between the two, other than the price, is that you can download over and over again, instead of just for that month.

And truthfully if I wasn't already a diamond member I'd have let my gold expire a long time ago. Nope, worst $100 I've ever spent.

Anonymous said...

I totally agree on the Diamond Membership. I didn't even download this September kit by Micheline, there is not one thing there that is new. A button, frame, ribbon, cardboard, back of an eyelet and some fall papers. Looks like a freebie hodge podge to me.

Anonymous said...

I let my Gold Membership lapse and had no regrets until Sausan/Sylvie's kit. That looked really interesting and different from the usual. Some of those kits look like the designer threw them together at the last minute. Considering that most of them would have had at least six months to do it in, you'd think they would do something better.

Why won't anyone buy my scraps? I have ALL the NEWEST CU tools and use them in ALL my kits! I have ALMOST ALL of the actions from Monica, Roseli., Thaty what's-her-name, Chloie Watkins, Atomic Cupcake, Cintiza Z, Tandika Starr, ActionFX, and MORE!! I have all the latest and best STYLES (AND I KNOW HOW to click a button and use them!!), overlays, and recolorable shit, and I even I have ALL of TheresK's overlays, and Amanda Rockwell's and about a dozen more people's overlays!! I put in all my kits the latest things that all the big designers do, just like them!! Birds and owls and sticks, twigs, leaves, berries, dead mouse-fur, rusty screws and stupid backward staples, grungy paper that looks like a tank drove over it, dirty diapers, strings and ropes and twine and hemp (even some marijuana leaves!!), dental floss and rubber bands, garbage-bag ties, clothespins, dirt, globs of glue, glitter, even a massive green booger!! I put at least a dozen beautiful bows in ALL my kits (one in EVERY COLOR!!!), using at least 2 different actions for them! And they are FANTASY bows you can tell because they look like they CAN'T BE REAL?? How come my fantasy stuff doesn't sell???? I use CU ribbons that you can TELL are REAL ribbons, because they are smashed up against the glass of the scanner, and STILL no one buys them! Now I even bought preview-packaging from a well-known designer, and my previews look just like the ones at Shabby Pickle, and STILL no one is buying my stuff! I even made my price exactly the same as theirs!!

It must be because I am just not part of the big clique. Those other designers who have been doing this longer look down on us newer and better designers, and they are just jealous of my talent, and how many actions and styles I know how to use, so they bad-mouth me because I'm newer than them and then people call me a "so-called" designer. WHAT'S THE MATTER, AM I CUTTING IN TO YOUR SALES??? LMAOooo!!

But WHY won't people BUY MY STUFF???????? You all are just SNOBS!! Just because my name isn't "Gina" or "Flergs" you all hate me! YOU ALL are stuck-up and YOU ALL SUCK!

And another thing, why won't any good stores take me??? It mus be becuz I don't have prefect speling! AS IF that makes any diferrents you damn gramar polic!! Go find someon els to pik on! Your just JEALUS!!

Oh yeah. As if all of that wasn't enough, NOW people are trying to follow me from store to store, accusing me of being a PIRATE just because I recolored something and sold it. I KNOW YOU ALL do that, so why can't I?? Damn double-standards and more cliques and snobs! I KNOW you all download stolen music, but you want to get on my ass because I snagged a few little shares last week! YOU probably didn't even pay for your photoshop!! You stole it just like the rest of us! You all make me SICKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!

Actually, the one substantial post I read of Jodi's was not a put down. Just an very open expression of her viewpoints.

Of course, there is the usual Rebublican spurting of "christian values" - that makes my skin shiver. I never have and never will understand why christian's think that their religious views should be important in the office of the president. We have so many other issues tearing this country apart than whether or not a woman should be able to choose to have an abortion, a gay couple to exchange legal vows or whether we should determine what constitutes a marriage. These truly should not be political issues - they are personal issues - to be handled personally with the freedoms delivered beneath our flag.

She talks a lot about choice, but again contradiction when allowing all citizens to have the same choices she as a white, heterosexual stay at home mom enjoys.

But, I was with her regarding immigration and welfare handouts. The immigration population - thanks to the lack of legal enforcement of both borders and businesses, has allowed our country to bend near breakting point beneath the weight of undocumented peoples using our healthcare, welfare and educational systems for free. Our own middle class society bears the brunt of this expense and we often watch as immigrants get the free healthcare and special programs, while many, many of our own citizens are told they don't qualify for the same aid afforded people from foreign countries.

The republican's have worn this country into the ground in 8 years. I can't imagine why we would want to bend over willingly and invite them in for another 4.f

Shortly before the last election, I was fortunate to be in Paris - found myself in a small cafe one evening and entered into an unforgettable conversation with a group of outspoken Frenchmen.

The takeaway is with me still. As Americans we are so fortunate to have some semblance of a voice left. These funny, irreverent and articulate men wanted me to explain why it is that with the size of the US, so few people actually take their vote and let their voices be heard. "You have the power to make change, but so many of your citizens do nothing but whine instead of act".

Their passion for the right to vote was inspiring and beyond the joy of being in Paris, hanging out and drinking great wine with a bunch of gorgeous guys, I flew home the next day renewed with patriotism.

These passionate exchanges happening out here are exciting. I am glad to see them and I don't care if this is a digiscrap forum or not. Speak up - who knows, maybe you will inspire someone to vote.

I have seen the posts that say "why are we debating, obviously those posting are not going to change anyone's opinion."

Look at the views those threads have, there are a ton of people that have not made up their minds, and as scary as it is, they are making up their minds based on the positions that are being expressed. They are stating their opinions, but most definitely there are others that will be persuaded if they are undecided.

It's the same in England, Canada, Australia, Germany, etc, etc. In fact, any country that is wealthier than the ones the immigrants come from. From my experience, it has zero to do with which political party actually gets into office, in the end, they are all the same, as we keep experiencing the same problems over and over and over.

I love how people blame the president in office at the time for the economy. Economies have natural highs and lows regardless of who's in office.

And for the Frenchmen who don't understand why American's don't vote, it's called the Electoral College. A lot of people don't feel their vote counts thanks to this antiquated system of choosing our president. I still vote just because I can.

I'm sick of the political threads as well (and must we go into that here???) No one really listens to what anyone else says, it just gets people upset, and designers/people in business alienate customers because they forget they're in "business" and spout off about extremely personal beliefs. Totally inappropriate and a recipe for disaster.

"In scientific usage, a theory does not mean an unsubstantiated guess or hunch, as it can in everyday speech. A theory is a logically self-consistent model or framework for describing the behavior of a related set of natural or social phenomena. It originates from or is supported by rigorous observations in the natural world, or by experimental evidence (see scientific method). In this sense, a theory is a systematic and formalized expression of all previous observations, and is predictive, logical, and testable. In principle, scientific theories are always tentative, and subject to corrections, inclusion in a yet wider theory, or succession. Commonly, many more specific hypotheses may be logically bound together by just one or two theories. As a rule for use of the term, theories tend to deal with much broader sets of universals than do hypotheses, which ordinarily deal with much more specific sets of phenomena or specific applications of a theory.

Of several competing theories, one theory may be superior to another in terms of its approximation of reality. Scientific tests of the quality of a theory include its conformity to known facts and its ability to generate hypotheses with outcomes that would predict further testable facts.

A difference in usage of the word "fact" contributes to confusion in regard to the meaning of "theory". An appreciation of the various meanings of "fact" and "knowledge" can help to clarify an understanding of the meanings of "theory". (See also: relativity of knowledge, under Relativism.)"

That being my belief, I'm not too concerned about what happens at the end because I know that I have lived my life to the fullest and also have been overall a kind and good person.

There is a reason that there is a complete separation between state and church in Europe (we do not count the Vatican here).
And that reason is history.
Every time the church gets involved in politics, shit hits the fan.
Religion should stay out of politics.
If you accept religion being a part of how the government runs, it is way too easy for some fanatic to twist things to their own advantage (think cult. like scientology.)
Kids should not be brainwashed into a religion in school.
Religion is a choice and should be made freely.

And I am so sick and tired of religious people forcing their choice of belief on other people, while expecting others to respect theirs and how dare they teach their children evolution theory in school!

What virtue is there in choosing to believe in something which defies all evidence and which is, to all rational people, utter nonsense? If that is not foolishness, I don't know what is. Similarly, I could CHOOSE to believe that giant invisible bunny rabbits live in my yard - but would that belief be smart? No - you would think I was crazy. It always amazes me why otherwise intelligent people CHOOSE to believe the most implausible rubbish.

i don't think your beliefs should be ridiculed. i believe in God. i strongly do. but i also strongly believe in scientific evidence and separation of state and church. i don't care if the president is an atheist as long as he (or she) can lead this country in the right direction. i want my children to have the best education, and yes the theory of "evolution" which is science based over the theory of creationalism which is religious-based. our education system is sadly falling behind. i am so sick of all these religious arguments. we need to figure out how to get out of this economic mess, raise the dollar again, fix the mess we got ourselves into in the middle east, focus on alternative fuel sources or drill here for the time being. why is the vote so focused on sex education (and abstinence only education does not work, none does really, but educating them is more important if you ask me), and yes, i still have a right to my opinion. i don't see how all of this BS focus is going to make this country a safer and stronger place for my children.

movefearlessly said...

4:51 - i wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. i don't like arguments, period. i believe that if people don't share ideas and opinions, we all remain ignorant. education is more than regurgitation of facts; you have to learn to discuss those facts and tolerantly entertain the ideas of others.

i simply think it's wrong to speak in generalizations and make fun of people who don't think the same way i do.

Yep, there certainly appears to be a a large percentage of religious crazies at DST, with the homeschooling bunch at the center of it.

Anonymous said...

OK subject change, what about Shannon using DST to pawn off the stuff her daughter is selling for school? AND, she's offering a drawing for a diamond membership based on how much you buy? I think that's a bit much.

Anonymous said...

It is her only way to get in good with the teachers since she can't wow them anymore with presents and treats. Talk about a helicopter parent.

Anonymous said...

On the subject of Helicopter Parents - Trina, anyone?? Damn, that woman annoys me. She posts constantly about her daughter and seems completely, unnaturally obsessed with her. She has even started a blog apparently about her daughter going off to college and as way to help her cope with the loss. God, get over yourself woman! Poor, poor kid. She must be totally suffocated by her mother.

Anonymous said...

I was considering the gold membership but went to look at the kit I can download. No way am I spending 25 bucks on it. Who knows what will be offered next. For a 100 bucks, I can buy some of the previous designers stuff, and a lot more kits. I need to get more for the membership than that!

What thread are you talking about?

The one about church and state. DST first page.

I simply can not believe all the lunatics at DST who want creationism to be taught in schools and claim that evolution is only a 'theory' ROFLMAO!! Just shows what a lifetime of religious brainwashing can do to a person. Quite sad really.
==================
I am a Christian, but I totally agree with this statement. The media has people so confused about science, religion and politics. For example, these are the ideas that really bug me:

-Who decided that Republicans are Christians, but Democrats are not?

-When did 'Creationism' become a Science instead of a belief system?

-When did 'Global Warming' become a religion and a political position INSTEAD of a science?

-What in the world is an 'Evolutionist'. The 'ist' implies that it's a belief system instead of a science.

-Who says that people who believe in evolution are atheists or agnostics?

I'm a very committed Christian who is voting Democratic this time around.

I just can't take anymore of the narrow-minded, self-centered attitudes that I see in this election coming from the far-right. When McCain supporters started chanting 'Drill Baby Drill' it sickened me. So narrow-minded and selfish.

I think the Democratic position is much more Christian-like than the Republican position. Do you think Jesus would trash the earth? Do you think Jesus would turn his back on gay people or poor people?

I agree that Palin has a good personality but, I could never vote for her based on her political views and her religious background. I've been to Assembly of God Churches (where they speak in tongues) and it's a very radical Church.

And one other thing, I'm in the very small income range that will be taxed HIGHER under Obama. And I don't care. I'm more concerned about the future of the USA and the whole planet than I do about my own pocketbook.

Anonymous said...

Precisely. I am not American but I think the very last thing the US need is another war-mongering, gung-ho president. I have been following the coverage of the American elections and quite frankly I see McCain as, potentially, an extremely dangerous man. I find his constant theme of "fighting" to be quite disturbing. I would have thought that anyone of reasonable intelligence could realise that this line of thinking has caused rather a lot of problems in recent years. But it seems many of his supporters are too parochial in their outlook to see that there are other ways of solving problems apart from invading other countries. I hope to god Obama wins.

Anonymous said...

But it seems many of his supporters are too parochial in their outlook to see that there are other ways of solving problems apart from invading other countries. I hope to god Obama wins.
---------------
Me too! One of the reasons that I have the views that I do is that I've moved around quite a bit, traveled a lot, and lived outside the USA for a time as well. I've been exposed to many different people and other cultures and I have a general openness toward other people - even if they are different than me.

It makes me so sick to think of them chanting 'Drill baby Drill'! One of these same right-wing radio hosts was talking about Obama saying that people in the USA can't just drive SUVs and use up all the worlds resources. And the right-wing radio host plays a tape with chanting that says 'YES WE CAN' 'YES WE CAN'. This attitude is embarrasing to me as an American. Just know that we aren't ALL like that!

Anonymous said...

I know you are not all like that! I have met many delightful Americans who are sophisticated and intelligent, many of whom are embarrassed by the attitudes of some of their countrymen. But you know, you will find ignorant people in all countries!

However, the way I see it from an outsider's point of view is that a sizeable percentage of Americans are not particularly cultured and are almost largely ignorant about world matters. (Please don't be offended!)I know every American is brought up from birth with the message that the USA is the greatest nation on earth and everyone else envies the American way of life. Most educated people will grow to learn a different way of thinking, but in this underclass of people where indoctrination is not tempered by education, there grows an underlying belief that anything foreign is inherently inferior, threatening, and therefore something to be suspicious of. This message is most definitely inculcated and nurtured by the media. I have certainly noticed a huge difference in the way news is reported in the US as opposed to other countries.

Anyway, my point is that this section of American society seems to gravitate towards McCain with his fight-to-the-death, defend-the-homeland-from-the-foreign-enemies attitudes. I don't know what the solution is. How do you get millions of people to take off the blinkers and take a global view rather than just caring about the patch of land where they happened to be born?

Very well said 9.36. There is a culture of fear in America, it's why they are the way they are, and it's deliberately nurtured by those it benefits most. Very sad that most of those unfortunate enough to be born in the USA can't see that. We have to make allowances for the ordinary American, they are not all the same as the lizards who govern them.

okay anonymous is looking for a subject change. I don't blame her; all the politics & religion talk is like watching a dog chase it's own tail.

so someone at DST is bringing up the people who post the same page in the same praise game multiple times.
I don't blame her-it is annoying. So just click the red X and go on. Whining about something happening in a GRATUITOUS thread-only leads to one thing. The gratuitous thread will be removed. Because what site admin wants to listen to it? (these complaining threads pop up every 2-3 wks.) You can't change it, it been happening for MONTHS.
The site (DST) tried to break up the game into 3 parts of the day to help this problem (although they said it was to relieve stress on the server) and then immed. failed to follow through. Now it is only 2 times a day thread game. I think they've done all they can really do.

Bottom line is that DST is an ADVERTISEMENT factory. Designers are there trying to sell you something. They hire CT to help them. And the RULES OF ENGAGEMENT of nearly every CT is to post in the game. Again, deal with it or click the red x.

On a side note, something I find funny is that every time there is a "who's your popular scrapper" the girls mentioned are usually those multiple praise thread posters. Usually using the designers "hot new product" . The same designers who usually have threads & give aways that are multiple pages long. They must be doing something right-advertisement wise. And it is a business = DST.
If you want a friendly rule abiding community go to your smaller site.

9:36:

Thank you for your point of view. You just totally pissed me off! You say you are on the outside but yet you claim to know what's going on in my country. I consider myself well educated, I have studied in Europe. While there, I have visited many European countries, have gotten to know many European cultures. Yet, not in my wildest dreams, would I make claims to know why people vote a certain way and I would most certainly not make this claim based on education.

Anonymous said...

I said I am not American. That does not mean I do not have a good idea of what is going on in the USA. I am sorry you are offended. I know I am generalising, but that is truly how I see things.

September 10, 2008 6:19 PM

The thing is, Obama is NOT Jesus. I'd rather keep more of my money and give it to the needy as I see fit. And that "very small income group" pretty much touches everybody making over $40K/year, including my retired parents living on a fixed income.

I don't like any of the candidates. I want smaller government. I want the government OUT of people's lives.

Anonymous said...

I want to government to stay out of my reproductive organs as well. (when it is their body and life at risk, they get to choose). Out of my blood (Drug testing for use not influence is a violation of privacy and unconsituti09nal under the 5th Amendment)). Out of my internet, iPod, cell phone, and laptop (all can be confiscated with NO suspicion of wrong-doing, searched and shared between government agencies under the Patriot Act and auspices of the Department of Homeland Security). Out of my bank account (more than 2 electronic transactions on a savings account in a month flags them as possibly suspicious under Patriot Act). Out of my telephone wires (Patriot Act allows for wire-tapping without warrant).

Yeah. The current government is doing such a STELLAR job staying out of our lives.

I don't know what's the solution, but I do know McCrazy ain't it.

You can pull up any exit poll from the last 30-40 years and you will see that it is actually the poor that vote democrat and the rich that vote republican. Now, I am not saying that rich equals well educated and poor equals poorly educated, but in most cases this holds true.

________________________________

I grew up in an Assembly of God Church and still prefer that church to any other church, other than speaking in Tongues there was nothing radical about it. Not that I think speaking in Tongues is radical. But other than that, it was like every other church that I have stepped foot in, minus Catholic Churches with the standing and kneeling and hail marys.

I don't know if it's the speaking in Tongues or the fact that most Assemblies of Gods are not quiet churches. People clap while they sing, they raise their hands in praise to the lord. I don't think any of that is radical.

I've been to Lutheran churches and nondenominationals with my parents while they were looking for another church that was closer after they moved and usually I walk out saying, that was really boring.

I'm assuming it's the excitement in the church you find radical?

My issues are not the ones everybody seems to care about around here. Abortion\Choice, sex Education and gay marraige are not polarizing issues for me. I have opinions on them but I don't dwell on them every single day.

I am in the target bracket for Obama's tax increases, I am a small business owner and will be affected by his proposals. I am also concerned about the war. I have lost a cousin there and my best friends husband is getting ready to deploy again. There is not a candidate I am aligned with.

Yes, I am aware that many wealthy people vote Republican, but I don't care if someone has had an Ivy League education - if they do not think for themselves, are insular and self-serving, then they are not well-educated in my opinion. Their expensive 'education' has been for nothing and they may as well have grown up in the ghetto. I see a lot of these types of people voting McCain.

Anonymous said...

From the 2006 exit polls:
VOTE BY INCOME TOTAL Democrat Republican
Less Than $100,000 (78%) 55% 43%
$100,000 or More (22%) 47% 52%
And the fact that people with higher incomes are more likely to vote Republican has been consistently true since 1972.

Well, I guess I am rather a well-to-do republican voter than a poor democratic voter. Frankly my dear, I don't give a hoot!
