Happy May Day!

Sorry, I was out of town and knew when I checked the blog today and saw that many comments something must be going down. I must admit I haven't read it all, but I skipped to the last page to read the ending. I kind of feel sorry for her, as she seems to play the victim card and blame others for the situations she creates or fabricates. I still have many questions...like who is the hat girl in the hotel? How is MB involved in this? Who leaked the first screen shot of the DST post?

Carry on...

I thought it was pretty funny too, and no, I'm not a designer. I think the poster was just trying to lighten the mood after all the draaaama of this week. I didn't see her/him post anything snarky about it. By the way it's not for sale, it's in the free section, maybe that's why. It will be interesting to see how many four legged birds start showing up in kits now. Perhaps she's started a new trend!

Anonymous said...

I'm hoping for a trend of no birds in kits soon.

A5 Drama = who gives a shit.

Anonymous said...

My kids are always fighting over who gets the drumstick, so to me the bird is pretty unique and very "useful", ROFLMBO. I can see a layout about that coming up!

Thanks for lightening the mood, I guess we all needed something like that. (No disrespect toward the designer because I can't draw stuff like that even if I tried. Kudos for being creative and steppin out of the box!)

Shocking revelation that Ali Edwards is full of herself.

I agree! No more butterflies, glitter flowers, swirly ribbons, owls, ladders, kits, balloons, cartoon characters, please!

So....if you could set a new trend, what would it be? I'm curious to see what the next hot item will be. Anything new and original out there?

Anonymous said...

I seriously doubt Ali Edwards took the time to look at her blog, let alone complain that it looked too much like hers. I think it's the A5 owners excuse to get rid of someone they saw as dead weight. I feel sorry for Ali for them blaming her for this, and sorry for Karla for them doing this to her. Especially when she's about to have babies.

Anonymous said...

I'm just tired of so many designers and store owners turning out to be crooks, or crazy, mean bitches.

Amy H. was one of the few that I thought stayed out of all the stink, and whose designs I really liked. I'm bummed to hear that she's just like so many others.

Anonymous said...

Without Karla's stuff, there's really nothing I want from A5.

If anyone's stuff looks "too similar" it's all the crap from their other designers.

.....................

See, I'm just the opposite. I admire people who can pull off the graphic look but I just can't get it right without looking pathetic. I think it's great others like that style and are good at it, so it's a big pity Karla won't be at A5 for you anymore. I bet she'll show up somewhere else even bigger and better where her style will be appreciated. She has a very loyal following who will follow her wherever she goes. This may just be the window of opportunity for her.

As for me, I lurve me some Catherine & lily, but that's just me. I think their stuff is unique and different from all the other cookie-cutter CU-plopping designers. But to each his own, I suppose...

Anonymous said...

from reading Karla's latest update, it seems that she spoke to Ali on the phone and Ali is denying ever complaining about Karla's designs or blog.

Sure does look like Amy could be in deep doo doo over this-and rightfully so!

Anonymous said...

I have to say, the bird was extremely odd. I don't know if it was smack block worthy, but odd all the same.

Goodness! It's a free CU item! There might be more mutant 4 legged birds out there!

So? What's your point exactly?
I still think it's creative.
It would fit well a fantasy kit.
I could probably use a photo of my kid's crafts which I don't really know what it is but as is mom, I love everything he makes. Smile!!

Their point is that they do not have a single creative thought in their small little minds. They feel better about their own insecurities making fun of someone else. I guarantee if this was some big name person it would fly off the shelves like hot cakes. Another thing, It seems to be freebie. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of this blog? Aren't you voicing your own opinion rather loudly? I really don't see anyone slamming the designer. Perhaps they were having a bit of fun, but I don't see anyone out to ruin her reputation. I think she's actually getting some nice free publicity (well at least I am one taking a look at her other designs now - haven't heard of her before someone pointed her out on this here blog). Honestly: I think you are way overreacting over a small trifle that is not going to make big waves in the scrap community. Lighten up a bit....sheesh.

Thank you for your input. So, I take it you're more of a 'traditional' scrapper and want to see more things you could use on a paper page? What kind of things? Can you be more specific? I am really trying to get a feel for what others are looking for---not everyone is into fantasy layouts or graphic art. Some just like to create scrapbook pages for their families.

Take a chill pill! No one slammed the designer. There's a big, big difference between slamming a designer and having a friendly laugh at a design. I'm sorry you were the fat kid in the playground. I never picked on you, I swear.

Anonymous said...

But why come on here and slam on the Designer?
------------------------

I find it ironic that in this whole conversation about the bird, you are the only one who is slamming anyone by calling us dumb bitches, small minded, insecure, and dumb shit asses. If you can't be more creative than this, keep your opinions to yourself.

May 10, 2009 8:29 AM
Professional stores usually keep everything active 30 days - 6 months (not visible in the store front), but for those customers who have previously purchased items. Believe it or not some customers do not download the product purchased right away. Not sure why. Or in case there is a problem with the download. For example, corrupt zip file.

Thanks. I guess I meant visible--Karla's kits are still visible.

I was wrong in my 1st post. She is visible in the store front. Maybe, they are waiting until after the next pay period. Many designers are let go or retire out after they get paid.

A5 hasn't looked good for some time! Little Miss Amy isn't as sweet as some thought...big shocker there! She is another soccer mom who puts on a happy face in the real world but is a sneaky, conniving bitch in the digi world...it is so much easier to be the complete opposite when you are sitting behind a computer screen. She needs to grow a backbone and stop blaming others for her crap. As for Karla...she is a great designer and she will become bigger than she ever was at A5...she should send them a thank you note in the end because this will get her more business. Good luck to her since she is having babies soon. And Amy needs to be bitch slapped for putting stress on someone who doesn't need it right now. What a selfish, self-righteous bitch!

Some do indeed look more amateurish than others, but there are some that I actually really like this time. Amy Stoffel's again, Flergs, Seni, Charlen49, lynzriches, Wild Dandelions, dolfinlurver and JulieMarie's (like her color choice). They did all seem to struggle a little and, unfortunately, because of the theme there's already been some repetition of elements, but I guess that's to be expected.

Anonymous said...

I did like most of the ones you pointed out, but I liked faith true's, it seemed clean and crisp to me..
I love the theme, for dates and way to put dates on a layout are a favorite of mine! this is a treasure trove of downloads for it!
some of the repetitive elements also give a good view of the repetitiveness in stores/studios/boutiques thruout digiland!
I didn't care for Amy's until I saw a few layouts done with it...great CT there!

I really like some of the kits this round. Nice colors and I love kits with date ellies in it.

Anonymous said...

That freaking bird is hysterical. Well it could be two birds standing together, and the one bird is like blocking the other...oh, freaking forget it ... that bird is whack!

Anonymous said...

I don't like Amy's kit. The embellishments are not good. The glare or shadow on them looks off. They're not plastic, but not paper - WTF are they? Too obscure for me.

I have yet to unzip anything yet, so I am just going by previews of the following:

I tend to favor the colors that are warm. Like Jady Day's Kit, but have yet to Download it. I do see the buttons looking flat on the flowers.

Like the flowers in Wild Dandelions (have not opened file yet).

Love the colors in JulieMarie's Kit.

Not a fan of Flergs or Faith True this week. The metal elements in Faith's kit look off and Flergs *yawn* boring and very scattered looking.

SYTYCD - I've only downloaded a few. Flergs looks it was thrown together in two seconds flat, she can do much better than that. Boring beyond belief, but I did like her kit last week. I can't believe she said she had no clue what 365 was when SBG had a huge promo and everything for it at the beginning of the year.

I liked Suzyscraps one, except for the two doodled kids. I just deleted those.

AnnaBV's was rockin' it.

Others I liked Amy Sumrall, Lyndsay, Simply Scraps, Designs by Jen, Redju, Maelia, Seni, Charlies Scraps, Whiimpy Chompers. Not the papers, I just downloaded the elements. I have more papers than I know what to do with already.

Anonymous said...

AnnaBVs really stands out! hers and Charlen49's have the same kinda theme, but original feeling. I actually liked the papers in both of those. Good depth and grungy feel.

OMG!!! I lost my Intuos3 pen and, after a week of searching everywhere, I decided to go to Best Buy tonight to get a replacement pen. Well, they don't sell individual pens at Best Buy and I could not believe it when I saw an "open item" special on their craft version Wacom Bamboo. I know, I know Amanda Dyk has her name attached to it, but apparently I can be bought and 50% off is my price.

Of course, I had to look at Amanda's book that comes with this package. I CANNOT BELIEVE WACOM ATTACHED THEIR NAME TO THIS WOMAN!!! It is worth finding a friend of a friend of a friend to borrow the book from to get a good laugh. I only made it through the first paragraph of Chapter One's Overview. The punctuation SUCKS!! It is so bad and distracting that I actually laughed out loud. Didn't ANYONE proof read it-- The publisher, Amanda's friends, Wacom????????? Here is the 1st paragraph EXACTLY as printed (except for the beginning and ending ", of course.):

"If you are a budding digital scrapbooker or graphic designer you, have no doubt heard of the computer accessory or should I say jewel, known as the Wacom Pen Tablet. For me, this tablet has become an extension of my design arm and I couldn't live without it. For a new designer or scrapbooker, though, you may be asking yourself about this new-fangled techno-gadget. The tablet is so much more than a "techno-gadget." It is a tool you will find to be priceless as you continue your journey throughout digital creation. "

Could the commas be more distracting or wrong????? WTH Wacom- what were you thinking? This is no way to bundle your wonderful product. The book is so inferior. Dump it!!!!!!

Now don't you Amanda fans (or should I say fan?) go pointing out my grammar and spelling errors. I am not selling a book!!! So, I, can, misplace all the, commas I want... and I cna mispel, whatever I wnat.,,, Amanda, take a grammar course, before, you make an even more bigger fool out of yourself. You just can't seem to get anything correct girl!!!!!

as far as the kits - lately the all seem like crap. fanatasy, real garbage. yuck.

Did I hit a nerve with a designer?

I'm not a designer nor do I play one on TV. Why would I waste my scrapping time making a kit? I'm not a SAHM with nothing better to do and all the time on my hands while my kids watch TV and I play on the internet all day long.

I haven't boughten a kit in over a year thanks to nothing "new" and gotta have it out there.

Did I hit a Nerve?? Also it sure does look like you have nothing better to do with your time then to sit here and complain like most here do. Oh and before you say ditto to me about doing the same believe me I have nothing better to do then to sit and watch people like you complain about the designs that are out there for sale. Maybe we should go out for coffee sometime.

----------

Geez, you're so jugemental. You have no clue about a designer's life. Some of us make this for a living. Our kids go to daycare or school and we work all day like any other person who goes to work, but instead of going to an office, we stay home and work on our own computer. I was not the OP, but yes, your comment hit a nerve with me.

Don't let her bother you. She is obviously a bitter person that has nothing better to do then sit in front of the pc while her kids watch tv all day. That is pretty evident beings she has time to come in here and shoot off her mouth.

Don't your kids go to school and don't you have night times? Don't your kids go to sleep? My kids go to school, so I have time during the day to sit in front of the computer. They sleep at night, because I have night times, so I can do some computer time then too. I'm so sorry that you don't have these privileges.

-------------------------------
Why on earth would you replace a pro level graphics tablet with a consumer level one???

Intuos 4 all the way for me! I have seen Amanda's book too I hope Wacom pull it soon.

Anonymous said...

Are the pens interchangeable? My dog chewed my son's pen so I replaced it. I paid like $100.00 for the tablet 2 years ago & I think the replacement pen was around $30.00
The PC Connection is where I bought the pen.
Is the pen & tablet the best way to do extractions? That's something I want to learn how to do this summer.

Recently I purchased some kits from some of this year's "hottest" designers. It's not that I deem them as such - but they are the creator of products that appear to be used in layouts everywhere. I am a designer and I wanted to see what they were providing and perhaps get to know my team mates a bit better. I was very surprised at what I found.

If one is a regular reader of this sometimes fun and always irreverent smacklicous blog, you could believe that "customers" only want kits filled with unique items - with absolutely no recolouring or duplication.

Well, the truth is - what is being scrapped with are kits that actually are the opposite. They are kits created for scrappers, not designers. And as such, the scrapper has the choice of shadowed items, multiple colors of the same papers, multiples of the same elements - in varying color and shadowed/or not.

I then went back to my ancient stash and picked some kits out from designers who had inspired me. I found the same thing to be true - they were designing for scrappers, not designers. I didn't have to recolor items because they included a full range of items in top quality.

All scrappers do not have the design mojo (or software programs) that we can easily assume they do. I think it does a disservice to both our ability to sell and the needs of the ordinary scrapper to assume that a kit filled with multiple colored papers and elements is not of value.

Anonymous said...

Can you recommend a good tablet for extractions? How much would I have to spend?

Anonymous said...

I'm actually doing a P365 project and the thing to keep in mind is that when you take a photo EVERY day for a whole year, you're going to have every color in the rainbow - including a mix of primary and pastels.

For that reason, the SYTYCD kits with restricted color schemes (ex. lavender) wouldn't work that well for P365. It's better to have large mixture of colors or else use neutrals. Neutral-colored elements work well because they work with ANY photo (Ex. notebook paper, wire, kraft & acrylic)

The kits that I think would work best for P365 are:

Jadydaystudios
BrandyDesigns
Amy Sumrall
Simply Scraps
Redju
Seni Designs
Charlie's Digiscrps
Scrap Kitten
Brynn Marie
Madame Wing

Some others have great elements though...even if the paper colors are too limited.

Anonymous said...

May 14, 2009 8:45 PM

-----------

The papers in most of the kits haven't grabbed me, so I've just downloaded the elements. I liked the idea of the designers doing a P365 kit but after downloading a few, there are only so many day, month and date elements you can use or even want. They are starting to blend together. The designers who are uploading late are really going to have bring it on.

Anonymous said...

Re the 365 kits, I agree with the previous posters about neutral kits - I am using Weeds and wildflowers for my 365 so have downloaded a few element kits are neutral or that seem to coordinate with those colours, that i may be able to use. Will be unzipping and sorting tonight i think! Am just downloading studio mgl's kit now - wow!

It is a shame for the new designers that they have to compete against established designers, as it makes a lot of their kits look less than impressive in comparison. But it is better they learn now before they try to sell such stuff to the unsuspecting digi-scrapper...

Anonymous said...

WTF? Just because a designer is established, doesn't mean they are good! This is just the silliest statement ever.

===========================
I tend to think it's the opposite. Just because a designer is not established does not mean they are not good. Many are good.

At the same time, most "established" designers are generally already good at what they do too, otherwise they wouldn't be established.

Anonymous said...

My thoughts... just because a designer is established does not mean they are good or bad. Good or bad are subjective the majority of the time so what I think is good others may think is bad. It also varies from kit to kit. For example I liked Faith True's kit for week 1 but others didn't. I would likely say it was good as it was one of the 15 kits I downloaded but someone else may feel it is bad.

Similarly to that just because a designer is new does not mean they are bad. Many of the new designers show a lot of talent and promise and although I've only downloaded about 15 kits each time I have discovered some new designers to scrap with.

Like I said it's all subjective though. I can guarantee that what one person loves another will hate.

I agree - mgl's kit is great for P365 - very nuetral and would go with ANY photos.

But even the ones with specific color schemes have some nice pieces - for example, Lyndsay Riches has nice kraft paper elements. And Ziska has a great template.

I'm guessing that all the complaining about the sutucs contest is from people that have only been in digi for a year or so? So many of these contests have been rigged/cherry picked for so long that I don't even pay attention to them anymore. It's a shame some of these stores keep suckering people into all the 'contests.'

I hope that no one who's complaining about the sutucs is going to come whining about the Scrapper's Choice Awards at DST either. Newsflash: only a few "big name" favorites or clique members win those either. It's been that way since year 1. Just think of them as another form of gallery standouts.

Anonymous said...

Not new to digi at all or to the contests, just didn't think they were so poorly executed before - or rigged like this one. Like I had said, I love my pages I made as the result of the challenges so guess I should be happy with that.

Anonymous said...

I'm guessing a lot of the poor execution is due to Laura D. running at least part of the show. The woman is borderline illiterate, and doesn't seem to be anywhere near one of the brightest bulbs in the box.

I've tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, but after she kept the LilyAnne kits up so much longer than the other stores, I just can't bring myself to cut her much more slack. I'm done with the pickle.

My thoughts on SUTUCS, I entered but dropped out because the flakiness of the whole thing. If you are running a contest keep to deadlines, if you absolutely can't keep people informed and make sure your galleries are capable. I thought the prompts were lame and not well explained. The judging criteria was never explained. I thought the kits offered would be a bonus to the contest but after the first week I never purchased another. Who wants six kits in the same color pallette? For $30 I can get more variety somewhere else.
I don't think any of the shop CT's should have been allowed to enter since some of the designers were also judges. I thought the whole thing was poorly run and that frustrated me to no end. The contest ended about 10 days ago and still no announcement or even a date of an announcement!

I have to say I am disappointed. We know Kami and friends read this blog. So some of us were hoping they would rise above the popularity contest mentality, and actually pick some talented newbies. Instead, they went with their friends and designers everyone has already heard of.

They are all COOKIE CUTTERS, one starts a trend, they all pick up on it. Give me that off the wall stuff anyday. I am so sick of it, I am not doing as much shopping.

I dunno, just looked through the list over at DSA and it seems pretty much inline with what I had thought. But then again this stuff is pretty subjective and not everyone likes the same stuff.

Since you're calling out Faith True and Flergs, who do you think specifically that got cut was better than them? I'm just not really seeing it.

Well, first and foremost, last time I checked I was allowed to have an opinion without having to justify myself to the likes of you. With that said some I liked made it but there were a few that I think should have made it...Suzy Q, Graham Like the Cracker, Laura Bozeman, etc. Like I said I can have my own opinion I don't owe YOU anything.

Wow, there is an awful lot of hostility out there about SYTYCD. No disrespect to those who got cut, but the bottom line is some of the 'old guard' designers you're bitching about are popular because *gasp* a lot of people like their stuff (including me) and they do good, quality work. So whining about how it's 'rigged' or whatever is just stupid and lame. If you want to contend that the people you keep complaining about shouldn't have entered in the first place, that's a somewhat more valid criticsm, although why shouldn't they enter? Free advertising for a year would seem like a powerful incentive if I were a designer.

Well, *GASP* guess what I really don't give a rat's ass what you like now how about that! It's people like you who think they are so high and mighty and better than everyone that makes me sick! Go back to being a kiss ass because I am sure you are awesome at that!

Geez, you're awfully hostile. I wasn't saying you owed me anything, just stating MY opinion that while maybe I didn't think that Flergs or Faith True had the best design this week, they certainly shouldn't have been cut, either.

As I said before, evalution of any artform is entirely subjective. One man's trash is another man's treasure and all that, so you're certainly entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine. Mine just happens to be that they should not have cut Flergs and Faith True (since you mentioned them initially) in favor of Graham Like a Cracker, Suzy Q. or Laura Bozeman which seems to be what you're implying.

Not hostile just showing you that I can act like you! I have to agree with the above poster yet another brown noser coming out of the woodworks. What's new...you all should start a brown noser group...maybe on yahoo...or even a blog.

Better than everyone? High and mighty? WTF is that even supposed to mean? How exactly do you derive that from my post? Is it because my vocabulary is to variegated for your clearly meager intelligence to comprehend?

I feel like I'm arguing with an illiterate teenager or something.

Next you'll probably try to explain yourself with the 'I'm rubber and you're glue' defense...

I just looked through them all, I hadn;t really followed it before. The only one I thought maybe should have been in there was SuzyQ but her's didn't really hit the 365 theme. I thought it was acute kit though.

LOL it is people like you who get all riled up and defensive that look utterly STUPID and make my day because I just laugh at your ignorance and simplicity.

Children! Go to your rooms, and don't come out until you can be civil to each other. (tic)

But seriously, why let all the stupid contests get to you? If all the sheoples would quit paying attention to them, they might go away.

My attitude is that we all have our own opinions, and, as I've very clearly stated, I don't think Flergs and Faith should have been eliminated this week, while you seem to think they should have. Correct?

Oh, and thanks for confirming my rubber and glue hypothesis @1:43. Trust me, you don't find this nearly as amusing as I do.

I am not the one that posted originally so ummmm yea you got the wrong one b*tch! But that is like you to assume! Thanks for the entertainment and making me laugh I can see the steam rising from you all the way over here. As for your lame reference to rubber and glue seems to me someone should do their homework and come up with something just a little less lame. Awwww, so sorry someone struck a nerve with you sweetie. Here is a tissue so you can dry your little tears!

The funniest part is this is probably Flergs or Faith or one of their CT members...ROFLMAO!!

Anonymous said...

Nope, not any of those people. I'm actually Amanda Dykan. Or maybe I'm Paula Phillps. Or maybe I'm the same person posting all of these and am just talking to myself ;-)

Anonymous said...

Probably the latter one!!!!

Why are you all so bitchy about this contest? Seriously! You can still buy from the designers who got cut just at a different store. It's been good exposure for them to give out the freebies. Someone has to lose or it isn't a contest.

Sounds to me like someone had sour grapes for lunch. I agree with the list that was released. The kits that were cut were either filled with obvious CU crap or lacked quality or both.
