Thanks for that, blog owner.

Anyone spot any good sales yet?

Anonymous said...

Flergs guesting at Scrap Matters - did anyone see that coming?

Anonymous said...

It's going to be a big sales weekend...how can I tell? Most of the scrap sites are loading very slowly - lots of lookers, and probably lots of downloading going on. :))))

If you're a designer, you might consider leaving your sale up a little while after the posted closing date.

Any big DSD letdowns so far?

Anonymous said...

i just grabbed what looks like a pretty good deal. never bought from bekah at scrappity doo dah, before, I'm downloading now. a grab bag with 13 pretty darn good looking packs in it for $5. i love the ricrak....there are some pretty good looking overlays in it, too....like 5 packs. any one wants me to post on the quality when i'm done downloading it, let me know. other than that....i haven't seen anything i've been tempted to buy yet.

Anonymous said...

guess I'm the only one up. but...the quality of this grab bag is excellent. a good buy.

Anonymous said...

Since it is good, would you mind linking us?

Anonymous said...

and yes, its really good. nice ribbons, i'm loving the ricrak pack...the roses are nice..and the overlays are great.

and to the person who wanted 75% off...if you like fantasy stuff...starlight designs at shabby pickle is selling kits AND CU stuff for 65 cents.

Anonymous said...

Oh goodie, another f**in' Disney themed kit complete with mouse ears. When are designers going to learn?

How much more frugal can you get than stealing someone's designs (KimB's) and calling them your own?

Anonymous said...

I certainly don't expect 75% off for iDSD, but 20% is not exactly going to make me run to shop.

Anonymous said...

Here is a note for DSD and ALL promotions:

http://www.yourlegalcorner.com/article.asp?Cat=Internet%20Alert&ID=27

Any designer and any site that allows advertising of a spend x amount of dollars in my store and be entered to win "blah" will be reported to the FTC and State Attorney General.

These are clearly illegal lotteries and I'm sick and tired of seeing them.

Also, any designer who feels their business has suffered due to these illegal promotions can also file a complaint.

It is free to file a complaint and there is no need to consult with a lawyer beforehand.

Ignorance is no excuse.

LOL seriously, only 20%?! Not worth the time to change the code for the store shopping cart.

Not everyone is American or cares about the FTC and State Attorney General, they have NO jurisdiction over me.

------------------------

If you are international, you must comply with the laws that oversea WHERE you are conducting your promotion. So, if it is open to legal US residents, then you must comply with not only US National law, but the laws of each State where you allow entries.

While I understand international designers are tougher to "catch", that doesn't make what you're doing any more legal.

Anonymous said...

oversee not oversea

Although, that is a funny typo :)

^^^^^^
What is the difference between putting the name for each amount of $ spent and putting the name in a RAK thread for a draw? I thought the ILLEGAL part was to BUY a ticket, just for a ticket, NOT having the name entered when someone purchases something else since they are getting SOMETHING and not just the CHANCE (which can be thin air).

-------------

Spending $10 for the CHANCE to win $25 is CHANCE. It's random. It's illegal. Read the article. Call your attorney.

Even DST knows better (somewhat). They specifically state that RAKs cannot require a trip to a store to pick out your favorite product or anything like that. A trip to the store is "consideration." Any RAK that requires that is also illegal.

There are legal ways to require a purchase for entry, but it's definitely not "spend $x and get a chance to win blah".

______________________________________

I'm NOT the OP, I couldn't care less if designers run these kinds of promos. But you know how at the end of a tv commercial when they're promoting a contest and they always say there's no purchase necessary to enter, you can write in to get an entry. I think that's the problem, making someone purchase something in order to be entered. If the designers said there's no purchase necessary, just send an e-mail to be entered in the contest if you don't want to buy something, it would be okay.

Anonymous said...

I never pay attention to those types of contests anyway. How do I know that they are actually going to choose someone at random? I bet many choose their friend, or their best customer (the one who spend the most!)

Anonymous said...

Or no one at all. Who's to know?

Anonymous said...

As a designer, I really do choose at random. If I want to do something special for those customers that buy frequently from me, I get them a coupon code or a Gift Certificate to my store separate from any contest. That way it stays fair. Just my 2 cents worth. :)

find any GOOD freebies and blog trains? best sales you've seen? calendars? halloween kits?

yeppers. too many ubers at sbg for her. she is everyone else now. always was but now they in her store poor poor flergs.

Anonymous said...

--------find any GOOD freebies and blog trains? best sales you've seen? calendars? halloween kits?

This is a smack blog - we talk about the opposite: Who is having sales that aren't worth stopping by, blog trains that aren't worth the free download, and the ugliest Halloween kits you've seen.

DST has the nice thread on this:
http://www.digishoptalk.com/boards/dsd-sales-activities-103/dsd-sales-master-list-258141/
And the CTs will tell you the best deals.

Anonymous said...

So where do we go when we don't want smack for no reason, but we want truly honest opinions and not some nice CT blandness? :P I actually like it when people post something they ACTUALLY LIKED here without it being advertising, it doesn't all have to be all negative all the time. I come here for the candid thoughts, not the "how could I infuse more bitch into this post?".

That grab bag by Bekah at SDD looks fantastic, but under no circumstances will I *ever* shop at SDD again.

_____________

That's seriously ridiculous to sell all your kits and CU for $1. It looks very desperate.

Anonymous said...

couple things. the GB from Bekah IS fantastic...why won't you shop there?

2 - to the 75% off person, yeah, she has nice stuff...i just can't scrap fantasy or design it.

3 - this is MY gripe. I am sick to death of any store that has Tricia Curtis in it. Her stupid stamps flood every damn page, and I end up giving up looking for anything!

Anonymous said...

I'm a happy camper, so far a lot of my fav designers are having around 40% to 45% off. I haven't checked today, to see if some of the others are doing that much yet.

Anonymous said...

Is anyone already buying Christmas kits? (I don't because I don't celebrate that holiday)

Anonymous said...

I've had people buying my kits from last year today... kicking myself I didn't have time to do one for this year, yet.

Anonymous said...

I celebrate Christmas, but don't buy Christmas kits. Most of them are far too limiting.

Anonymous said...

Many "themed" kits are fairly limited, i find.

Anonymous said...

There is so much free stuff around, there is no need to buy anything. It all seems a bit desperate to me.

Anonymous said...

The free stuff is usually crap.

Anonymous said...

It all seems a bit desperate to me.

----------------------------

It all does, evidently. SOOOOOOOO sick of you saying that every GD day.

Anonymous said...

okay -- then today we'll be nice, especially as I have time because I've already spent my Paypal. I think I have $20.00 left. :(

But I got a bunch of cool stuff, some accidental duplicates, too! :)

Here's a link for a FB hop -- and since I hate tweets and fb, I'm posting the download link. http://store.digiscrappersbrasil.com.br/bbp-built-by-pallete-bbp-special-dsd-2010-c-80_100.html

(I love DigiscrappersBrasil)

A link to MScraps (and I know a couple of you don't like Joyce Paul, but as a customer, I say she's wunderbar!) The blogtrain is good - naturally the designers have better stuff than the CT peeps. http://www.mscraps.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3943

Their freebie from DSA (along with everybody else from DSA. but the MScraps one is very good): http://digiscrapaddicts.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17564 It's nearly a direct link to their store, so no hopping to get the full kit. mScraps has a bunch of chats, and the freebies are giganitic downloads, so the site is running really slow today.

A link to Laura's Kathi's blog which is FILLED with freebies (and especially alphas): http://lauraskathi.blogspot.com/

A link to LaurasKathi's incredible 300 MB Charity kit which you should buy if you have the money to say thanks for all the freebies on her blog, if nothing else: http://www.mscraps.com/shop/product.php?productid=1710&cat=51&page=1
it would be a nice thing to do. (She has to make freebies and charity kits because her German income tax makes it cost prohibitive for making money from her scrap stuff.)

This is the prettiest thing I bought today: A Little Discovery by somebody whose name starts with a Y. Just kidding Yoshiko. http://www.mscraps.com/shop/product.php?productid=1620&cat=0&page=

I pretty much shop at MScraps and DigiscrappersBrasil. (I like my LOs clean and spartan or have every inch covered, nothing in between) so that's pretty much all I have. I might click on some of the DSA links, but I really don't like going form blog to blog and downloading a bunch of stuff I'll never use.

Anonymous said...

I forgot to say, LOL! on the Tricia Curtis comment.

Anonymous said...

OK. Just when you thought FPD couldn't sink any lower: http://funkyplaygrounddesigns.com/store/manufacturers.php?manufacturerid=89

What in the world is that crap?

Anonymous said...

It's not cool to post the direct links to the freebies in order to bypass the blogs and facebook pages. Designers generally create freebies to draw new customers to their blogs and fan pages. They don't do it just to give you yet another free product.

Freebies are one of the only methods for designers to advertise and to draw new customers. If you give out links to bypass their pages, the designer misses the opportunity to get new subscribers and to show off their new for sale items.

I'm sure that you didn't intend to do that, because you gave out links to designers that you obviously like.

No, she didn't. In that case you have to find the kits in the store and then click a fb link in the description of each kit. What's wrong with you? Don't judge so quickly.

First of all - to whoever posted those links - thank you ! I'm grabbing the collab from the Brazilians...LOL. Its gorgeous. Heck, most 'parts' are kits in themselves!

I don't like what FP has to offer anymore. Its changed way to much, alot like PDP is doing. Just not unique anymore at all.

Anonymous said...

Loved the digiscrapbrasil (sp) store train - lots of goodies there. Wouldn't have bought a kit in that palette.

I know most people here are anti-Miss Tiina - but there's a good coupon book on her blog at least - coupons and all the designers seem to have sales.

http://www.sugarhillco.com/blog/happy-dsd-from-the-sugar-girls/

DSA train was okay - palette was okay. But I skipped some parts because they looked crap.

Anonymous said...

@ all the FPD stuff - garbage. Good for beginners? Are you on crack? Connie Prince is good for beginners. She may not be the most original, but her quality is fantastic.

That FPD stuff isn't even good enough to download for free, let alone pay money for.

Thanks for posting the DSB links. Love that store and shopped there earlier and didn't realize they had some freebies.

Anonymous said...

To the person who chastised me -- the link for the MScraps blog-thingie was right on the DSA page - I was explaining that it wasn't a hop-hop....just a single download from mScraps from that link. (In other words, go there because you don't have to work too hard to get a nice big professional kit). I realize now how it sounded. My bad.

The sad thing (to me) is that the designers just throw that shit into a mini and call it a day, while the, I'll say new/beginning/&/or bad designers sweat bullets, probably for a week, and still have such an inferior/mediocre product.

Who was first with the rolled flowers?

Who was first with the rolled flowers?

November 6, 2010 8:19 PM

-------

Seriously? I don't know but I saw them first in a kit by Kasia. But my guess would be some designer who sells CU.

Anonymous said...

The earliest instance of a rolled paper flower i found was from Racheal's Scrap, as the product is dated July 5th 2010, in her store. However, i found something from Loucee posted in a product gallery on June 7, but those do not look like they were handmade, but maybe just purchased roses. They might have been something that sparked the idea for others.

BTW, i so like it when the date of upload is visible in a store. I guess i am curious and i like to know if a product is recent or not, especially if it is a new store i visit or ir i visit rarely. In any case, i found several other Rolled Paper Flowers, but no date to help.

Anonymous said...

rachael was not the first but is on the bandwagon now making set after set. i saw them before her but can't remember where. .and also saw them before kasia.

i do like them so it's all good.

janet phillips has mickey mouse ears in her templates. why? wtf is that. she is designing for 20 years now and ssd let that get by. (this is replying to initial post here). now i am not purchasing from her. how many ssd designers had mouse ears over the years?

I'm guessing that the stores with 25% off sales will be the ones having the big Black Friday sales.

All in all I am soooo happy! Seriously, I can't go to sleep because I am tagging and organizing all my new files. Everything is so PRETTY!

Thanks for the tip on the Bekah grab bag, 6:07. I don't usually buy CU since it is usually more expensive, but this was a good deal for PU use, too.

Anonymous said...

I was very careful with what I spent my hard earned $$'s on. I had a list of things I had seen around...and basically stuck to it...and I might be the only one...but I am COMPLETELY happy and satisfied with my purchases! Matter of fact...in most cases, I got more than I expected. There were a few things I picked up not on my list...that GB from Bekah being the first. and a few nice templates that I saw on SuzyQ's blog....and I know - not a bad thing to say in this post at all...ah well. I'm sure someone will come along and bitch enough about something. I'm just...happy.

Anyone seen any good templates during DSD? I don't mean the same old bunch of squares but actual complete templates with lots of clustering. I came across some templates that I meant to bookmark, and now can't remember who made them but they had some kind of grungy paint or mask that looked really different. Anyone have any idea where I could find these? Or know anyone who does templates like this?

thnx for the suggestions on the templates. Neither are the ones I am not looking for, but good enabling. I like the ones at TLP, but they all seem kind of like the same designs just slightly rearranged. I checked out the other Sarah's - her freebie looked pretty cool, but still not what I was looking for. The ones I saw of are like a standard template, but then there's areas where you put a photo and it makes it look like it's painted on? I don't know really how to explain it. i "get" that blinkies are supposed to show off a designer's talents, but they slow down the page (even on premium dsl) and are distracting. anyone else feel the same way?

Anonymous said...

Nope. I just find them annoying. In most forums, you have the ability to turn off siggies in your user control panel.

Anonymous said...

I always turn off blinkies - they crash my browser and are annoying to look at. Before I found digiscrapping, the forums I spent time in actively prohibited anything blinking in your signature, so I was actually surprised that not only are they allowed in digiscrapping, they are encouraged.

Anonymous said...

I hate to see them in signatures and HATE when they're included in a kit. There's just a space eater that I'm going to delete. Along with that, I also when that "no piracy" jpg is included as well. If someone is going to commit piracy, is that stupid picture really going to stop them. It's just a waste of space that I'm going to delete. Oh, and shortcuts to blogs or stores...another waste of space I have to delete. How about if the only thing in the kit zips are the items from the kit, a TOU, and a preview and not all that other crap that gets stuffed in as well.

Anonymous said...

Royanna is the WORST for that - she includes like 3 images of herself, and sample layouts, and 3 or 4 different logos, and her TOU in text and in PDF and and and .....

It takes some incredible arrogance to think I'd want even ONE picture of a designer in their kit, much less multiples.

Anonymous said...

I actually like it when the designer includes a link to their blog because sometimes they have their own store too and I can buy cheaper from them. Or get freebies from their blog that I would not have found otherwise.

I do agree that blinkies are annoying in downloads though, oh and 3 different versions of a preview for the same kit! Annoying!

I am glad you brought up the blinkie issue. I can't stand them and am glad to know I'm not alone.

In the downloads, I don't mind links to their blog and/or store, though I usually delete them. I hate when designers include a 3600x3600 preview in their downloads--give me 600x600 or so (but not 200x200, that's too small). And that stupid "no piracy" thing--is that really going to stop anyone? What a joke!

Royanna really is the worst with packing her downloads with extra sh*t. I downloaded her portion of the Orient blog train. Her "read me" file contained 12 files--only two of which were TOU. The other 10 were pictures of her, blinkies, links, banners, etc. No one is that important.

And the CT who did it (the designer was not aware), posted something in a hard to read English that she only used Joelle`s painting because she liked her and was surprised that she was upset about it. That CT has been let go from the designer`s CT since.

It's really irksome when you unzip the file and find that only 2 out of the 12 items in it are papers or elements for the kit and the other 10 are assorted and sundried crap. I've avoided designers who do that no matter how much I like their work. I don't have the time to download 10 - 12 zip files and unzip them all just to find out that, had the crap been removed, it could have all fit into 2 or 3 zip files.

I also find that "no piracy" jpg that uses somebodies child really kind of creepy. Why would you use your child for that.

Being that South Africa's legal drinking age is age 18- as it is inmost of the world- I'm really not thinking it's quite that big a deal. IF she permitted him, hwo is that different than having a glass of wine with dinner or special occasions.

No it ain't! I'm not a Traci Reed fan but she is not infringing on trademarks nor copyright. Show me where exactly you think she is doing this?

The mushrooms, stars and clouds are just like Kawaii, very generic. Ooh, there are red and green overalls and a pink princess dress in there, give me a break.

It may be close, but not good enough. Some of you need to lighten the fuck up and educate yourselves.

Anonymous said...

Well, what happened when someone did a toy story kit? It is not just the actual images, but it is the idea. The entire theme of he kit is after the video game.

Are you trying to tell me that she put those things together in a kit for a mushroom themed kit? I think not.

She not only copied the whole IDEA but the characters too.

Anonymous said...

You cannot copyright an idea, how many times does that have to be said? I don't see any characters at all in that kit, I see mushrooms etc. There is no Mario, no Luigi, no Princess.

The Toy Story kit had actual Toy Story characters in it.

Anonymous said...

So you are trying to say that this kit was not made for the super mario game and because she switched up the characters in the game a little and switched colors around that it is not infringing?

As I recall the toy story kit had regular toys in it. The characters were not the same. If you were using this same logic with that kit, then you would say that it is just an astronaut, and a cowboy and cowgirl doll. It is not the exact same, so there fore it is not infringement. Come on!

How is it fair to totally rip one designer apart for doing something like this and not do it to the other? It is the exact same type of thing!

Anonymous said...

It isn't the exact same thing. The toy story kit had copyrighted toys in it that were also toys in the movie. That is using actual copyrighted property.

This kit does utilize a basic idea, but as someone else said ideas cannot be copyrighted. I think she actually did a good job of getting the idea across without crossing any lines. If she had used any actual characters or even her interpretive drawing of characters she would have crossed the line.

Anonymous said...

^^^^

She answered for me.

There were several Toy Story kits being posted here at one time. One of them did not have the Toy Story characters in it and I thought and said it was okay. However, another one did have the actual characters.

I don't 'rip apart' anyone here. I speak my mind here, I speak my mind there but I don't rip and shred.

Anonymous said...

So you are trying to say that this kit was not made for the super mario game and because she switched up the characters in the game a little and switched colors around that it is not infringing?

No, I'm not saying that, where do you see me saying that? I said it was close enough to the Mario game but not infringing close.

Anonymous said...

http://sweetshoppedesigns.com/sweetshoppe/product.php?productid=19913&cat=0&page=1

so what about this one then ?

Anonymous said...

^^^^

Not that one either. You can't get confused with the CT pages and the actual kit. The kit has, again generic kawaii characters.

What is it supposed to be? Pokemon? You are reaching if you think they look alike enough. They don't.

Anonymous said...

Those kit's don't infringe on anyone's copyright, it's true, but they are most definitely trademark infringements.

You can't copyright an idea, but you can trademark it - and trademark laws are quite different than Copyright ... something is a trademark issue if it is similar enough to a trademark idea that someone could reasonably confuse them. (That is, if the item has been trademarked - it's not a default for all works, unlike Copyright, Trademarks has to be registered).

Not a copy - just similar enough to be confusing.

Those kits were designed to look like Mario and Pokemon - they were designed with the intent that a reasonable person would confuse them with Mario and Pokemon. Mario and Pokemon are definitely registered trademarks.

Not Copyright infringement.

Trademark infringement.

To the lady who said educate yourselves - I suggest you do the same. About Trademark.

We don't all need to lighten the fuck up - we need to tighten the fuck up. Get our own ideas, respect other people's ideas, and start treating this like a real business. We all know we don't want people making things that look just like our work (whether trademarked or not) - but we keep doing it to other people.

Anonymous said...

You can't copyright an idea, but you can trademark it -
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
You can't trademark an idea either so maybe it's you who needs to brush up.

A trademark is a word, phrase, symbol or design, or a combination of words, phrases, symbols or designs, that identifies and distinguishes the SOURSE of the GOODS of one party from those of others. Nothing about ideas in the Trademark law.

Coca Cola has a TM for their goods. Other Colas can also have TMs Disney has a TM for their goods. Ideas can not be trademarked.

Anonymous said...

Oops Source rather then Sourse

Anonymous said...

OK, so I had it wrong with saying it was copyright but I knew whatever it was it was not right. Thank you for clarifying.

Trademark infringing is still not cool and I agree with you that they need to get their own ideas.

I think it says a lot about a designer when they can design a kit for a specific layout with out using trademarked or copyrighted images. But when they take a trademarked idea and make it their own by designing things that are not infringing but still support the idea, I think that shows real creativity.

Anonymous said...

I had asked this question last week but it got buried under the NSD stuff...

Established designers, I'd like to know when you release a new kit, how many copies would you expect to sell upon the initial launch? And after the initial sales die down, how many do you usually sell over the next while? Do you mostly sell kits right at launch and then no more?

Anonymous said...

Ya know, its weird...for me anyway - I sell some at the first release, and I have it on sale...but I also sell them later on. I have some that are so buried in the back of my shop that I'm surprised anyone finds them. I keep thinking I'll take those older ones out - but then someone buys them...so I leave 'em in.

So here's what I'm wondering... it's no surprise that not all stores are created equal, and being accepted into certain stores is a surefire way to increase your profits. For instance, I would think that Sweet Shoppe is a top tier store and I imagine than their designers make decent $$$, though that's just guessing, I have NO idea at all what they make. But i also know that the stores we talk about on here and DST are just a small slice of the pie, they are probably not optimized for SEO and so newbies starting out would probably not fall on them and instead find Digital Scrapbook Place or other.

Edeline is new at 2 peas and now sells kits for 14.99$.

http://www.twopeasinabucket.com/shop/edeline-marta/104041-digikit-scary-boo/?filters=digital-kits-and-fonts%2Fedeline-marta%2Fdigital-kits

Which is fine by me! I think our products are undervalued. But I wonder if at 14.99$ there is a big market? Are the 2 peas designers making twice -triple-quadruple what someone would make at Sweet Shoppe for instance? Because I don't think Edeline is bad, but I also don't think that kit is all that... but to people that don't know there is a cheaper alternative? I wonder if they just go ahead and buy whatever is on sale at 2 peas because that's all they know, and so I wonder if 2 peas is somehow designer heaven.

Anonymous said...

I would never pay $15 for a digital kit - and I know a lot of people think the same way. So do they make more money just because their kit costs double or triple? I doubt it.

I doubt it. It seems to me that designers at 2Peas don't need to do a whole lot of the other stuff that is generally required by the other stores. You know, challenges, collabs, etc, yet designers leave 2Peas all the time. Usually the designers that have previously sold at the so called top tier stores. So it would seem to me that it's an easier gig at 2Peas, so why do designers leave there?

Yeah, but if you look at Dianne Rigdon, Lauren Reid, Vinnie Pearce, etc who also sell at 2Peas, they are still selling their kits at their usual prices, ie. the $4 to $7 range.

You asked about the cheaper alternative, well it's right in the store at 2Peas with the above designers.

I think Edeline is being silly trying to sell her stuff at twice the price of the others.

aren't Lori Davison and Flergs kits in the $12-15 range? I mean they sell all the bits separate too, but if you buy it all your spending that much. So why WOULDN'T Edeline feel she should be charging the same? Im not a designer so I can't say higher prices would make ME happy, but really the "good" designers do not charge enough for their products. Would I, personally, buy as much stuff at the higher price - No. BUT I would probably spend the same AMOUNT. Is Edeline good? I have no idea, I have never purchased any of her products - she moves around way too much and it gets on my nerves to constantly see "MY NEW STORE" crap. Maybe I'll try her out after she's been at 2Peas for a while. Presuming she stays there of course.

I don't buy Lori's kits, as they are not my thing, but they sure do look jam packed and at least it's original art, not a bunch of CU crap recolored, like Edeline's.

Flergs does not sell her kits for that much. She does sell 'bundles' or 'collections' though, which are usually made up of the kit, and add ons. They are also jam packed. I don't buy her stuff either.

You have a false comparison here.

She can ask as much as she wants, but that doesn't people are going to be buying it. There are a bunch of talented designers over at 2Peas, who are asking less for their kits. Who would you buy from? The designer asking more or the one asking less?

I continually sell kits. Sometimes they sell well at launch and sometimes it takes awhile. I don't think there is any set amount vs. time. I keep my sellers around and if I have some bombs they get tossed out.

I am the OP. My point was that I will never pay for a kit (be it $5 or 15 like this one), when the designer has used a freebie that I already have (in this case it´s a Miss Tiina font). So I agree that sometimes digital kits are overpriced! And it makes me mad the fact that this "designer" thinks that she can easily deceive us by selling (at an extremely high price!!!) some recolored elements she got for free.

Anonymous said...

The reasons why I will never buy digital kits:

First case: I see a beaded necklace, I like it a lot, I buy it. The crafter who made it had fun making it, because beading is a hobby for her, but now she takes my money and gives me the item. She has no necklaces anymore. Another girl likes the necklace I was wearing. She orders one too. The crafter makes a new necklace from scratch, she takes the money and she gives the new necklace. She has no necklaces any more.

Second case: I see a digital kit, I like it a lot, I buy it. The designer who made it had fun making it. She takes my money and now I can download the kit. Another girl likes the kit. She orders one too. The designer does nothing at all for the second order. She takes the money and the downloading is ready. She can do the same thing a hundreds of times.

What do you think? Should I pay the designer for something: a) she had fun while making it, b)she can still have one or zillions of copies for herself and for others, c) probably she payed nothing for the raw material (see: Miss Tiina's fonts are free with credit to her).

Anonymous said...

If I see one more kit featuring doodles from Whimsy Primsy or Americo, I'm going to vomit. Learn how to draw on your own, find a new clip art provider, or figure out a way to make a kit that doesn't rely on those frickin' things. Talk about oversaturating the market!

Anonymous said...

================

I make necklaces, and I make scrap kits. A necklace might cost me 50$ of materials to make, and if I sell it for 75$, that's only a 25$ profit for what is likely 2-3 hours of work.

Now for designing, I enjoy doing it, but I wouldn't push myself so much if I weren't getting paid to do it. I set deadlines for myself and treat it like a business, I wouldn't do it like this if I wasn't getting paid something for my efforts. And your little 6$ contribution (which is less than 5$ after fees) would not be enough to make that kit worthwhile, it's the volume that enables the prices to be so low... I spend more than 2-3 hours on a kit and I make 25 dollars profit on a necklace, if I spend 15 hours on a kit, it wouldn't be very worthwhile if I wasn't selling 30+ copies of it.

Anonymous said...

Agree.

I don't understand how 'having fun making it' can even be one of the factors. If a designer felt miserable making the kit you'd be more motivated to buy it? Gee....

^^^ So, using that logic (use of real materials), Amazon should have to give away any books for Kindle, once they sell the first one? Or a musician, once they sell one MP3 file, has to give the rest away free?

You need to money, time, materials to make a copy of a hard copy of a book, not just a right click.

--------------

And you need to pay for a webhost, ISP, etc. to keep selling a digital kit after the first one. Again, your logic is quite faulty. The investment in designing a digital kit does not end at the "designing" phase.

And as someone else pointed out...I guess you won't be buying an eBooks, MP3's, digital downloads of TV shows or movies because there's no phyical materials used in their creation.

You're trying to find a reason to justify not buying digital kits and this one just isn't going to hold water. If you don't want to buy them, fine, that's your choice. However, please do not continue to employ faulty logic to explain why and expect that said faulty logic will not be pointed out.

Anonymous said...

Even if there's no CU involved, designers need their scanners, cameras, design software, and raw supplies like papers to crumple and scan, etc.

Not to mention everyone deserves to be fairly compensated for their time, and good kits take hours and hours to make (especially with no CU)

Nice try though.

Now go back to your miserable job - and if you aren't miserable at it, you should either stop accepting paychecks or quit and find something you are miserable at.

Anonymous said...

All in all, physical products will take into consideration supplies, time and skill to get priced. In digital even if you wanted to discard the supply part (because you THINK it is made of thin air), there is still time and skill involved and those DO HAVE A PRICE. And i agree that digital designers also need equipement that you dont seem to factor in.

Anonymous said...

Maybe doctors should not get paid because they dont give you any physical products? Only their time, skills, knowledge, and maybe a piece of paper (for a prescription). Gee... and if they enjoy working... they should do it for free, right?

I know I'm interrupting a good designer vs someone who doesn't buy digi debate ... but I have a question ... why do people sell color swatches?

I've wonder that as well. Can't I just save the preview file to my computer then pick out the colors in PS or something?

I think the better question, though, is....why do people buy color swatches?

LOL! I was wondering the same thing when I saw that product preview earlier today.

DO people actually buy color swatches?

I'm a designer and I would not buy a color swatch. I don't really understand the concept of selling them either, but I noticed over DSD that there were a lot for sale.

^^^^^
That's a good question!

Honestly, if you can't pick a swatch (from your own imagination or some place of inspiration), you really should find something other to do than design!

Maybe doctors should not get paid because they dont give you any physical products? Only their time, skills, knowledge, and maybe a piece of paper (for a prescription). Gee... and if they enjoy working... they should do it for free, right?

LOL. Even if the product is "virtual" (like a digiscrap kit), it's still a product.

Wonder if the person who wants free stuff buys food? Just sayin'...

According to the TOU on Miss Tiina's site:

By downloading any Miss Tiina Fonts you agree to abide by the following terms:

General Terms for all license types: You may NOT redistribute my fonts without my prior consent.

You may not alter and redistribute my fonts nor can you include plain png’s, .abr, tubes, stamps, etc. of the letters.

There are additional TOU's for designers. Why did you only show part of them??

Wrong question, the question should be, why do people BUY color swatches?

If you are so concerned about them, why didn't you post the others?

I posted the GENERAL terms. Feel free to post the others if you want.

If I see one more kit featuring doodles from Whimsy Primsy or Americo,
---------

I don't even know who or what they are, I'm guessing some kind of doodle clip art providers?

I think if someone has a problem buying a digital kit because the designer had fun and the product is not tangible, I wonder if said person has ever purchased software that is downloaded, an ebook, a video game, etc.

You just can not compare purchasing a beaded necklace to purchasing a digital kit. We're talking apples and oranges here. Not the same thing at all.

I'm not all that concerned about it. I was just following along with the discussion and thought it odd.

Since Edeline is a designer the terms relating to designers would be more relevant to the discussion instead of general terms.

There are so many fricking terms. Do this for personal, that for designing, something else for scrap4hire and something entirely different for CU. Who the heck has time to be the TOU police anyway. And do we really care?

Never heard of them either.

A lazy designer I guess. Maybe that is why when a pretty new kit comes out you all of a sudden see many kits in the same color scheme. I wouldn't want to buy a color swatch and have my kit to look like any one else's. Part of the fun is creating your own color scheme. Oh wait....we aren't supposed to have fun!!!

One time there was a company that had a brand new machine. The machine stopped working and they called a consultant to come and check it out. The consultant came, looked things over, and then pressed a button and the machine started working. The consultant sent the company a bill for $1,000. The company called the consultant and asked why the bill was so high. Why should they pay the consultant so much for just pressing a button. The consultant replied that they were not paying him to press a button. They were paying him for knowing what button to press!

p.s. This was a joke that I probably butchered. I think the point is that knowledge has value. So just because a kit is digital doesn't diminish its worth. Its worth is determined by other factors such as the designers knowledge, creativity, and skill.

Not necessarily. Some people just don't have the knack of putting colors together. What I meant, or should have said, was why buy a color swatch when there are so many free color palette makers out there?

In fact, if have Photoshop, you can make your own very quickly from any photo using indexed color mode and then generating a color table.

On the one hand, there are people (actually not people, women) who think they can sell anything, even air!
On the other hand, there are women who think designing a scrap kit is buying a swatch, some CU elements, and some overlays, make a preview with them all and call it a kit.

I think this is what the person is talking about:

Americo:

Whimsy Primsy is pure vomitness. Americo is cute, just over user.

I agree! Americo has some great quality, cute element templates, but they are over used. Good for him though!

If people buy it, why not? Don't blame the seller, blame the buyer.

Thanks. Americo is nice, at least there's a variety in the doodles.
