Here is some new space for you to discuss DSA, DST, MSA or anything else you want to debate about.
FYI - I do see your emails, but as a general rule I will not respond to them. Call me paranoid or whatever, but y'all can be ruthless. Feel free to send me alerts as I check my email more often than the blog, I will see them. So anyway, thanks for the reminder, I have been meaning to get a new post up just for you.
For the person looking for the dirt on Amanda, I don't have time to rehash 3+weeks worth of drama for you, feel free to read the blog archives, it unfolded here. You have the link, spend your time looking for the information you are requesting.
If you are in the US, enjoy the long weekend, hopefully nice weather has arrived in your part of the world.

«Oldest ‹Older 1001 – 1200 of 1394 Newer› Newest»You're taking my comment out of context. Had you read my original post, I was basically stating that I don't see many CT layouts that appeal to the average scrapper, like me. I would like to see kits highlighting all ways a kit can be used, not just altered-art styles. I do scrap the way I want. I was in no way saying that any other way was wrong. An example of how I would do a layout would be one large picture in the center of a page, accented with a frame and using parts of a kit to enhance it with journaling. You don't see a whole lot of CT layouts like that. I wondered why and that's what my post was all about. I'm sure there are lots of CTs that post "average" scrapper style layouts but there are so many stores and galleries, it's hard to know without visiting a bunch of galleries. I don't have time. I like when designers post their CT layouts within the kit descriptions and those are basically the layouts I'm refering to that I don't see many pages that aren't fantasy or altered art styles. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong designers.

---------------------------------
This is why I like to visit the galleries of the store where I bought the kit from. Very often other customers (who are regular memory-making scrappers like me) will post their layouts in that store's gallery. Whether it was to take part in a challenge or just to show off their page, these aren't CT-pimping layouts.
I like that I can see what the average scrapper does with that kit (and by "average" I by no means imply lesser-than or inferior - just the majority of scrapper who likes to record her family's memories). I don't seem to get this kind of style at places where CTs post to promote a designer's kit (often by using stock photos). There are a couple, but these are mostly ignored due to the hype of the Praise Game and GSO, where mostly just the artsy stuff gets attention.
Even though I can appreciate those layouts for their artistic value, they don't inspire me for my own pages because that's not the style I scrap in. So I really do like those designers who have "average" CT members along with more avant garde artistic types. To me that displays the versatility of a kit, knowing that I will be able to use it as well.
Well I don't know what fantasy world you live in but
it's too bad more designers don't allow the average scrapper to CT for them because maybe they'd learn something about scrapbooking.
_____
I don't understand why you would think it would be better for a designer to allow a scrapper improve on her own dime?
Huh. I took it to mean that the designer might learn something about scrapbooking and what the average scrapper is looking for, but I probably misinterpreted it.
I don't resent ct's and I'm not "jalous" of them. However, a. *some* of them don't represent their designers very well on the message boards. b. when I see someone with a HUGE ct team, it is a turnoff. If you can afford to give your stuff away to tons of people, I don't feel like paying for it (yeah, petty, I know). and c. for some reason it does grate on my nerves a little when someone is on 12 teams. Give someone else a chance.
Actually this isn't true. You're shopping at the wrong stores and looking at the wrong types of kits for YOUR scrapping style.
______________________
I shop with designers that sell kits that I like. I am certainly not shopping at the wrong stores, that would imply that I'm too stupid to know what I'm buying. I have bought many kits that don't showcase layouts that are my style but I still use them just fine. Just because layouts aren't done in my style doesn't mean they can't be. I simply stated that I don't see that style showcased in the layout examples and it would be nice to.
Again, my post was taken out of context.
Just because layouts aren't done in my style doesn't mean they can't be. I simply stated that I don't see that style showcased in the layout examples and it would be nice to.
---
Since you're so good at YOUR style, perhaps you should email the designer and ask to be on her team since you can help her CT vary the style a bit?
I have found that stores that have primarily fantasy CT layouts usually have kits that don't work for my style. They don't appeal to me they appeal to the fantasy scrapper and therefor attract those people for the CT.
I'm not out to copy other's layouts so it really doesn't matter to me what the CT does with a kit. I buy it because I like it and it will work for my pics.
I suppose you are going to say AGAIN that your statement was taken out of context. Maybe you are not very good at communicating? More than one person found your statement about not wanting to see extractions on your layouts very critical.
I have only been scrapping for a couple of months and learning as I go. That's not to say that I am a below average scrapper, I'm still trying to find my style.
What I appreciate a lot is those designers who not only bring out a great kit, but also give some ideas on how to scrap with it. Not just with CT layouts but also with quick pages and other bits and pieces that are already put together.
I discovered a designer just the other day who creates lots of addons for her kits (I'm sure there are more that do this as well). I don't mean extra elements or recolored bits. I mean things like frames and clustered things from the kit contents that are already designed for the user. I was able to put together a wedding album for my sister within a week (50+ pages) very quickly because I was able to combine the premade stuff with the rest of the kit.
I'm assuming this designer is also a scrapper and knows how to put a kit together because she uses it herself to scrap with. To me that is much more valuable than someone who just throws a bunch of CU items together and hopes for the best.
I agree with the idea that it would be great if designers had a bit more variety on their teams to show all the ways their kits can be used. It would be great to see a fantasy kit translated to a more paper scrapped style since there are so many folks who gravitate to that style, and it would open up their marketplace a bit. And this applies to paper-style designers as well. It's not an issue of one being better than another, it's marketing, pure and simple. Show how versatile your kit can be and you bet you'll begin to develop a new customer base you've never had before.
^^^
I agree with you and like the way you put it.

this is exactly what I'm looking for, would you please share which
designer you're talking about so I can check out her stuff? Anything that saves time and allows for multiple l/o's is awesome.
I'm not sure if these are the same that you were referring to. I've bought collections from Natali, Lori Davison and Peta Boardman (all at Scrapbookgraphics) who have coordinating products that match. I especially love their quickpages because sometimes I'm too intimidated by their designs that I don't know where to start. I also recently became a fan of Rina Kroe at Scrapbookelements. She has lots of addons and clusters to her kits that are ready to use on a page and easy to scrap with. I haven't shopped there in a while, but I believe Ztampf does/did something similar. Perhaps there are more, but those are the ones I can think of right now.
I just got an order from Amanda Dykan. No CU stuff, but what should I do? Is her money still good?
Is this maybe the kind of collections she was referring to?

Are you kidding? Wasn't she was leaving the digi world for good this time?
Money's money. As long as she's just a customer to purchase personal scraps, I don't see a problem.
I'd sure be keeping my eye out, though. Who knows what designer name she's calling herself today.
Wouldn't you worry a bit about chargebacks?
sigh...I would love to create fantasy layouts & I keep buying those type of kits. The trouble is I really don't have photos to match. My kids are grown & out of town. I don't have grandkids, just 2 dogs who aren't very angelic part of the time.
If you don't have precious little cherubs, how would use a fantasy kit?
Once in a while I actually have a few flowers to photograph.
That's the thing about fantasy, you can do whatever you want. You can put wings on your dogs and have them frolicking in fields of wild flowers. Or you could extract yourself and do a fantasy layout. Or you can do what some CT's do and download pics off the internet.
With fantasy there are no rules.

Have to agree with this. She's beyond insane.
I think the post was a joke. No way would AD try and buy something under her real name.
I think it's time for a new post and some new topics! Don't ya think?
I mean what happened to all the journaling so that one can understand why the page was done in the first place. These fantasy and frufru LOs, while beautiful and sometimes funny, they in no way reflect "real" life memories or even tell a real story. I'm so glad that I don't have to see that from my CT. They just want to scrap normal and they make great LOs to save their memories rather then having to see a child hanging from a vine envloped in a cluster of frufru. They are just your average scrapper and I love them to death.
---------------------
I'm sorry that you think that the fantasy scrappers aren't average. What makes them not average? The fact that they don't shove a photo on a page, frame it, put an element cluster on it and then some journaling?
I know lots of CTMs who leave the journaling off the pages they post to the galleries because they don't want everyone to know everything about them. It's personal and private to them and their families. The journaling goes on the page they print.
Who put you in charge to decide what a real life memory is to some people? Just because it isn't your idea; it doesn't make it any less real for the person who made the page.
You are a very judgmental designer. I'm glad I don't CT for you.
To the person who made reference to the a person on "12 cts" Why do you honestly care how many teams one person is on. Frankly I doubt that the amount of teams they are on are cutting into your opportunity to be there. How do you know they weren't asked to be on those teams. Not everyone does apply for every team they make it on. I mean really come on, they are going to turn a spot down because it may potentially be taking up a spot for another scrapper. It just doesn't make sense that because one person is on a team its the reason you (and by you I am speaking hypothetically) aren't. I don't know why everybody feels entitled to worry about what other scrappers do and don't do, who they ct for, how they scrap. To each their own. If you REALLY are in this to preserve memories then you shouldn't give a shit. To say that people on multiple cts need to give others a chance though is a bit much. And if a scrapper is popular who cares. Are you angry because you want to be "popular" because I will tell you now. I am not popular, have no interest in being popular so I could give a shit less about who is. If I like a scrapper, or a designer or a store its not because they have an allstar line up on their ct, its because I liked the kit enough to come out of pocket for it. I am on a few creative teams, some designers would be considered "popular" some not as much and they all rock my world. If I am giving up the little bit of spare time I am on to work for them I really love them. Kind of rambling a little but I think some are kinda losing the common sense factor in all this. And really this is what all the whiney bitches in the dst forums harp about all day so is it necessary to bring this here. I thought the purpose of this blog was to get away from that.
sigh...I would love to create fantasy layouts & I keep buying those type of kits. The trouble is I really don't have photos to match. My kids are grown & out of town. I don't have grandkids, just 2 dogs who aren't very angelic part of the time.

I know quite a few scrappers who rock the fantasy kits and they don't scrap children. Most of them use the kits to create art journal pages.

Neither of your posts were taken out of context. The fact that you had to explain both of them just shows that you need to think a little more before posting, instead of going off on a rant.
Oh good grief. Would you expect a shampoo commercial to use a regular everyday woman with brown mousy flat hair to showcase their product? No, they use a model with beautiful thick shiny hair. And her hair is done by a stylist. It's all about marketing.
Designers use CT's in the same way. They want to market and advertise their product.
There are a lot of examples of scrappers out there who scrap their memories and are clean and simple scrappers. You need to do your own research and not expect the designers to provide you with examples that fit your style.
It's funny. When I see a fantasy layout, I ask myself, "Did that really happen?" I often wonder what the original context of the photo/extracted image was. Is that scrap booking? More like an art portfolio.
Are most Fantscrappers European?
What's funny is that no one seems to mind a page with elements and papers on it that have nothing to do with the photo. It really doesn't matter that it's a photo of a go kart race and it has flowers all over it, as long as the page itself is like a paper page. It's not a fantasy LO, so it's ok.
FYI, I just checked the first 60 LOs posted over at DST and there is a whole two fantasy LOs. How can that be? I mean, I thought no one was doing 'average' pages and everything is fantasy. I guess not.

Awww step out of your box. Scrap a fantasy scene with your dogs. You might be surprised. :) I love seeing the layouts with pets in them. :) Put your flower & dog pics together. ;)
I love them all! Fantasy, extracted, out of bounds, and those that look like paper scrapped with shadows that make it look like you can touch the layout.
I am on 8 CTs and I try to do a completely different and original layout everytime I sit down with a new (gosh, how I love opening a new kit)kit! I know my designers, so I see the new techniques they are using,
the spin on an older element with something new added or twisted into it!
I scrap for fun and enjoyment, some of them make it to the printer for my books, but some are just stinking fun to put together...
break loose, do a layout that you love! ha leave comments for yourself...stick the rest!
^^^^^^^^
hehehehe! what fun to see such enthusiasm from a CT member. not just creating layouts because they feel forced to pimp their designers.....but because it seems as if you love what you do. very refreshing.
Why do you honestly care how many teams one person is on.
Because I think it's incredibly greedy.
And I have never applied for a CT. So there.

Greedy? How so?
I never pimp the designers I CT for. I hate the word pimp in the first place. I promote my designers when and where it's appropriate. I don't feel forced to do anything.
Why is it greedy? They apply/are asked to join a team. The get on the team because the designers likes their layouts. The more teams they are on, the more layouts (and therefore work) they have to do. They earned their places on those teams. Do you think there should be a limit? "oh gee, I'd love to be on your team but I'm already on 2. Choose someone who isn't on a team yet - even if you don't like their scrapping style"...........
Grow up!
LOL Greedy thats a new one. I can tell you *most* people on a creative team bust their ass for the people they design for. As for never applying its a bit crappy to sit and complain about those taking up space on creative teams when you don't even put yourself out there in the first place isn't it. Or would you say its easier to harp on a smack blog under an annon identity then put yourself out there and make an effort. I am assuming you do want to be on (a) creative team(s) if you are bitching about those that already are... To also make a blanket statement like the people already on these teams are taking up (your) space is slightly arrogant. Again if you are scrapping for memories why do you even care if someone is "greedy" as you put it.
This whole conversation is so idiotic. All I said in my first post was that I wondered why all I ever saw was fantasy style layouts being showcased with kits and no average or regular style layouts. Fantasy isn't my style and it would be nice to see something else done with those pretty kits I see. That's all I said. I don't give a crap how you scrap, what you scrap, who you scrap for, how many people you scrap for or if you eat peanut butter and mayonaise sandwiches and then stand on your head and chant before you scrap. But of course, this is a smack blog so no one is allowed to have an opinion without someone telling them they're wrong or jealous. lol
Oh good grief. Would you expect a shampoo commercial to use a regular everyday woman with brown mousy flat hair to showcase their product? No, they use a model with beautiful thick shiny hair. And her hair is done by a stylist. It's all about marketing.
_________________
Thankfully, I'm bright enough to realize those models have had more done to their hair than simply to have it washed in whatever shampoo is being advertised. They probably don't even use whatever shampoo they're modeling for. If I based all my purchases on results of what products can do in commercials, I'd be broke and living on the street.
Thing is, you don't have to be outrageously off-the-wall with your layouts to promote a kit. As long as it's done well, it doesn't matter what style it is.
Scrapping is busting your ass? Whatever.
I wish the Sunshine Brigade would go back to DST.
There is way more involved in being on a creative team then just scrapping...
As for coming from the "sunshine brigade", thats probably one of the most retarded things I have read on here. Seriously thats all you could come back with LOL. Just because I dont have an oh why me attitude to everything hardly makes me a dst harpie.
Really? You're using the 'R' word? Do you have any idea how offensive that is?
And where on earth did you get the idea that Sunshine Brigade = 'oh why me?'
Moron.
Nice. Seems I have managed to offend the ethics police...LOL On a smack blog of all places. I have read much worse here. Really.
FYI, I just checked the first 60 LOs posted over at DST and there is a whole two fantasy LOs. How can that be? I mean, I thought no one was doing 'average' pages and everything is fantasy. I guess not.

____________
You can make a pile of dog shit look pretty if you do the layout right.
I just had an epiphany reading all this. I NEVER look at the layout galleries or praise games or anything like that.
I do my buying mainly from newsletters. If I like a kit, I'll click on it, then the enlarged images with layouts, that's how I decide what to buy.
So why am I making my ct post to galleries?
I guess I have some thinking to do about it.
How do you all feel about that? Do you look at galleries anymore at all?
I would love it if newsletters actually linked to the kit, some don't even link to the store. lol
It irritates me to no end when the darned newsletters don't even link to the store. Hello? How hard can it be to provide a link, if you want me to come and buy your stuff? Granted, it's not exactly hard to go find the store, but I get annoyed enough that I won't even bother.
Just the opposite. I hate newsletters and never sign up or I opt out if I forget to uncheck the sign me up box. I don't offer one, either. I don't know why. I guess I see them like spam and they irk me.
The only newsletters that annoy me are the ones that come too often. I love looking at new things, once or even twice a week is plenty though.
How do you all feel about that? Do you look at galleries anymore at all?
June 11, 2009 12:42 PM
I very rarely look at galleries anymore. I NEVER bother with DST or the Praise game, etc. I used to check designer announcements over at DST, but I mainly rely on newsletters now, too. There's just too much garbage to wade through at places like DST.
This is interesting.
I'm thinking with the amount of views any layout gets, what's the point of posting in galleries at all.
And, about the dog vomit remark (lol) good point, if all the views are just from the praise game, why bother?
I love getting newsletters from my fav designers and seeing what they have coming up. I don't sign up though unless it's someone I've bought from again and again. I don't really look thru the layout gallery anymore at DST, but daily I do check out the new products gallery to see what's there. More often than not if the newsletter shows some great layout ideas I do go and buy the kit.
I love them too, especially if there's a coupon just for subscribers.
To the designer who asked about looking in galleries...no. I've totally stopped looking through DST, sometimes I browse DSA or MSA. What I do now a days is look through the galleries of the stores where I shop. I like a certain style, I scrap a certain style, so I've come to the conclusion that my time is too valuable to browse those huge galleries and weed through all those fantasy, funky, single tiny photo in a corner layouts. Not that they're bad, but for me they hold no interest.
So, I have a few stores I shop, I sign up for newsletters to designers and stores I like. I skip the mega sites, they're no fun anymore. This is one person's opinion, but since you asked I thought I'd speak up.
Here is a thought for the designers who design fantasy kits, you need to have a mixture of ct members with mixture of styles. I can use a fantasy kit in a traditional way and have a blast doing it. I have no interest in fantasy layouts, but I do love the kits. What I have noticed is the fantasy designers CTs are not really showing off the versatility of the kits when they only scrap fantasy style. Perhaps they don't need to worry about the non-fantasy scrappers, but if they did maybe they'd get a wider range of customer.
Just a thought. Enjoy your day.
I'm the designer who originally asked, thank you all for your thoughts.
Designers - how are your sales lately?
Mine are so bad I'm thinking of calling it quits.
For the designer who asked about galleries - I never browse through the gallery unless playing the praise game & I only play that at MSA. I don't play it at DST because the layouts that I "had" to leave a comment on, I could not find anything nice to say about them. So I stopped. Newsletters send ONCE a week, will get a click from me. I will look at layouts within the store/product.
As far as fantasy layouts. I think they are pretty to look at, but for me - scrapping is about preserving memories. So I scrap about my kids, myself, my relationships and so on. And I don't like the funky swirly weird elements that are weird shapes or look off (not paper, not plastic, but some other material never seen before...KWIM? Anyone?) So I don't shop for kits. I haven't bought a kit in a long long long time. Element - bring it. Love them. And that is all I have bought the last week.
And my CTs are all of 2. Both are for designers that I bought well before the CT assignment.

Maybe you need to expand to a dif. customer base or find a new store? have you looked and wondered why? are you marketing yourself?
i don't know why im so surprised but the digi stuff over at 2peas is extremely lame.
"Maybe you need to expand to a dif. customer base or find a new store? have you looked and wondered why? are you marketing yourself?"
I'm in a good store, I really just rely on the store newsletter and DST to post things.
I know I need to be more "out there" as far as exposure, I just don't know what else to do. I don't think banner ads really work from what I've heard other designers say, but what does?
I don't have my own newsletter, I wouldn't even know where to begin.

Designers - how are your sales lately?
Better than last year. Not shabby. Can't complain.
I'm in the minority I suppose, because I actually do look in the galleries a bit, both MSA and DST. And at the stores I like to shop at. I also make great use of my google reader to subscribe to the galleries of scrappers I love so when I don't have time to wade through pages and pages of layouts, I use that.
I actually like leaving comments and taking a closer look at layouts. And not just on layouts in the praise game. I still like the whole edify other scrappers thing, I guess. And I love all styles, so I can always find something nice to say about the pages I encounter.
And many many times I've been drawn by the products used on a page in the gallery to go and take a closer look at it at the store/store gallery and even purchase it.
I too like the newsletters. And also agree that designers of fantasy kits should mix up their ct a little more in terms of style. Especially when showcasing their kits in said newsletters.
I do think there are more non-fantasy cters out there than you would know about reading this blog, lol, but I can see how it would feel an overwhelming trend b/c those who scrap that style are also often the gallery whores and often in threads like GSO (at least at DST). But to each their own. I'm not bothered by much in the community, least of all how another person chooses to scrap.
So flog me now for still surfing galleries and leaving comments and participating in the community in any way, lol. Just wanted to show a bit of another perspective, apart from those who no longer see the value in galleries and such. Some of us still utilize the galleries, both to share our work and get inspired or find something new to buy.
I am right with you. I still browse the galleries, adding layouts to my favorites, and that's how I do most of my shopping (from a layout to the stores). I love all styles as well.
No flogging from me, I used to do that too. I just wanted to know if there was a need for ct's to post in them.
Thanks for keeping it civil today. :)
I never really used the galleries etc to purchase my kits in the first place. If I liked the look of the kit, I would check it out at the store. I do like seeing LOs made with the kit when you click on the larger image preview. What I don't like is when there is something like 15 pages of LOs and then they show you what the papers or elements look like. Most of the time, it's 15 pages of very similar looking LOs. I don't care if they are all fantasy, graphic or whatever, but 15 of near same is not going to convince me to buy the kit, KWIM? Nor do I buy it when the kit has 10 or more papers and you only see one or two papers being used. It makes me wonder how useable the other papers are. Same goes for elements. When all you see are the same elements being used. My biggest complaint is designers throwing in elements that seem to have nothing to do with the kit. I see it more and more. Sure I can delete the element or elements I don't like, but why should I? It makes me question the designer's ability to put something cohesive together, so I don't buy it.
I love to look at the gallery now...when there isn't the CT glut...I get inspired and have met some really neat scrappers!
I am a CTer(the sunshine OP who actually likes doing it) ha ha...
I like the newsletters ALOT!
I rarely buy because of a layout, I look at layouts to learn new techniques or trends I haven't seen.
I buy when I see the kit...
I don't even like to look at the other ladies on cts with me layouts til I have done my layout!
anyone else?
Praise game is crapola...same 50 people leaving lame comments...I was so naive, did one layout I loved loved loved and was rather proud of myself(ya' know those that everything just clicks) did the praise game, quick disillusionment...ha ha
I love to browse the galleries. I've found my favorite papers & elements by seeing them in action in the galleries. I am drawn in particular to pages with journaling, so those are the ones "selling" product to me. Designers, I'd encourage your CTs to include journaling (even if they're just making up stories and changing names). Take a look - quite often pages with journaling have more views.

============================
The reason they have more views is because you need to get closer to satisfy your curiosity about what the journaling is about. You can appreciate an artsy LO just by looking at it, but don't need to zoom in closer - it's the overall effect.
I don't believe the "more views" on LOs with lots of journaling necessarily mean you are interested in the designer's kit. Sometimes that goes by entirely unnoticed. It's like a voyeuristic look at the memories of the person who scrapped it and wrote the journaling.
Yes, I'm saying that kind of curiosity is a good thing because a closer look to read the journaling will ALSO get you a better look at the materials the scrapper used. Something that did not wow me in the gallery, but drew me in with the promise of interesting reading, has quite often resulted in finding papers, elements, and kits that I then go and purchase. Don't underestimate the average scrapper's ability to sell your designs just by producing a scrapbook page that actually tells a story.

This is the Achilles heel of many designers
Designers - are you reading the comments that have been posted in the past 24 hours?!?!
I, too, will buy from galleries & from newsletters. I will google the designers name for the item that I am looking for and I have even been so bold to PM the creator the the layout for who, what, where on the item in question.
As for the designer not knowing how to set up a newsletter - there are many services available out there. Find one that fits your needs. Get the link to sign up on your blog or personal website. Send out newsletters about once a week - anymore & it's annoying. Any less, I forget about you (so many shops, so many favorites...) Good Luck!!

Oh, yes it is. I scrap to tell stories. These are the layouts that I will click on. I love journaling and photos that are bigger than a postage stamp. :) (WTF is up with THOSE layouts?)
Sorry for switching to a new topic, and I know a majority posters here hate Sweet Shop, but I like to shop there...but I am so done with Melissa Bennett. I liked her at one time, but c'mon woman - get your OWN IDEAS. Seems to me that your designs are - how shall I put this nicely? Deriving inspiration from what was previously released a week before by other Sweet Shop Designers. You have an alien kit (done by a few designers the week before), you have a fruit kit (done the week before), you did a Disney kit a week after another one was released. I'm sensing a trend with you Melissa Bennett.
Does anyone have a favorite "lesser known" "AVERAGE" (non fantasy) designer they have discovered?
I have a few but I'm afraid to post for fear you will accuse "named designer" of posting herself. lol
ITA 2:52. At that point I think to myself, "Why didn't they just colab with the people from last week?"

I hate to break it to you, but she was always like this. She used to just about 'derive' something from everything that Gina Miller produced when she first started.

"Post it. I want to know, too. Screw the ol' hags."
Well I actually haven't bought from them except Cinzia but their stuff looks really cute.
Kelley Mickus - Digichick
Nicole Young - Digital Scrapbook Place
Krystal Hartley - ???
Cinzia Loosemore - Everywhere, lol
I don't play nor do I comment in any of the praise games either. I like to peruse the gallery and if a layout strikes me I will click on it and leave a comment.
The fantasy layouts fascinate me, not my style but I appreciate the work and thought that has gone into that page. Same as the 'paper' scrapped page.
I'm on a couple of CT's and love my designers, they fit my style of scrapping and I am comfortable. I love creating my pages, I don't look at my layout as 'here's one CT assignment' I get excited when a new kit is released and look forward to taking my blah photo and making a memory.
For non-fantasy layouts, lately I've been buying alot from Rina Kroes at Scrapbook-Elements. Miki Ferkul is also one of my fav's from the same store. You really can't go wrong with anything from these ladies' stores. Especially since you can use them again and again.

"A case of "Never underestimate how nosey some people are?"
LOL, you may be right.
It's not being nosey if you're putting those layouts out for public view.
I am liking the kits from Hazel Olive Designs over at K-Joi Studios. This designer is VERY new. She used to be on the "LilyAnne Taylor" CT with me.
You don't think this could be another fake Amanda identity do you!?!? She does use the one same pic everywhere!!
I agree. Lovin' the new stuff from Cinzia Loosemore. Go girl!
I'm enjoying the stuff by Sahlin Studio over at scrap matters. It looks like stuff I would really use.
^^^^^^^^
Still me... also liking Tracie Stroud and Megan Turnidge; I was sad they both dropped out of the DSA contest; they were my two faves.
This may be old news but what is going in with OSraps?
You have to be more specific than that... what do you mean what is going on?
I got an Oscraps announcement about server problems a few days ago. They are switching servers? I don't remember the details.
Not only is Melissa Bennett a copycat she is a bad one at that.
There are lots of non fantasy designers
Dianne Rigdon
CreaShen
Tracy Ann Robinson
KSharonK
Deb Fisher
Designs by Lili
Jessica Bolton
Meredith Fenwick
and more
^^^^
Oh of course, I LOVE Tracy Ann, how did I forget to post her.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to check them all out. I love that everyone is keeping it civil. :)
Just a thought here but why does everyone think you have to do a fantasy layout with a so-called fantasy kit? What about so-called non-fantasy kits? Don't think those can be used for a fantasy type layout either? Use your imagination people!!
The only person I can think of who likes to bash Melissa Bennett so much is Amanda Dykan.
Regardless of who likes who, looking at Melissa Bennett's kits my impression was that she has no talent. Her kits are completely blah, typical and boring.
Heather Ann Designs is another non-fantasy designer
I agree. Lovin' the new stuff from Cinzia Loosemore. Go girl!

I have to ask. I am so new to digital world and to this blog. Why does everyone hate Sweet Shoppe? Personally I am not a fan of the kits there, but it seems like everyone doesn't like the people. Enlighten me!
There's absolutely nothing wrong wtih the sweet shoppe. It's a fun place, behind the scenes and on the open boards and there are VERY nice people there. I don't know what the beef is, but to each his own I always say and people should be able to hang out where they choose without being run down.

That might be your opinion, but it's also OK that some have a very different opinion of Sweet Shoppe.
IMO, there's a lot wrong with that place. All the kits look the same-it's like the designers have a big communal pot of crap they use over and over and OVER. There is lots of backstabbing. Very cliqueish. Overpriced. Crummy CS.

I wouldn't say six is a 'bunch', considering that up until the third week or so there were 40 designers.
hmmm Bren is no longer designing at SO??? surprise!
I'm sorry, but HAHAHA what a joke, SO picked the designers who were already signed onto their store to continue on in the SYTYCD contest! What a shocker there, and you know its true because there are a TON of products in some of those designers stores and some that are COLLABS that you just can't whip up overnight! A farce I tell you!

I don't see why a store being clique-ish and having backstabbing behind the scenes has anything to do with whether you like to shop there and enjoy working with the products.
Most people know the truth about Walmart and unions or Starbucks and fair trade... but they still shop there anyway.

They don't all look the same. They are the same style but very different when compared one on one.

They all look the same to me. They don't to you. Your view is just as much an opinion as mine.
My opinion of behavior at SSD and from their designers and CTs is based on what I've seen. If you've seen something different, good for you. You think it's just peach over there-that's your opinion. I think the place is steeped in bullshit-that's my opinion.
I don't give a rat's ass if you're a designer or CT or anything else over there. You're entitled to have your opinion of SSD, but I'm also entitled to have mine.
For SO & a lot of the designers in the "contest" being there - no surprise, really. It doesn't bother me really nor do I care. I got some free kits out of their SYTYCD contest & those designers got a new store. No big deal IMHO.
I'm kind of shocked that Molly DeCrow moved from WAS to SO.
Ditto on the Faith True move. I don't like the Pickle, but they seem to be a much hotter store right now than SO-more big name designers at the Pickle for sure.
I've totally given up on keeping up with Bren Boone-I've always loved her designs, but I just can't be bothered to try and chase her down all the time.
I see the SSD haters are back. Seems every "more space" thread we get, somebody has to stick their two cents in about shitty SSD is. Get a life. Pick a new store to smack on, this shit is old. If you don't like it, don't shop there. Easy Peasy
I heard Bren was in contact with one of the SO owners. She had a family emergency. Sometimes people just have a bad year and things happen. Just be thankful it's not your life.

pretty much everything at KJoi studios is crap!!!
On Hazel Olive...A simple google search would give you her blog (no clue where she sells) but there is a freebie on there. Her designs are not my style as her papers seem a bit flat.

June 15, 2009 11:33 AM
I agree.
On that note - what makes you (anyone) call a designer "good" or someone you keep buying from? What do you look for in a kit/papers/embellishments?
To answer my own question....
I'll keep buying from a designer if their papers are nicely textured & colored. I love bold patterns. I love a kit that has a variety of papers - not recolored solids or patterns. Give me fresh and new with each kit. I love elements that are realistic, but I'm not one to put twigs and berries and metal on my pages (minus the brad/screw here and there). For element packs - give me something new, different and well crafted. I do like kits with a lot of "stuff" in them, but if it is recolored stuff - no thanks.
I mostly buy from Zoe Pearn, Kaye Winecki, Anne Dejong, Flergs, Dani Mogstad, Paislee Press and Taylor Made Designs. Although the last 2 are a bit too minimalistic for me, I end up mixing their items with other items in my stash. I've recently bought from Valorie Brown & like her stuff, just haven't the time to use it all yet.
Hazel Olive's designs don't look all that bad to me, infact I quite like them. However I do think her previews (and even some of the CT layout previews) look bland and she needs to add shadows to the elements to make it look more appealing.
I think Hazels kits look like they have alot of that Granny Art stuff in them.
^^^^^^^^
LOL, do you mean Barb Speck's CU items?

bleh on the grannyart stuff-same for the HazelOlive stuff.

SO True!
The Hazel Olive stuff looks cute to me, she can obviously can put an attractive kit together. Wouldn't know about the quality though.
On that note - what makes you (anyone) call a designer "good" or someone you keep buying from? What do you look for in a kit/papers/embellishments?
June 15, 2009 11:37 AM
Appealing color scheme, solid bkds included that are NOT the same texture recolored 3, 4, or 5 times,
CU items used in a creative way (not just as is), and at least one unique item per kit that you created or extracted and that I don't find in five other designers kits at the moment (or in one of your kits from last week.)
In fact, I don't expect a new kit each week, I think stores who push their designers to fill the new release section of a store every Saturday to be unnecessary and a big reason for the reccyled junk we customers see and recognize in the stores.
I'd much prefer a more orignial kit from a designer that only puts out new releases 2x a month vs 4.
OMG Hazel Olive dared to use a piece or two of Granny Art & made it actually look good!?! The nerve!!!
Since we are all so above that with our amazingly awesome kits, I say we just knock the bitch off. Then we won't have anything to be jealous of eh?
all the designers at SSD pool their work . . .

Sorry that pisses you off so much.
UGH! Grannyart is nothing but rendered poser crap. Badly rendered poser crap. I downloaded something just to see what the quality was like and let's just say it didn't stay on my drive for more than about 3 seconds.
Hate to be a pot stirrer, but doesn't Hazel's Home Sweet Home kit remind you a little of Lilly Ann aka Amanda's stuff? She did used to be on her CT.
LOL, do you mean Barb Speck's CU items?

Are we really going to start with the whole CU rant again. Even Peta Boardman used CU...how about Catherine Designs? Are you judging them to?
I am so sick of this damn CU isn't designing blah blah blah! I would love to see you post your real names up here with your comments as I'd be willing to bet your work sucks. It's also probably the real reason you are mad.
I am not against using granny art in a kit as long as someone can make it look good, and clean up the horrible quality it downloads in. More work for her. Who cares?
Oh don't be butt hurt that you acted so ABOVE Granny Art in the designer forum and got majorly corrected on your ignorance(by multiple designers including Barb Speck and Hazel olive). By the way I followed the link to your blog...your stuff is complete garbage. Why are you even in this industry?
Anyways..don't take it out on Barb or Hazel Olive. They both gave intelligent opinions on the matter. Your the one who brought it up.
It would be easier to purchase the models and render them yourself than try and clean the granny stuff up. Most stuff at Daz3d is very inexpensive and the DS application is free. I don't know what she does to set up the rendering settings but her stuff just looks bad. Obviously, she enjoys playing with 3d and that's great for her but for designers looking to earn money from their designs, that's not a great source to get CU material.

Secondly, I didn't bring up JW quality issues (poster #2). I stated that the designs from both of them are VERY VERY alike.

About the SYTYCD Contest=New SO Designers. The only part about it that I find crap is that 2 of the new designers, just so happen to be the 2 that dropped out last round. Seems strange that they would both drop yet still get picked up.
Could it be they were picked up first? And thats why they dropped? Something to ponder

I don't have a beef and I never said winning was required to be a designer, full time or guest, at SO. Not sure why you selected my post to reply to.
Quick question: If you find that one of the papers in a kit, whatever kit, whatever designer, has some obvious problems do you say something to the designer? I really like this designer, she's incredibly nice, I really enjoy her designs, and I don't want to insult her. I think the paper should be fixed or removed, but I am reluctant to tell her so. Think about it before answering. It's easy to pop off and say TELL HER, but, as a designer, do you really want to hear it? Or will you shoot the messenger, however unintentionally?
heck, we're only human. Sometimes it takes so long to design a kit, my eyes get sick of looking at it and my brain turns to mush.
She probably just didn't catch the problem. I know if it was me, I'd want to know because there's nothing worse than selling a lot of an item just to find out 2 months later, there's errors with it.
every single designer I know, and most that respond to the threads about this in any of the forums will say yes, please speak up in a PM or email!
As long as you present it in a helpful and respectful manner I doubt the designer would be upset. If they are upset they shouldn't be designing! More than likely they didn't realize the problem and won't unless someone tells them.

I'm a designer and yes, I'm just human, so mistakes can happen. I did a mistake once and no one told me and I sold a bunch of the item. After 3 weeks, someone very nice send me an email about it. I couldn't believe it took 3 weeks for someone to finally let me know. I think everyones is just too afraid to piss the designer off so they say nothing. But, trust me, as a designer, I was very grateful with the 1 person who was nice enough to tell me. I don't want my customer to be afraid of me!
ABSOLUTELY!!! Yes I would want to know. The sooner the better. Preferably not in a thread at DST though. lol
So who, exactly, do you think is posting here, that you are thinking you're talking to? (and saying their "stuff is complete garbage"). The World wants to know. I wish I had super-powers to know who I was talking to! LMAO!
wv = inotant ...as in... "I know-t-aint possible, but I know everything, including who is posting here!"
No, definitely _NOT_ DST! LOL This is as public as it gets - anonymous poster, anonymous designer, anonymous product. I just needed to hear it from a designer, thanks! :)
^^^^^^
You're Welcome. I hope I DON'T hear from you soon. LOL

-------------------------
As the others designers have said, tell her. I would want to know. I'm always surprised at the CTs that don't tell their designers that there is a problem. I know that on the CTs I'm on, if I see a problem, I tell my designer. I have around 8 CTMs and only one of them will tell me if I have made a mistake on something. Sometimes you just get so sick of the kit you are working on, you don't pick up on mistakes.
Hate to be a pot stirrer, but doesn't Hazel's Home Sweet Home kit remind you a little of Lilly Ann aka Amanda's stuff? She did used to be on her CT.
-----------------------------------
Nope
As a designer myself, I would definitely want to know about any mistakes that I had made. Sometimes I'm lucky cos the CT picked them up and they tell me straight away.. I think if a customer were to email me about this, I would definitely be grateful for that... :)
I'd like to comment on the whole topic of DIGITAL ART verses SCRAPBOOKING because this is something that I struggle with. There really IS a difference, but the difference has nothing to do with style (ie paper-look verses fantasy or extractions). I believe the difference is this:
Scrapbooking = memory preservation
Digital art = not necessarily memory preservation (LOL)although I suppose a digital art piece could reflect a real memory in some cases but often it does not.
The whole idea of scrapbooking has to do with memorabilia. In the old days (ie my grandmother's time), people created scrapbooks by saving news clippings, photos, journaling, napkins, stamps, magazine pictures etc. to record their lives and memories. My grandmother started her scrapbooks when her sons were in the war as a way to save their letters. I think it helped her cope with her fears as a war mother.
If you are not documenting a memory, then it's not really scrapbooking, it's something else and I think Digital Art is a great description. I'm not saying in ANY way that Digital Art is bad or lesser or anything else. I'm just saying that I think everyone would be happier if the two areas were acknowledged and separated more in contests and things like that. That way, people that are committed to memory preservation do not feel like they are 'competing' with digital artists.
This is a personal struggle for me because I am CAPABLE of creating digital art layouts and that would bring me a lot of personal satisfaction. These types of layouts seem to be the ones that get a ton of comments and are always in the GSO. But, then it feels like I'm off-course because my ultimate goal (the only way I can justify the time I put into this) is for memory preservation.
I've occasionally created digital art pieces just for the fun of it, but the end result has no real meaning to me in terms of memory preservation.
I just think there is tension mounting among those who are bound by the need to preserve real memories because they are much more limited than those who are creating digital art: For example, a digital artist can get satisfaction scrapping a stock photo of a beautiful baby and they can create a scene much more beautiful than real life. But a scrapbooker (meaning a person committed to memory preservation) has to scrap that photo (maybe not such a beautiful photo, maybe not even a beautiful child by the world's standards), and they are constrained by reality. It's just not a fair competition and I think therein lies the concern. If someone is not bound by the reality of a REAL memory, then they are much more free in their artistic creations. Let's face it - sometimes reality isn't so pretty! LOL!
These are just my thoughts. I do not say them to offend anyone or belittle either area. I'm happy that I can see both types of work and I find both inspiring for different reasons. We are on the forefront of the digital arts and if we need to create two different categories, then we should do it!!!
We are the movers and shakers of this emerging movement and we should build it to meet everyone's needs. The person who suggested a change in the GSO was on to something. Perhaps there SHOULD be two standout threads:
1. Scrapbooking (memory Preservation) Standouts
2. Digital Art Standouts
Do you all think this would make everyone happier?
I know I need to be more "out there" as far as exposure, I just don't know what else to do. I don't think banner ads really work from what I've heard other designers say, but what does?
--------------------------
Here's an idea - get a huge, talented CT of about 20 gals. Give them the kit ahead of time and have them all create a layout and post all of them on THE DAY that the kit is released. Then have them nominate each other in the DST GSO and gush over each other's layouts. You will create the perception that you are the most popular designer in the world!
And guess what - it's totally free!!!

COULDN'T AGREE MORE!
wow to the description of digital art versus scrapbooking...I so agree!
nice to look at, but just because you use scrapbook elements and a program that folks that scrapbook use and post in a scrap booking forum, doesn't make it a scrapbook page...
just cause a mouse lives in a cookie jar doesn't make it a cookie!
and insert handclap smilie here for the mockery/sarcasm in regards to 20 CTs posting and gushing about each others layouts and useing the praise/standout threads
yes, scrapbooking is evolving, but the market for scrapbooking pages isn't going away.
I have dabbled a bit in digi art and it is fun and I'm no pro...no journalling, titles or memory, but beautiful and fun to make; doesn't make it wrong, but it isn't a scrapbook page of a memory. My kids have never flown to my recollection?
whew

LOL, I kwym. It's not worth getting smacked on this blog to me though.
BTW, can anyone tell me how to use html here? Every time I try, it says "Your HTML cannot be accepted: Tag is not closed:"
"Do you all think this would make everyone happier?"
NO! I think people will always find something to be pi$$ed off about.
For me, the digital art/preserving memories debate isn't important. Why should it matter to me what other people with their pictures? If it's about preserving your memories, then do so. Do it in the style that works for you without worrying about how those more gritty moments compare with someone else's beautiful flying baby, on the beach, wearing a chef's hat, and holding an umbrella, if you KWIM.
Still, great post. I enjoyed reading it!
Oops, the above was directed to 9:36.
^^^^^
Totally agree with you but I think the reason for the debate is GSO and contests.
People get offended if they don't win and a "fantasy" scrapper does. Same with GSO threads.
People want to separate the 2.
Great post 9:36, I like the way you explained the differences. I think it would be great to have that distinction event in the galleries. That way when looking for inspiration you could get exactly what you are looking for.
I think a lot of the digital artist creating the digital art are european and they really seem to support each other. They make an effort to comment on each others LO and return comments alot. I think that support is why we see so many of them in the GSO.

---------------------
So true! So not only are they doing digital art instead of preserving memories, they also have a shared language and a culture of supporting each other.
Great for them - but perhaps leaving those that are not part of that particular group feeling a bit out of the loop.
I think the GSO thread should remain as is. If people don't post traditional layouts in it now, what makes you think they will in a new GSO that's JUST for traditional layouts? What's stopping people from posting the kind of layouts that they want to see? I posted a couple for the first time in yesterday's thread, just to get into the spirit of it, and it wasn't hard at all. The reason that the thread is so cluttered up with CT pimping and fantasy layouts is because no one who prefers traditional layouts is taking the time to post. If you don't post, don't complain. That's a generic you, btw--obviously I don't know who complains but never posts. I suspect it's a lot of people, though, since there is a lot of complaining and not a lot of posting.
ITA about separating things into scrapbooking vs. digital art. Neither is "better" than the other-I like both. I'd love for there to be a gallery and/or community that acknowledges the difference, and celebrates them both!
BTW, can anyone tell me how to use html here? Every time I try, it says "Your HTML cannot be accepted: Tag is not closed:"

Most likely you are not putting a closing tag on every tag you use - possibly even including paragraphs (< p > minus spaces - closing would be < / p > minus spaces). If you use < i > for italic, you need to make sure to end with < / i > (without spaces). Same with bold, ( < b > < / b > ) etc. The only one that doesn't need a closing tag is < br > (line break) (which, by the way, you must use to separate your paragraphs (if you don't use < p > if you use any HTML at all in your post. Otherwise everything you type will end up in one long paragraph.
Hahaha! Can't wait to see what this actually looks like when posted! LOL!

----------------
WELL SAID! I'm 9:36 and I guess that's sort of what I was trying to say. Let's celebrate and acknowledge the value of both, but let's separate them to give each it's own spotlight. I'd love to see a future where we have separations of Scrapbook layouts, Digital Art pages, and Hybrid pieces.
Specifically in response to 12:25: It's not that I "prefer" scrapbook pages over digital art. That's part of the point - if you are comparing the two, digital art is probably going to win because it's created specifically to be artistic eye-candy as opposed to preserving a memory.
One of the driving forces behind the idea of distinguishing between the two, is to level the playing field a bit for the scrapbooker who is preserving memories. For example, in contests, if you are scrapping your own (not so perfect) kids, it's really hard to compete against a layout using an Anne Geddes photo using a baby model. This is probably why traditional magazines don't feature many fantasy pages and why they require that photos be your own.
And although scrapping isn't supposed to be a competitive activity, we all tend to compare ourselves and our work to everyone else. By separating digital art from scrapbooking, we would be comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges! Specifically when it comes to contests and scrappers choice awards etc, we would be giving the scrapbooker who is preserving memories a better chance of getting recognition by separating out the pieces done solely for artistic beauty.
Huh. While I agree to some extent with the digital art versus scrapbooking conversation, the one thing I think maybe that seems to be lost is that sometimes a layout can be both. I have a tendency to do primarily what I guess you would call 'scrapbooking' but occasionally do a layout that falls more under the header of 'digital art'. Just because the layout I made of my kid has them in a magical forest with wings and is more artistic in nature doesn't mean I wasn't scrapping a specific memory. In some cases maybe it's the way the picture I took makes me feel, or maybe it's because my kid was pretending to be a fairy. Point being, just because something may be more 'artistic' doesn't mean that it doesn't preserve one of my memories.
bold italics testing THANKS
What does"GSO" mean??
Thanks
Gallery Standouts - Technically, I guess it should be GO. I don't know how it got labeled GSO here. LOL
possibly because Stand Outs should really be two words, lol!
LMBO - That could be it.
the dst gso is crap. I know some designers actually ask that their ct nominate each other for it. at least the gso blog is unrelated to ct's, I go look there when I want to see some good pages.
Perhaps there SHOULD be two standout threads:
1. Scrapbooking (memory Preservation) Standouts
2. Digital Art Standouts
